A Dunphy's Basketball System ( Modern Family )

Chapter 18: Chapter 1: Pilot

Adrian's mornings in the Dunphy household were chaotic under normal circumstances, but today felt like stepping into a live taping of a sitcom. His friends—Kendall, Kylie, Dylan, and Cole—had stayed over, which only added more eyes to witness the circus that was about to unfold.

Claire's voice thundered through the house, "Kids! Breakfast! Kids!"

Adrian sat at the kitchen island, watching Phil battle with the coffee maker. Kendall leaned toward him, her head resting in her hands. "Is it always like this?" she asked, half-laughing.

"Worse," Adrian replied with a grin. "This is their tame mode."

Claire stormed into the kitchen, her exasperation palpable. "Phil! Would you get them?"

Phil glanced up from his phone, grinning. "Yeah, just a sec."

"Phil!"

"Got it! Kids!" Phil yelled, his enthusiasm no match for the chaos upstairs.

Haley was the first to emerge, strutting into the kitchen in a skirt so short Adrian wasn't sure it qualified as clothing. Claire immediately honed in, her eyes narrowing.

"Haley, that's not a skirt—it's a belt," Claire snapped. "Phil, say something."

Phil looked up, distracted. "Oh, yeah, it looks cute, sweetheart."

"Thanks, Dad," Haley said with a smirk, grabbing a piece of toast.

Claire's glare could've stopped a freight train. Adrian stifled a laugh, but Kendall and Kylie didn't bother hiding their amusement.

"This feels like performance art," Cole whispered, filming the scene on his phone.

Alex appeared next, holding a book and wearing her trademark unimpressed expression. "Luke got his head stuck in the banister again."

Adrian sighed. "Of course, he did. That kid's consistency is admirable."

Phil sprang into action, grabbing the baby oil. "Don't worry, team! I've got this!"

By now, everyone had gathered to watch as Phil crouched by the stairs, liberally applying oil to Luke's head. Luke squirmed, muttering, "This feels weird."

"You've got this, Luke. Believe in the system," Adrian called out, barely holding back laughter.

With a final tug, Luke popped free, sending Phil stumbling back. "Victory!" Luke shouted, running off triumphantly.

Claire sighed, rubbing her temples. "Great. Now we've got an oily banister and a kid who's going to ruin the house before noon."

Interview: Claire and Phil

Claire and Phil sat side by side in a talking-head segment. Claire's expression was one of weary resolve, while Phil radiated his usual optimism.

Claire: "I grew up wild. And by wild, I mean sneaking out, partying in Florida, waking up on beaches wild. My mission as a mom is to make sure my kids don't make the same mistakes I did."

Phil: "Our mission."

Claire shot him a look. "Right. Our mission."

Phil grinned. "I'm the cool dad. I text, I know all the dances to High School Musical, I—"

Claire: "Phil."

Phil: "Right. I support Claire."

Interview: Adrian , Sprouse Twins, Jenner Twins

Adrian: "Living here? It's like being in the eye of a hurricane."

Kendall: "But in a fun way."

Kylie: "Yeah, it's messy, loud, and a little crazy."

Dylan: "But honestly, if this were a TV show, I'd binge it."

Cole: "Same. And I'd watch with subtitles because half of the chaos doesn't make sense otherwise."

Manny's Soccer Game

Later that morning, the group found themselves at Manny's soccer game. Gloria's voice rang out over the field as she shouted encouragement in rapid-fire Spanish.

"Manny! Go, mi amor! You're amazing! Kick it, kick it!"

Jay sat beside her, sunglasses perched on his nose. "Gloria, maybe tone it down. You're scaring the other parents."

Gloria waved him off. "Passion wins games, Jay. You wouldn't understand."

Adrian sat with his friends a few rows back, enjoying the show. Dylan leaned over. "She's better than cable."

On the field, Manny's focus wandered as a girl on a bike rode by. The ball sailed past him, and the other team scored.

"Dammit, Manny!" a teammate shouted.

Gloria leaped to her feet, shouting, "You want to take him out? I'll take you out!"

Jay groaned, muttering, "Here we go."

After the game, Manny declared his intention to quit soccer and confess his love to the girl. Jay handed him a dollar. "Here. Go buy her a soda and reconsider."

Interview: Gloria and Jay

Gloria and Jay sat side by side. Gloria gestured animatedly while Jay sat stoically.

Gloria: "I come from a small village in Colombia. It's beautiful and passionate. Number one for murders!"

Jay: "She's not kidding."

Gloria: "Jay is very serious. He's from the city. He sells shelves."

Jay: "Closets. We sell closets."

Mitchell and Cam's Plane Ride

Meanwhile, Mitchell and Cameron were returning from Vietnam with their newly adopted daughter, Lily. The plane ride had been eventful.

Passengers cooed over Lily as Mitchell shifted uncomfortably. "Yes, she's adorable. We just adopted her."

A man leaned over. "You and your wife must be thrilled."

Cam arrived just in time, arms full of snacks. "Not a wife. Husband," Mitchell corrected, his tone clipped.

The man blinked, unsure of what to say. Meanwhile, a woman nearby muttered something about cream puffs.

Mitchell stood up, launching into an impassioned speech. "This baby would've grown up in a crowded orphanage if it weren't for us! Love knows no race, creed, or gender!"

Cam tugged at his sleeve, whispering, "She's talking about the cream puffs Lily is eating."

Mitchell froze, mortified, as Cam offered to buy headphones for the entire plane. "Peace and quiet on us!"

Dinner at Mitchell and Cameron's House

Mitchell paced nervously in the living room, glancing at the door every few seconds. "Why did we have to do this? Couldn't we have eased them into it?"

