Chapter 8: Chapter 8: “Aizen’s Birthday Blues”

Aizen's birthday started like any other day: with Stephanie barging into his room at dawn, her arms full of… something.

"Wake up, sleepyhead! It's your special day!" she declared, tossing a bundle of fabric onto his face.

Aizen groaned, peeling the fabric off. It was a cloak—deep blue with silver embroidery, clearly expensive and definitely not something a servant should own.

"My lady, what is this?" he asked, sitting up.

"Your birthday present, obviously!" Stephanie beamed, hands on her hips. "I had it commissioned last month. Do you like it?"

Aizen ran his fingers over the embroidery, which depicted swirling constellations. "It's… too much. I can't accept this."

Stephanie's smile faltered. "Why not? It's yours. I made sure it's enchanted, too—it'll keep you warm in winter and cool in summer. And it's waterproof! And fireproof! And—"

"Stephanie," Aizen interrupted gently. "It's beautiful. But I'm a servant. Wearing something like this would be… inappropriate."

Her expression darkened. "Who cares what's appropriate? You're my servant. If I say you can wear it, you can wear it."

Aizen sighed, recognizing the futility of arguing. "Thank you, my lady. It's… very thoughtful."

Stephanie's smile returned, brighter than ever. "Good! Now put it on. We're going to the gardens."

The Garden Picnic

The Redwyne gardens were in full bloom, their vibrant colors a stark contrast to the crisp autumn air. Stephanie had commandeered a secluded gazebo, where a lavish picnic spread awaited.

"I told the cooks to make all your favorites," she said, gesturing to the array of dishes. "Roast chicken, honey-glazed carrots, apple tarts… and this."

She unveiled a small cake, its frosting a perfect replica of the constellations on Aizen's new cloak.

"Did you… bake this?" Aizen asked, incredulous.

Stephanie flushed. "Of course not! I supervised. That's basically the same thing."

Aizen chuckled. "It's amazing. Thank you."

As they ate, Stephanie chattered about her plans for the day—a horseback ride, a visit to the town market, and a "surprise" she refused to elaborate on. Aizen listened, content to let her excitement fill the silence.

The Surprise

The surprise, as it turned out, was a private magic lesson.

"I've been practicing," Stephanie said, leading Aizen to a clearing in the woods. "I wanted to show you something special."

She raised her wand, her expression focused. The air around her shimmered as she conjured a swarm of glowing butterflies, their wings trailing stardust.

"It's beautiful," Aizen said, genuinely impressed.

Stephanie grinned. "That's not all."

With a flick of her wrist, the butterflies transformed into a cascade of falling stars, each one bursting into tiny fireworks. The display was breathtaking—and, Aizen realized, far beyond her usual skill level.

"How did you…?"

"I've been studying," she said, her tone casual. "I wanted to make your birthday perfect."

Aizen felt a pang of guilt. "Stephanie, you didn't have to—"

"I wanted to," she interrupted, her voice firm. "You're important to me, Aizen. More important than anyone else."

Her words hung in the air, heavy with unspoken meaning.

The Incident

The day took a turn when they returned to the estate. A group of visiting nobles had arrived, their children in tow. Among them was a boy around Aizen's age, his confident demeanor and polished manners immediately drawing Stephanie's ire.

"Who's that?" she demanded, glaring at the boy from across the courtyard.

"His name is Cedric," Aizen said, recognizing him from the game's lore. "His family's visiting for the week."

Stephanie's eyes narrowed. "He's looking at you."

"He's probably just curious."

"Curious about what?"

Before Aizen could respond, Cedric approached, his smile polite. "Hello. You must be Lady Stephanie. I'm Cedric."

Stephanie crossed her arms. "What do you want?"

Cedric blinked, taken aback. "I just wanted to introduce myself. And…" He turned to Aizen. "You're Aizen, right? I've heard a lot about you."

Aizen frowned. "From who?"

"The servants. They say you're Lady Stephanie's favorite."

Stephanie stepped between them, her wand glowing faintly. "He's mine. Got it?"

Cedric raised his hands in surrender. "Of course. I didn't mean to intrude."

As he walked away, Stephanie turned to Aizen, her expression stormy. "Why was he talking to you?"

"He was just being polite."

"He was flirting."

Aizen stared at her. "Stephanie, he's nine."

"So?"

The Aftermath

That night, as Aizen lay in bed, Vermis broke the silence.

"Master, her possessiveness is escalating. I recommend establishing boundaries before it becomes unmanageable."

Aizen sighed. "I know. But how do you set boundaries with someone who thinks the world revolves around them?"

"Carefully. And with a fire extinguisher."
