Chapter 98 : Party in the slums Part 1
Night in the slums was not safe, not in the slightest. Many dangers lurked in the shadows and dark alleyways were present at every turn. Although it was usually referred to as a lawless place, something like that was far from the truth. There was a single law people respected and it was the curfew. Even if it wasn't an actual law, people knew better than to break it.
Even bars and casinos offered accommodations for their guests during night time, as even most delinquents were afraid of going out at such hours.
The sole exception to this was the main streets, those that headed directly to the city gates. Despite that, a small girl walked under the dim light of the streetlights just after sunset, far from the main avenue, far from safety, inside one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the whole city.
If crime was the produce of the slums, this neighborhood had a lot to offer. Drugs, prostitution, contraband, thievery, kidnapping, anything was possible withing the boundaries of the slums.
Had this been any other person she would have probably rush her steps trying to get to her destination as soon as possible. Still, Luna walked with a nonchalant expression under her hoodie looking at a small piece of paper.
"Finally! I knew she was coming!" Sam shouted as soon as he spotted Luna in the distance.
"What took you so long?" Medusa asked.
"Uhm... I got lost." Luna replied hesitantly. It wasn't Sam's shout that drew her towards the abandoned building, but the eerie shimmer caused by Medusa's trait that stood up in the darkness and tricked her into believing there was a loose cryptid inside the city walls. "What are you doing here?" She tilted her head in confusion as she wasn't expecting to meet with them at a place like that.
Medusa and Sam had been waiting for Luna outside an old looking factory for a while. They weren't worried for her safety as they knew she was an ascended just like them. The reason why they waited outside for so long was because the place looked like it was haunted and neither of them wanted to go in first.
Medusa didn't know what to think, had it not been for the piece of paper she received she would have thought her encounter with Uriel was nothing but a hallucination. Luna, though, still hoped it wasn't Uriel but a skinwalker the one who sent her the letter. It didn't make sense for Uriel to do something like that completely out of the blue, but she didn't know what to think anymore.
The group stood in front of the double doors and Sam knocked after gulping down a lump of saliva. Even if it was really Uriel who invited them, everything was just too cryptic and he didn't like it one bit. Or that was the case until the doors opened revealing the figure of a slender woman with tanned skin, wearing nothing but a long shirt that reached her thighs and a pair of bunny slippers.
"It seems we got the wrong address. I'm sorry for disturbing your evening." Medusa apologized as she didn't know the woman in front of her and prepared to leave, but Nika prevented her from doing so.
"Aren't you Uriel's friends? He's expecting you guys." Nika led the group inside the building. The first floor still looked like nothing but an abandoned factory, however, as soon as they went upstairs they gasped in amazement. It was still too spacious to be considered cozy, but it was clean and there was a red circular carpet, a small table and some plastic chairs.
"Hey! You guys are late." Uriel greeted them as he came out of the bathroom drying his hair with a towel. "Don't you know about the curfew in the slums? You're not supposed to be outside during night, everyone knows this."
"We're all ascended, it doesn't matter for us." Luna coldly replied without even wasting saliva on a 'welcome back'.
Uriel noticed something was off, not because of Luna's cold reply which was to be expected, but the atmosphere felt too dense.
"What's the matter? Aren't you guys happy to see me?" He tried to alleviate the tension with a smile but failed miserably.
Both Medusa and Sam had their eyes stuck to Nika. It didn't take a genius to figure out what was going on and Uriel quickly understood the situation. A young man just finished taking a shower and a woman dressed with nothing but a long shirt, it was as straightforward as it could get.
Although in reality, it was just a coincidence as he just finished working out and had to take a shower, while Nika was just an idiot who didn't care for pants.
Medusa was flustered, jealous and angry at the same time as her worst fear was seemingly true, yet the one exerting the most pressure was actually Sam.
"How could you do something like this to me!?" Sam cried.
"I'm sorry, I know I should have said something, but I tried contacting you before setting off and none of you replied." Uriel quickly apologized for leaving for his expedition in a rush, but that had nothing to do with the reason why Sam was outraged.
"When did you land a girlfriend this hot and why didn't you tell me!? Aren't we friends?" Sam too thought the reason behind Uriel's disappearance was that he got himself a girlfriend, but he never expected his new girlfriend to be so beautiful. Even if Nika was a bit older than Uriel, she was still quite a catch and he couldn't believe he didn't say a word about it to him.
"She's not my girlfriend. She's my... actually, she's no one to me." He said coldly.
"Of course she's not his girlfriend... he's in love with me." Luna said with her usual poker face, no one could have guessed her true feelings, or that would have been the case if not for the fact that she was blushing up to her ears.
Speechless, Medusa didn't know what to think anymore and she let herself fall heavily on the chair, but it was the cheap plastic kind and it broke immediately, making her fall butt first into the new carpet.
In the meantime, Nika laughed heartily at the scene. It seemed as though she really enjoyed the ensuing chaos of the many misunderstandings.