Cameron swept past him with a tray of hors d'oeuvres. "Relax, Mitchell. Family is about surprises."

Adrian leaned against the wall, smirking. "Our family does surprises better than most. This is going to be fun."

Kendall was perched on the arm of the couch, flipping through her phone. "Fun for us, maybe. You look like you're about to faint, Mitch."

Kylie nodded, trying to stifle a giggle. "Yeah, deep breaths. We'll hold your hand if it gets too much."

"Not helping," Mitchell muttered as the doorbell rang. He stiffened like a board.

Adrian hopped up and swung the door open, revealing Phil and Claire, along with Haley, Alex, and Luke. "The cavalry has arrived!" Phil announced, handing over a bottle of wine.

Claire gave Adrian a quick hug before turning to Mitchell. "Hi, Mitchell. You okay? You look like you're hosting the Oscars."

Mitchell forced a smile. "Fine. Everything's fine. Come in."

The room quickly filled with chatter as the family spread out. Haley and Alex headed to the hors d'oeuvres, while Luke inspected the fancy centerpiece. Phil sidled up to Cameron, pointing to the decor. "Nice spread, Cam. Did you use a decorator or is this all you?"

"All me, Phil," Cameron said proudly. "Feel free to take notes."

The doorbell rang again, and Adrian nudged Mitchell toward the door. "Go. Don't make it weird."

Mitchell opened the door to reveal Jay and Gloria, with Manny trailing behind. Gloria immediately swept into the room, exclaiming, "This is beautiful, Mitchell! Cam, you outdid yourself!"

"Thank you, Gloria," Cam said, visibly glowing. "I wanted tonight to feel special."

Jay nodded at Adrian. "How's it going, kid? You ready for basketball season?"

Adrian grinned. "Always, Jay. You coming to the first game?"

"Wouldn't miss it," Jay said gruffly before turning to Cam. "Now, where's the food? Manny's been talking about cookies for an hour."

As the family settled into the living room, Adrian noticed the nervous glance Mitchell shot toward the nursery. "You sure you're ready for this?" Adrian asked quietly, leaning close to Mitchell.

"No, but it's too late to back out now," Mitchell whispered.

At the dinner table, Adrian and his friends were seated with Haley, Alex, and Luke, their laughter mingling with the adults' conversation. Luke attempted to juggle a bread roll, which promptly hit Gloria's glass, spilling red wine across the table.

"Luke!" Claire scolded, grabbing napkins.

"It was an accident!" Luke said, looking sheepish.

"Sure it was," Alex quipped, earning a laugh from Adrian.

As the noise settled, Mitchell stood, clearing his throat. "Alright, everyone, thank you for coming tonight. I… I have something I need to tell you."

Jay leaned back in his chair, arms crossed. "If Cam comes out here with boobs, I'm leaving."

"Dad!" Claire scolded.

Phil leaned toward Haley. "I hope this is about the mural. I really want to see it."

Cam gave Mitchell an encouraging nod, then disappeared toward the nursery. The lights dimmed, and the opening notes of The Lion King's "Circle of Life" began to play. Everyone looked around in confusion.

Then Cam entered, holding Lily aloft in a dramatic pose, a spotlight illuminating them. "We adopted a baby!" Cam declared, his voice ringing with pride.

The room froze. Jay's jaw dropped, Gloria gasped, and Haley's fork clattered to her plate. Adrian's friends exchanged wide-eyed glances.

"Is this… real?" Kendall whispered to Adrian.

"Oh, it's real," Adrian replied, watching the scene unfold with a mix of awe and amusement.

Claire recovered first, rushing forward. "Oh my god, she's beautiful!" she exclaimed.

Phil clapped. "Her name's Lily? Isn't that gonna be hard for her to say?"

Gloria took Lily from Cam, tears in her eyes. "She's perfect, Mitchell. I'm so happy for you."

Haley leaned toward Adrian, whispering, "Is it bad that I'm jealous of a baby?"

Luke, meanwhile, looked puzzled. "Are we gonna call her Aunt Lily?"

Jay, still seated, rubbed his temple. "I said this was a bad idea, and maybe it is… but what do I know?" He stood, walking over to Mitchell. "I've been trying to get this dad thing right for years, and I still don't have it down. But you?" He gestured to Lily. "You've got this. She's one of us now."

Mitchell's voice broke as he handed Lily to Jay. "Do you want to meet your granddaughter?"

Jay nodded, cradling Lily with a softness that surprised everyone. "Hey, little podsticker. Welcome to the family."

The room seemed to hold its breath as everyone gathered around Lily, cooing and smiling. Cam dabbed at his eyes with a napkin. "Red-headed daddy is proud daddy," he said, his voice thick with emotion.

Kylie leaned toward Adrian. "I'm not crying. You're crying."

Adrian chuckled. "Just admit it. This is wholesome."

As the family began to eat, the warmth and joy of the moment lingered, the chaos fading into a rare moment of peace. Lily had found her place in the family—and Adrian couldn't help but feel that, somehow, this crazy, wonderful family had found theirs in her, too.

Interview: Mitchell and Cam

Mitchell: "I was nervous about how my family would react to Lily."

Cam: "They love her. How could they not? She's perfection."

Mitchell: "It's just… Dad can be a little old-school."

Cam: "But even he couldn't resist her charm."

Later that night, Adrian and his friends sat on the patio. Kendall leaned back, gazing at the stars. "Your family is wild," she said.

"And amazing," Kylie added. "It's messy, but it works."

Adrian smiled. "That's the Dunphys. Messy, chaotic, and one of a kind."

From the trampoline in the yard, Luke yelled, "Adrian! Come play!"

Adrian shook his head, laughing. "Duty calls."

Kendall smirked. "Good luck. You're gonna need it."
