Chapter 349: Back to School
Shen Mochen's gaze held a hint of surprise. He glanced at the other person and suddenly felt a bit lost, unsure of what to say.
"Really impressive, your sister is remarkable too, both of you are heroes!" Tony the barber looked quite happy as he waved his large hand, "Today, your haircut is on the house!"
"No, no, no, I should still pay," Shen Mochen finally snapped out of it, quickly shaking his head while he made up a lie, "We have rules about this."
Tony clucked his tongue, thinking to himself that this is indeed a young hero, truly noble and righteous, disdainful of taking such minor advantages!
In that case, he would have to bring out his best skills!
Tony worked with his scissors gracefully and meticulously; this young hero was incredibly handsome, as if a Heavenly God had descended, each snip as deliberate as a careful carving. The haircut had to be one that wouldn't let him down!
After about half an hour, Tony finally finished the hairstyle and then personally washed Shen Mochen's hair, taking the chance to chat with him in the process.
Tony asked if First Middle School was about to have its holiday, wondering if Shen Mochen was visiting the school to see his teachers. Shen Mochen nodded, yes, tomorrow we break for the holiday, so today I wanted to see my classmates and teachers. Tony then said you're really thoughtful, not like some people who forget their teachers as soon as they leave school! Shen Mochen blurted out that would never happen, the gratitude for a teacher's education is surely unforgettable for a lifetime! Tony went on to say what a good kid you are, I heard your family situation isn't that great, there are so many privileged students at First Middle School, nobody bullies you, right? Shen Mochen defended his school saying, no, no, my classmates are all especially friendly, especially our class president, who has taken good care of me before!
Shen Mochen knew that the school was using him for promotional purposes, an attempt to mask the privileged air of First Middle School. Nothing could be better than a child from the slums to play the role of smokescreen, and more so, a child who had awoken a Superpower under First Middle School's "guidance." A Scholar title could cleanse the earthly odor off Shen Mochen, without harming the school's upscale image.
But this was a win-win for both Shen Mochen and First Middle School. The school could wash away its public image slightly, and Shen Mochen could gain a clean slate and a degree of fame.
Happy with the arrangement, Shen Mochen was willing to cooperate and consciously maintain the school's image. Additionally, given the vast influence of First Middle School, being closely tied with it meant the school could help cover up his less than savory misdemeanors of petty thefts and brawls from his younger days.
Ah, those were indeed unsavory memories, truly the folly of youth.
Ah, just the folly of youth.
After washing his hair, Tony took to blow-drying Shen Mochen's hair seriously and even applied the best hair gel from his shop.
Shen Mochen, like all gentle people, expressed his gratitude, then left the barber shop maintaining a refined and elegant demeanor.
The early summer breeze was unbearably hot, heading into the afternoon, the scorching sun making the leaves wilt.
Shen Mochen had only been out for a little while when sweat began soaking his back. He really didn't want to ride his bike, so he hailed a taxi.
The driver didn't seem to have heard of Shen Mochen's "fame," but he showed respect for the First Middle School uniform, even asking Shen Mochen if his school had recently produced a Scholar.
Upon arriving at the school entrance, Shen Mochen looked at the distant teaching building he hadn't seen for a long time and walked toward the security booth.
Most students of First Middle School were rich or noble, so the security of First Middle School was extremely strict. Approaching the security booth, before Shen Mochen even needed to pull out his student ID, the security guards greeted him with a mix of shock and delight.
They naturally all recognized Shen Mochen. After exchanging pleasantries, the security uncles inquired about life as a Scholar and let Shen Mochen in with a smile, telling him to come back often.
Shen Mochen put on his face mask and strolled through the campus. Today was the last day of the term, without many classes, and there were small groups of students frolicking in the schoolyard, but not too many.
The summer was sweltering, and the cicadas were deafening in the dense shade.
Shen Mochen carried gifts for his teachers in his backpack as he made his way to the administration building. He was destined to be a celebrity, a political star, a social elite, so he paid attention to every detail.
Although he came from humble beginnings as a small-time hoodlum, he knew he was no longer Fan Jin, but a Scholar who had passed the middle exam. Therefore, adhering to the unspoken rules of civilized people was essential.
At first, no one paid attention to Shen Mochen, partly because of the stifling heat, which discouraged people from looking around, and partly because Shen Mochen wore a mask, making him hard to recognize at first glance.
However, a mask couldn't completely conceal his identity, and before long, someone recognized him, and soon Shen Mochen was surrounded by people.
After being entangled by the students of First Middle School for a while, Shen Mochen finally made his way to the administration building.
He humbly visited all his former teachers, present and absent, leaving the small gifts on their desks when they were not in.
As Shen Mochen passed by each office, teachers who both knew and didn't know him struck up conversations. In a way, Shen Mochen was the most mysterious student at First Middle School.
Not just because he had awakened a Superpower, but because Shen Mochen had only shown his true face two days before his awakening.
Thus, rumors still circulated in the school that the reason Shen Mochen had hidden his face before was because of plastic surgery that hadn't yet healed.
Shen Mochen politely replied to every teacher who spoke with him, showing no signs of impatience. After a while, his former homeroom teacher, Ms. Xun, returned.
Seizing the opportunity, Shen Mochen said his goodbyes to the other teachers and walked into Ms. Xun's office, bowing with a smile, "Hello, Ms. Xun."
Ms. Xun, looking at the young man as polished and refined as jade, also found herself momentarily entranced. She had never seen such a handsome boy, and it was a shame that he had only revealed his face for a short while before leaving the school.
She wondered about the countless young girls' crushes and thought if only there had been boys like him during her high school days... She gradually adjusted her mindset and smiled kindly, "You're back. On my way here, I heard about it, how you came back and visited the teachers right away. It's truly touching."
"Without the hard work and guidance of all the teachers, there would be no me today," Shen Mochen replied, still with humility on his face. He took out the last gift box, "Ms. Xun, this is for you."
"You coming here is enough, why bring a gift?" Ms. Xun said, her eyes smiling.
"It's just a modest gift, mainly to express my gratitude for your educational grace."
Hearing that Shen Mochen's gift was nothing pricey, Ms. Xun accepted it with grace, "The gift isn't important, it's your thought that is priceless!"
After a brief exchange of pleasantries, Ms. Xun took Shen Mochen's hand, inquiring after his life at Buque. Then something came to her mind, and she laughed, "You, my boy, are quite good at playing it down. You were always top of the grade at Fengye Middle School, but at First Middle School you played the fool!"
"Not at all, the students at First Middle School are very strong, and the teachers are generally a bit better than at Fengye. It's normal to struggle to keep up when I first got here," Shen Mochen modestly replied.
Ms. Xun smiled and shook her head, knowing this was just Shen Mochen's excuse, but she didn't take it seriously. Judging from his previous behavior, Shen Mochen simply did not want to make waves or draw attention.
"By the way, come with me to the class later. Tomorrow is the last day of school, and today will be your last chance to see your classmates this term," Ms. Xun's smile faded slightly as she spoke softly, "Catherine will be going back to Roman next term."
She was aware of the past romance between Shen Mochen and Catherine, but she was unaware of how Shen Mochen felt at this moment.
