Chapter 40:
Chapter 40: Siblings:
In the room, the mother and daughter held each other for a while, finally calming down.
Zhang Ru didn’t bring up the earlier incident again, and Ji Yan, of course, didn’t mention it either.
After a while, they were back to being a loving mother and daughter.
Finally, Zhang Ru stood up and said, “Let’s forget about today, but you mustn’t let anything like this happen again. Keep your distance from that boy, understand?”
Ji Yan hesitated for a moment. Seeing her mother frown, she quickly responded, “I understand, Mom.”
On one side was her closest relative, and on the other was a boy she liked.
Ji Yan felt a bit conflicted but chose to reassure her mother first.
Unaware of her daughter’s thoughts, Zhang Ru smiled happily at Ji Yan’s words and was about to leave when her eyes fell on the little girl sculpture. She said, “Give me that sculpture. I’ll throw it away.”
“No, Mom,” Ji Yan refused instinctively.
Zhang Ru’s eyes widened. “You still want to see that boy, don’t you?”
“I… I…” Ji Yan stammered, explaining, “I mean, it’s too late now. I’ll throw it away tomorrow.”
Zhang Ru didn’t suspect anything, smiled and said, “Okay, then. I’ll go to rest now, and you should go to bed early too. Good night, my dear daughter.”
She kissed Ji Yan on the forehead and left the room.
Ji Yan sat on the bed in a daze for a while.
Finally, she decided to hide the little girl sculpture in a seldom-used backpack.
…
On the bus, Qin Luo hummed a cheerful tune, reflecting his good mood.
Earlier he checked on Madam Zhang on a whim, just to see if she had the same character setting as Ji Yan. But he never expected Madam Zhang’s character to be so unique.
“Madam Zhang, you like your daughter so much; does your husband know?”
He couldn’t help but marvel at this and thought that Ji Yan’s father must not be an ordinary person either.
Seeing Madam Zhang’s cold yet charming demeanor, she must have been a great beauty in her youth.
Qin Luo wondered how Ji Yan’s father had pursued her back then.
If there was a chance in the future, they should share some experiences and insights.
Qin Luo’s mind wandered with idle thoughts as he arrived at the entrance of a residential complex.
Instead of returning to school, he came to his home in Shanghai.
Calling it home wasn’t entirely accurate, though.
Qin Luo wasn’t from Shanghai but from a small county in the north.
His parents were an ordinary middle-aged couple running a small restaurant, living a simple life. They had done two extraordinary things in their lives: having an excellent son like Qin Luo and adopting a daughter before Qin Luo was born.
The first was Qin Luo’s self-assessment, but he also acknowledged the second as extraordinary.
Before Qin Luo was born, his mother struggled with infertility and was eventually diagnosed with a condition that made it difficult to conceive.
Heartbroken and feeling guilty, his mother cried every day.
His father, unable to bear her sorrow, decided to adopt a little girl from an orphanage. The girl was cute and quickly won over his mother’s heart, easing her pain.
The couple completed the formal adoption process and became the girl’s official parents.
When the girl turned five, another great joy came to the family.
Qin Luo’s mother unexpectedly became pregnant, giving birth to a healthy baby boy.
This was a miraculous blessing for the Qin family, who had resigned themselves to never having a biological child.
That boy was Qin Luo.
As a child, Qin Luo had a vivid impression of his sister.
Besides being beautiful, she was talented in singing and dancing. During family visits during the holidays, her performances were always the highlight, earning her constant praise as a future star.
Influenced by this, his sister developed a dream of becoming a star to repay her parents and support her little brother.
Like any older sister, she would boss her brother around and sometimes blame him for her mischief.
But if anyone else bullied him, she would fiercely defend him like a little tiger.
Unless the bullies were their parents, in which case she could only stand by helplessly.
Qin Luo always believed she was his real sister.
Until he was fifteen and she was twenty, a group of strangers came to their house. Returning home from school, he saw many fancy cars, including Mercedes, BMWs, and Audis, parked outside.
Eager to share what he saw with his family, he was shocked upon entering the house. Strangers filled their home, his parents appeared uneasy, and his sister stood by the window, looking lost.
It turned out these people were his sister’s biological parents. They had lost her due to an accident and spent twenty years searching for her. They found her through a music program where she participated in an audition, catching the public’s eye with her beauty and voice. Her biological parents recognized her by a birthmark on her arm.
After confirming her identity, they came to this small town and explained the situation to Qin Luo’s parents.
Although young Qin Luo couldn’t grasp all the details, he understood they wanted to take his sister away, and his parents had agreed.
Crying, he pleaded with them not to take her and even fought the strangers. In the end, his parents pulled him back, and he watched through tearful eyes as they took her away.
Qin Luo was angry and asked his parents why they didn’t stop them.
His father sighed, and his mother looked reluctant. They, too, wished to keep their daughter, but her biological parents could offer her a better life.
Qin Luo’s parents had raised her as their own, and as parents, they wanted the best for her. Her biological family could help her achieve her dream of becoming a star.
So, for her future and to reunite her with her blood relatives, they agreed.
Her biological parents were kind, offering a large sum of money and promising they could still visit her. Though the money would secure their family’s future, Qin Luo’s father refused, saying it would feel like selling his daughter.
Since then, Qin Luo’s sister rarely contacted them, except for occasional phone calls.
Two years ago, Qin Luo left to Shanghai…
