Chapter 94 : Looking for a safehouse

What Uriel needed more than anything right now was to keep everything he could a secret to remain safe until he made sense of things. He also needed to understand his new found power, if there was any to begin with.

The last thing he remembered before waking up at the hospital, was Water warlock stating he wasn't a worthy candidate to bear his blessing so he wasn't sure of what had actually happened. All he knew was that he was now able to regenerate.

There was also the need for a hideout, in case he needed to disappear for a while. Maybe Nika's suspicions were unfounded, but Uriel couldn't deny the possibility of being targeted by the Mapple corporation in the future if they found out the truth about what really happened in Chichén Itzá and that, not only did he use the dagger, but also kept the clay figurine for himself.

All of those things would only be possible if he had a place of his own.

With this in mind he asked Nika to hide inside his trait and, instead of heading to campus like he wanted to, he pulled out his phone and searched online for a cheap place that could fit his needs. There were many upscale apartments that looked really nice, but Uriel knew those were completely out of his budget for the time being, at least until he got paid by the Mapple corporation.

Left with no choice, Uriel headed towards a place he knew too well for his liking, the slums.

The slums was the place where all the second class citizens hurdled together, where even law was open to interpretation and only the strong survived. It wasn't, by all means, a nice place but Uriel was already familiar with it since he was raised near the wall.

Despite having enough credits to rent a place anywhere he wanted, he preferred to buy a place at a cheap location. Having a place of his own would allow him to invest in the place, do whatever he wanted in there and it also came with the side benefit of not leaving any paper trace, since the slums was the go-to place for criminal activities.

He wanted a place with an open space big enough to practice his shooting, work out and improve his aim. He also wanted to be closer to the gate than to college, mostly because he would still live in the dorms during school time but also because the place could function as a headquarters for hunting.

Although Uriel wasn't an optimistic person by nature, he liked to think far in the future. Even when he was a child, he always saw the big picture, which in turn drove him to pursue higher education instead of the path his Uncle had chosen for him.

Thinking about his uncle always got him in a bitter mood, the fact that he was now heading towards the slums also didn't help as he only had sour memories from that place, but now he was an adult and also an ascended.

The first building Uriel visited looked like an old school, it was certainly spacious, but it lacked privacy as it had big windows all over the place.

The second place was in shabby condition and it looked like it would fall apart at any moment, it was as though it was hit by an earthquake or something similar. Because of its poor condition it was also impossible to know what type of building it used to be so Uriel decided to move on to the next building.

The third place was built with modern materials, compressed plastic and alloy but, not only was it too flashy, it was also too small for Uriel's taste. Besides, it was also too far from the gate, something most criminals would appreciate, but it would make things difficult for him.

The fact that it looked expensive didn't have any importance in his decision making at all, or so he tried to convince himself, but it did look like it was completely out of his reach.

Finally, he found a place with potential.

It was a three story spacious concrete building that used to be a factory, it was so old it could have been considered a historical place long before 'the arrival' but since it was reinforced concrete, albeit just the regular kind, it looked sturdy enough.

The first floor was an open space, perfect for the needs of an ascended, the second floor had several rooms that used to be offices and the third floor was a bit smaller because it didn't cover the whole extension of the building. The roof had two huge water tanks adjusted for industrial needs, they looked old but still functional.

Everything in the whole place was gray, except for the mossy corners. There were several cracks all over the place, but even a place like that felt like a palace to a young man like him. He explored every nook and cranny trying to come up with different ideas on how to furnish it and where to place his stuff.

Something like that would have taken a lot of time, but it took him no more than five minutes to finally realize he didn't have any stuff with him and, even if he was able to buy the building he would probably be left penniless. All his belongings were at the college dorm, right now he only had the clothes they gave him when he left the hospital at the zeppelin and whatever was inside of his trait.

Uriel could have asked Nika her opinion, but there were two reasons why he didn't do it. He asked her to remain inside his trait until he called for her and also, he didn't actually care for her opinion.

The place was absolutely perfect for him, it fulfilled all of his needs, possessed a historical background as one of the oldest steel factories in what used to be the state of Texas and the location couldn't be better as it was close to the main street that lead directly to the west gate.

Excited, he called the number on the site and half an hour later there was a woman outside the building.

"Hello? anybody here?" The woman called, prompting Uriel to head out.

Uriel gazed at her with curiosity as she was about his age, but she was already a corporate drone. It was evident by her attire, but also because of the bags under her eyes and her disheveled hair. Her appearance was that of a sleep deprived woman with bad eating habits and a harsh life.

She was relieved to see that the man who came outside didn't look dangerous. In her line of work she was exposed to all sorts of dangers as she would often find herself alone with men in abandoned buildings, but she was just a newbie at a real state company based on the slums which obviously meant she couldn't do anything about it.

"My name is Vivian and I'll be answering all your questions." She said getting ready to get hit on like usual. At least now it wasn't a dirty old man and she could endure some flirting with a client she found handsome.

"I want to buy this place... anonymously." Uriel said unblinking.

"Excuse me? Did you mean to say you want to rent the place?" Her hopes of renting a place like that to a young man like Uriel were low, but she would have never thought he would even have the means to buy it.

"No, I mean what I said. Though I would like to know the price first." He said awkwardly.
