A Dunphy's Basketball System ( Modern Family )

Chapter 17: Chapter 17: The Beach Getaway

The morning after the party, Adrian's announcement about the beach getaway was met with the kind of reaction he had come to expect from his family, chaos and strong opinions.

"You're going to the beach? For the weekend? With who?" Claire's voice carried through the house as she grilled Adrian in the kitchen.

"Relax, Mom," Adrian said, leaning against the counter. "It's just Kendall, Kylie, Dylan, and Cole. We're just going to hang out and unwind."

"Unwind?" Claire's tone sharpened. "You just went to a party. Isn't that enough unwinding?"

Phil popped his head into the kitchen, grinning. "Come on, Claire. A beach trip sounds like a classic teen adventure. Live a little!"

"Phil, this isn't about living a little. It's about responsibility," Claire snapped, then turned back to Adrian. "Are there chaperones?"

Adrian gave her a look. "We're in high school, not elementary school. We don't need chaperones."

"See? He's responsible!" Phil said, giving Adrian a thumbs-up.

Haley, scrolling through her phone at the table, snorted. "Responsible? Adrian? Have you met him? I'm just waiting for the call when he accidentally sets something on fire."

"Thanks for the vote of confidence," Adrian replied dryly.

Luke, sitting next to Haley, piped up. "Can I come? I'm great at the beach."

"No." Adrian, Haley, and Claire said in unison.

Alex, looking up from her book, added her two cents. "It's not like the beach house will survive anyway. Kendall and Kylie are going. That guarantees drama."

Adrian groaned. "Thanks for the support, everyone."

In the living room, Jay's reaction was predictably blunt. "Beach house, huh? Hope you know how to take care of yourself out there. Don't do anything stupid. And don't let those twins boss you around."

Gloria beamed. "Ay, my Adrian, going on a trip with friends. Make sure to bring sunscreen and wear a hat! The sun can be very strong near the water."

Manny, seated next to her, adjusted his glasses. "I could write you a packing list if you need help staying organized."

Adrian shook his head. "I think I've got it, Manny, but thanks."

Cam and Mitch arrived just in time to catch the tail end of the conversation.

"A beach trip? How fun!" Cam said, clasping his hands together. "Don't forget to take lots of pictures. You'll want to remember this forever."

Mitch raised an eyebrow. "Just make sure it's the kind of memory you'll want to share, not one you'll regret."

"Noted," Adrian said with a chuckle.

Arrival at the Beach House

The beach house was breathtaking. Nestled along a pristine stretch of coastline, it featured floor-to-ceiling windows, a sparkling pool, and an expansive patio overlooking the ocean. As soon as the group arrived, Kendall and Kylie immediately took charge, splitting tasks and assigning rooms.

"Adrian, you're in this room," Kendall said, pointing toward a spacious suite with a view of the water.

"Wow, you're giving me the best room?" Adrian teased.

Kylie rolled her eyes. "Don't let it go to your head. We're just being nice."

Meanwhile, Dylan and Cole dragged their bags inside, loudly debating which room had the best acoustics for recording their inevitable shenanigans.

The next morning, Kendall announced her plan for a hike along the nearby cliffs. "We're here to enjoy nature, not just lounge around," she declared, handing out water bottles.

Adrian groaned. "Can't we just skip to the lounging part?"

"Nope," Kendall replied firmly.

Dylan and Cole, unprepared but enthusiastic, tagged along, turning the hike into a chaotic adventure.

Halfway up the trail, Dylan spotted what he called a "shortcut" and veered off the path. "Trust me, this is going to be epic!" he said, confidently leading the group into dense foliage.

Ten minutes later, they were hopelessly lost. Kendall fumed, glaring at Dylan. "This is why we stick to the trail!"

Adrian stepped in to mediate. "Okay, everyone, calm down. Let's use my phone's GPS to get back on track."

Eventually, they stumbled upon a secluded beach with crystal-clear water, making the detour worth it. "See? Told you it would be epic," Dylan said smugly.

