Chapter 85: It's Not the Time
"Arghhh!!!"
Boom!
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Dante fired several shots at a man in a gray suit who had stepped out in front of armored men.
There wasn't a single profound thought running through Dante's mind; all he could think about was killing and continuing to kill as many enemies as stood in his way.
Facing armed men and unwilling to use his remaining bullets, he reached out and grabbed the throat of one of the armored soldiers, hurling him against the wall. Before the man could recover, a blade swiftly sliced through his neck.
By the time the men who were cut realized what had happened, it was already too late. Blood loss from such deep wounds silenced them in seconds.
Dante, drenched in enemy blood, watched the body fall to the ground. He stood up, only to spot a man who had appeared in the hallway and fired numerous shots at him.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
To dodge the bullets, Dante rolled to the floor. Spotting a rifle nearby, he grabbed it and returned fire, aiming at the man in the distance.
After a few minutes, the gunfire stopped. Dante realized he was out of ammunition, threw the weapon aside, and shouted, "How about a knife fight? It'd be more interesting. Wanna give it a try?"
A thin man wearing glasses smiled faintly. He wasn't foolish but also didn't have bullets left, so he said, "I should trust you, but I can't."
Recognizing the voice as belonging to Caine, Dante replied, "You can trust me. I'm a man of my word."
"Then come. Let's settle this without weapons."
Dante didn't remove the jacket of his suit. As soon as he stepped into the hallway, he noticed Caine holding a sword in his hand.
"Where are the members of the Glass family?" Caine asked, stepping closer to Dante.
"They've escaped, but my question is whether I should kill you or not." Dante unsheathed his sword, seriously considering the matter.
He knew Caine was a highly skilled assassin whose only flaw might be his overconfidence in his abilities. But Dante understood that this wasn't much of a disadvantage, so he needed to be cautious.
Caine stayed silent when he heard Dante pondering whether to kill him or not.
It was a good joke, but he couldn't laugh, as Dante's arrogance overshadowed the humor.
"I'm just doing my job. You should know that no one can go against the Order..." Caine said, raising his sword.
Dante did the same and replied, "Now that you're here, there's a way—a way for you to leave all of this behind without dying."
"Like what?"
"Mexico. I could send you to that country where the High Order's influence is minimal. The Mexican cartels excluded by that organization control the entire country, and thanks to my connections with them, I can provide you with a safe escape."
"That's no life..." Caine instantly refused.
"And being a dog for the High Order is? Well, it doesn't matter..."
Saying this, Dante prepared to attack and concluded, "But since you've rejected my goodwill, as my duty demands, I'll take care of eliminating those who oppose me."
"I'm just doing my job..."
As Caine finished his sentence, he waited for Dante to move to gauge the best way to counterattack.
When Dante's sword moved forcefully, Caine responded in kind, and in an instant, their blades clashed violently.
Clang!
The sound of metal against metal rang out. Dante wasn't sure if he truly wanted to kill this man, who seemed valuable, so he decided to wait.
"Ahhhh!"
Crack!
Dante's continuous strikes made Caine's sword tremble in his hands. After two more heavy blows, Caine's sword shattered in half.
As this happened, Dante saw Caine draw his pistol. Without a second thought, he charged straight at him and slashed at the gun's barrel.
Bang!
Clang!
Caine tried to retreat, but in that moment, Dante's blade was at his throat. Surprised by this, Caine dropped his weapon.
"You're very skilled, perhaps even better than I was in my youth." Caine smiled faintly, thinking Dante would kill him.
"If you had killed someone like Susie or Jack, I might have killed you. At best, I'd investigate thoroughly and eliminate the people most precious to you. Why is your expression changing? I have some influence within the High Order because my organization sells weapons to them—the same weapons their competitors are now using to try to kill me."
The Sons of Anarchy trafficked weapons, and their main client was the High Order. Of course, they wielded influence both within and beyond it, providing avenues for investigation.
Since starting negotiations with the High Order, Dante knew many of his weapon suppliers felt threatened. Now, when they saw an opportunity to eliminate him, they used every ounce of power under their influence.
That's why they sent their best—a bloodthirsty assassin who craved escape from the Order.
But if they failed, all those attackers would be exposed.
Caine raised his eyebrows high and asked, "Who are you?"
"I've been underestimated from the start. The High Order will learn they've crossed an enemy who demands answers." Dante said, sheathing his sword.
Understanding this, Caine asked, "You won't take my life?"
"I need you alive. Whoever sent you will face judgment, so you'll have to testify on my behalf to find a path where you can survive," Dante said, waving his hand dismissively.
