Chapter 34: Nyx Falazar
Count Falazar heaved a sigh at the mention of the daughter he most worried about—not because she was weak or naive—but because of her… unnatural obsession with Knox Falazar, her younger brother.
"Since his birth, that troublesome girl has always stuck close to Knox," Count Falazar said, his face twitching in several spots. "And because of Knox's unique ways of amazing that girl without moving a single muscle, they've since become virtually inseparable. If not for me sending her to the Battlefield to put some distance between her and Knox, he never would've left the nest and spread his wings. That would've subsequently put a corkscrew in the Prophet's prophecy, which was something I couldn't allow."
The Head Butler had an -Ah- moment as a few missing pieces clicked inside his head. "I had often wondered why it was that you sent Young Miss Nyx to such a dangerous place with death around every corner. Being the young girl she was, it didn't seem right—even if she was a once-in-a-thousand-year genius and over a hundred years old. But now… now I understand precisely why you did what you did."
"That's good," Count Falazar said as he sank into the back of his leather chair. "Now then, I have some more paperwork to deal with. You're dismissed."
"Yes, of course, My Lord," the Head Butler complied respectfully before slowly backing up and fading away. "Even if I'm not to directly help the Eldest Young Master, I shall keep tabs on the Ten Thousand Poisons Sect and any other factions wishing to harm him. If anything, indirectly warning him of incoming danger is unlikely to mess with the prophecy."
Count Falazar nodded. "Yes, that should be fine," he said while closing his eyes. "Just make sure not to take things too far. The less we interfere with Knox's journey, the less we risk interfering with a fate that will not only take him to greater heights but also the rest of the Falazar Family."
"Perhaps," he continued with a hopeful glint, "perhaps one day, we'll no longer be constricted to the small Water Kingdom or the Elemental Nations. There might even arrive a point where our Falazar Family looks down at the Azura Empire from above. But such a whimsical dream—it all rides upon the tail flaps of Knox."
A withered smile breezed outside of the Falazar Family Mansion.
"I pray that's the case, My Lord. Maybe then your forefathers can rest easy in the afterlife."
— A certain amount of time later, within a large tan-colored tent erected in the center of a weapon and corpse-covered battlefield —
"This report," said a woman with long black hair as dark as the night sky. "Is it true?" she asked, her face shrouded in shadows and her voice seething with rage. "Is it true that wanted posters of my Knox have been posted all over the Kingdom!? Tell me, IS IT TRUE!???"
OOOM!!!
The tent the woman was standing in was enchanted to a point where even Nascent Soul Realm Cultivators would find it difficult to put a scratch on it. Yet, with this outburst of the starry-eyed girl, cuts appeared all over the massive tent. Peeks of the bleak scenery outside could now be seen from within.
"G-General Nyx," said a soldier, bowing with his head down. "T…The information is 100% accurate…! The Ten Thousand Poisons Sect has been at odds with Young Master Knox Falazar for a while, and now the Thorne, Roderick, and Buford Families have just declared their intention to capture or kill… Y-Your… your…"
The Nascent Soul Realm soldier hesitated when he saw the terrifying face Nyx Falazar was making. He shuddered, his entire existence bearing the weight of unspeakable fear.
"I'LL KILL THEM ALL!!!"
RUMBLE—!!
The battlefield violently shook, with swords and spears slipping out of their places in the ground. Tens of thousands of Water Kingdom soldiers felt the hair on the back of their necks stand on end.
In synchronization, they looked toward the source of the rumbling and terrorizing sensation they were feeling.
However, upon realizing who it was that was menacingly floating above her tent, releasing wave after wave of energy, they immediately averted their eyes. None—not even the Nascent Soul Realm Commanders—wished to incur the wrath of the Devil Woman.
With a devilish glare that could cut through steel, Nyx Falazar looked between all of her subordinates. They shivered in response. She coldly snorted, figuring it a waste to take her anger out on a bunch of wastrels.
"I'm leaving—" she attempted to say, but was interrupted by her Second-in-Command:
"You can't, General!" he shouted nervously. "The Fire Nation is planning something big! If you leave now and the Northern Border is attacked, then…"
"Then what?" asked Nyx, her voice oozing killing intent. "Tell me: what will happen if I leave!?"
"!!!"
"G-General… If you leave now, the Northern Border will fall," the Second-in-Command said through chattering teeth. "And by that point, there will no longer be a brother or family for you to return to… The Fire Nation Mongols will swarm in and spread out to every part of our Kingdom within the hour…"
Nyx's face twisted in fury as her aura pressed down on her Half-step Soul Formation Realm Second-in-Command. He was nearly crushed to death, but before such a gruesome outcome could come to pass, the cold-faced Nyx angrily huffed and dispersed her aura. She then took off into the air and shot into the distance at several times the speed of light.
Her voice, however, trailed off in her stead, giving just the tiniest bit of solace to her Second-in-Command:
"I'm going to the Grand General's Encampment; don't fuck things up here while I'm gone."
"Y-Yes…" was all Jacob could say as he shakily watched the shooting star of black and purple light vanish into the horizon.
FWIP!
Once Nyx arrived at the edge of a giant mountain range, her cold eyes honed in on the several-hundred-mile-wide encampment. Within it resided more than a dozen Soul Formation Realm Masters, as well as hundreds of thousands of cultivators ranging from the Qi Condensation to the Nascent Soul Realms.
This was the Main Army of the Water Kingdom. The army that kept watch at the Northwestern Border and protected the Kingdom from the Fire and Wind Nations, both of whom were considered to be on shaky ground with them.