Later that afternoon, the group gathered by the pool. Kylie stretched out on a lounge chair with sunglasses perched on her nose, while Kendall scrolled through her phone.

"This is more like it," Adrian said, sinking into a pool float.

The peace didn't last long. Dylan challenged Adrian to a cannonball contest, and soon, water splashed everywhere, soaking Kendall's phone.

"Dylan!" she shrieked, jumping up and waving her phone in the air. "Do you have any idea how expensive this is?"

Dylan grinned sheepishly. "Uh, priceless memories?"

The ensuing water fight escalated quickly, with even Kylie joining in to defend her sister. By the end, everyone was drenched and laughing, the earlier tension forgotten.

The next day, as the group lounged on the patio, a group of teens from a neighboring beach house approached, excitement written all over their faces.

"Hey, you're Adrian Dunphy, right?" one of them asked eagerly. "We've seen your games. You're amazing! Think you could show us a few moves?"

Adrian stood, a modest grin on his face. "I mean, sure, but only if you're ready to lose," he teased, earning laughs from both his friends and the visitors.

Within minutes, the teens had set up a makeshift basketball court in the hard sand, using driftwood to mark the boundaries and a portable hoop that one of them had brought along. Adrian's team consisted of Dylan, Cole, Kendall, and Kylie, while the visitors formed their own crew.

The game began, and the uneven terrain of the sand added a layer of unpredictability. Dylan, ever the entertainer, tripped dramatically on his first run, flailing his arms as he fell face-first into the sand. "I'm down!" he cried, causing everyone to burst into laughter. Cole, quick to capitalize, yelled, "Man down! But I'll carry us to glory!" before promptly missing a layup.

Kendall and Kylie were surprisingly competitive, with Kendall managing a few steals and Kylie landing a solid mid-range shot that had everyone cheering. "Don't underestimate the Jenners," Kylie quipped as she jogged back on defense.

Adrian, however, was the undeniable star. Despite the shifting sand making it difficult to maneuver, he executed flawless crossovers, smooth fadeaways, and even a no-look pass to Kendall that resulted in a score.

"You're like a cheat code," one of the opposing players said in awe after Adrian landed a perfectly timed jump shot.

The game ended with Adrian's team dominating, much to the dismay of their opponents. But the visitors were good sports, clapping Adrian on the back and posing for selfies with him after the match.

As the sun began to set, Dylan spoke up. "I'd like to thank the sand for making this the hardest game of my life. And Adrian, for carrying us."

"Always here to make you look good," Adrian joked, shaking his head.

The group parted ways with smiles all around, the visitors leaving impressed and Adrian feeling a renewed sense of confidence. It wasn't just his skills that shone but the camaraderie and laughter that made the game memorable.

Dylan and Cole initiated a prank war on the final evening, setting traps around the house and pulling harmless tricks on everyone. Kendall and Kylie, initially annoyed, joined forces with Adrian to fight back.

The war reached its climax when Dylan accidentally triggered an indoor sprinkler system, soaking everyone and turning the living room into a slippery mess. "I… might have overdone it," Dylan admitted, grinning sheepishly.

Exhausted but happy, the group piled back into Adrian's car for the drive home. Dylan and Cole, still riding the high of their antics, loudly debated which prank was the best.

"Obviously, the sprinkler prank was the highlight," Dylan declared.

"Only because you set it off by accident," Cole shot back. "If it were intentional, it wouldn't have been half as funny."

Kendall and Kylie, sitting in the back, rolled their eyes in unison. "Can we ban pranks on the next trip?" Kendall asked.

Adrian laughed. "Next trip? I'm still recovering from this one."

Despite the chaos, Adrian couldn't help but smile. The weekend had been an unforgettable mix of hilarity, bonding, and self-reflection. As the car cruised down the highway, with the ocean fading into the distance, he felt more grounded than ever, ready to tackle whatever came next.
