Chapter 10: Show me your soul

Look at his fingers. They looked blackened as if from a burn, then Stockwell said.

"Looks like a suicide, this symbol is for draining life force" Sebastian looked the body over and said,

"They're still other symbols, we can't be sure yet."

"Yeah, but another problem, I've looked I don't see any exit wound"

"What?" Sebastian. "So where would the blood come from?"

"Unless he heals himself afterward but his hands look clean, they shouldn't be that clean, not for someone who is about to do this."

"We'll have the blood tested. when's the bureau getting here?" Sebastian said.

Soon

Sebastian calmly steps over the body, trying to see more of the symbol anyhow he could. It was a small circle relative to the corpse with a smaller circle within and with symbols drawn inside very small circles drawn in the space between the two and at the north, south, east, and west points of the circle.

Sebastian could only see east, could see parts of the north, and had an idea what it could be; south and west were completely hidden from him.

"Sir!" Pride called for him, he turned to her. "Look!" she said, pointing at the snow-covered floor; Sebastian looked and saw she was pointing at a dent in the snow. He looked closely and realized it wasn't just a dent, it was a footprint.

He walked closer and saw the marking to confirm. "How didn't I spot that?"Sebastian said. "You did good Pride." She smiled and said, it's a man's feet.

"Yes, and it's not mine." he turns to Stockwell, but already he had a strong suspicion it wasn't; the whole thing looked old, but the state the room was in couldn't convince anyone otherwise.

"Show me your boot." Stockwell raised his boot, revealing its sole; Sebastian looked at it and looked at the footprints. "It's a shame it's not your Stockwell; it would have made for an interesting case."

He turned to Pride and said, "Check if it's William," she nodded and left the room. William and Ruby stood outside. William had left because Ruby couldn't stand it anymore.

He left to console her and had just been resting his back on the wall beside her. She looked shaken; he looked tired; it had been quite a long day for them both. Willaim couldn't help but reflect on the whole day.

From the wave of energy to the bureau to the erasure of another wizard, he heard footsteps coming from the steps at the end of the hall, "be careful!" said someone from the steps.

It's the bureau, he thought, then Pride walked out of the room; she looked towards the stairs drawn by the creaking noise coming from it.

"They're here, captain!" she said.

"Alright!"

She turns to William. "Hey William" he looked at her, wondering what her issue was now. "Show me your sole." He misheard her and wondered if she had gone mad or was making a joke he wasn't in the mood for.

"What?" he said in a weary voice. "Show me your sole, didn't you hear us"

What! They were within earshot of the room; they could hear everything, but they were in such a state that the words coming from the travelers within the room never occurred to them.

"We found a footprint," Pride said. "It's not any of ours, so we wanted to rule out everyone." William looked at her, noting every word she said, it came out so direct and cold he could only respond with a word he wouldn't normally use.

"Right," he said, he raised his leg and showed her the bottom of his shoe.

"Captain!" She yelled, "It's not his."

"Well, it looks like we might have a murder!"

William felt a bit of excitement in his voice and wondered why. It had just become another job to them, why treat it as simply that? He felt so bitter and couldn't hold back his tears, memories flooded his mind.

He remembered the one time his rival had been kind to him. It was a school-wide examination, and they had been tasked with the retrieval of an ancient artifact from the belly of a dungeon.

It was here when he made a grave mistake and got separated from his group, only to end up finding Ivan all alone, but he couldn't be less gleeful; in fact, Ivan only got sad when he showed up.

They walked together for the rest of the day, one dispute to another, On the final day they made it to the artifact but the last challenge saw him trapped and in danger, in such cases, it was very common for team members to abandon each other and seek glory for them self but Ivan who wasn't in his team or his friend saved him.

William couldn't trust him; he felt a sinister cause behind his act; he just couldn't be that generous, he thought William; he even offered to let him take the glory for finishing the dungeon.

Blackzad turned him down, stating the one riddle he had solved as a reason for them both to get equal recognition. William thought it was arbitrary; he knew Ivan could have solved it easily and the only reason he had been the one was because he covered Ivan's mouth with a spell and screamed it into the cursed ruins.

Ivan laughed at him, "All right," he said, "here are my demands. Cake."

"What?" William said, visibly confused.

"You heard me, I want cake"

"No, you're not serious"

"The headmaster cakes, every single day for a month."

"But that's too easy."

"I don't know, ever tried making one yourself, I did, but that only made me responsible for the genocide of all the vermin in my apartment. So I want the HM's cake. Just a piece, that would do and only for a month."

William cried he couldn't hold it back anymore. The men from the bureau walked in without paying any mind to them. William wiped the tears off his face he turned to Ruby and said,

"They're about to move the body should we go in?"

"I'm fine," she said.

He let out a deep breath and walked towards the door. As he got there, he saw the three of them heading out.

"Just where are you going?" Sebastian said.

"Oh, I wanted to see…"

"It's all been seen, nothing new remains, I'm afraid. Pride, you attend to her, you know your mission"

"Search the library for past records, anything out of place compared with our concrete future reference"

"Right. And Stockwell?"

"Interrogate the student to data log timelines memorabilia."

Good, he looked at Williams, and with a smile, he said, "As for you and I, we're going to investigate a murder."

"What murder, don't we have our plates full with this one"

"Don't fret, darling, we're still eating; we're going to investigate the murder of Abbott Skarsgard."

William's eyes widened; he couldn't believe what he just heard, Sebastian, seeing the look in his eyes, chuckled.
