Chapter 14: Their visions

Chapter 14: Their visions

"It appears my strength has been sealed," Athena said after leaving Noah's embrace and looking at everyone around her, then into herself.

Noah explained, "We're in the first trial, The Trial Of Loyalty. I awakened today, met Eleonora, and then you."

Eleonora added, "We need time to unlock our abilities, and I believe we might learn something new about ourselves as we grow stronger with handsome."

"I agree with you," Athena nodded. "What is the situation now?"

After she learned about the trial and its meaning, Athena commended her new companions for their deeds. They had done well so far, and Noah even defeated a stronger ghoul on his own, which earned many points in Athena's heart.

"We should prioritize reaching the mansion as soon as possible. I hope there might be supplies there, but if not, we'll have to search this garden for anything edible. I can make coats, too."

Given that they were in a trial where strength and loyalty mattered most, Athena's attitude seemed normal. But after hearing her story, Noah didn't want her to focus only on that.

"How about you two talk about your relationship goals while I speak with the others about this trial?" Noah said, capturing his companions' attention.

Eleonora puffed out her chest, and Athena took a relaxed stance. Noah smiled at them, then headed over to the other couples and the lone woman who no longer had a companion.

"We have no idea about handsome's new world. He is registered to a new one after leaving his old place, so we have no clue what to expect once we leave this trial. Regardless of the world, I want to have a lot of fun with him, try new things, and show off that we are the best couple," Eleonora said to Athena, blushing like a new bride.

Athena nodded. "Thy idea is pleasant. I like it. As for me, I desire a large mansion with many pets. Wolves, tigers, lions, and dragons."

"Oh, that's interesting. You can tame them?" Eleonora's eyes sparkled.

Athena beamed. "Of course. Wolves naturally acknowledge me as their queen. If there is already a leader, I must defeat him first. The same is true for other creatures. Punch them hard and they submit. Then you can teach them tricks and learn more about them, right?"

"Right," Eleonora said with a nod.

If Noah had been there, he would have been shocked.

"Anything else?" Eleonora asked.

Athena pondered. "Cooking sounds pleasant. I have not cooked anything normal. It is not that I dislike raw flesh or what nature provides, but preparing something aristocratic with seasonings, along with warm and nice drinks, sounds delightful. I want to learn how to make coffee, too. Then, of course… marriage and children."

Eleonora's tails shot up. "Children!"

"Dost thou not want them?" Athena tilted her head.

Eleonora's voice cracked. "H-haha. Pets are enough for now, right? If you can't handle a few pets, can you handle children? You can't punch your own kids!"

"You are correct," Athena admitted, touching her chin and falling into deep thought.

Eleonora wiped sweat from her brow and inwardly screamed, 'So early. We need to have a lot of fun first before we add more members. Yes. Better to add more harem partners than children!'

That thought made Eleonora calmer about a harem.

"Would you like to come with us?" Noah knelt beside the woman who had a simple healing ability.

She was the companion of the bronze-skinned man and had lost him. He had not cared much about her and cast her aside. Her new life in this trial was pitiful, and Noah wanted her to at least clear this trial and start over.

She shook her head. "I will cease to exist soon."

"Is that a rule?" Noah asked.

"It isn't. Like the man who came to life from fiction, I'm similar and could treasure this life. I just don't want to," she replied.

She had been brought into this trial with a weak ability. If her beginning was already so bad, she saw no reason to continue. It felt like only hardships awaited her.

Noah did not know what to say. He remembered how he felt before coming here. He wanted to assure her everything could change, but who was he to say that? If he had not come here, he would have stayed in his old life.

He would be no different from her.

If someone awakened a weak ability in a world where mana was common, their life was set to be difficult.

"I see. I'm not one to tell you what to do, but I hope you rethink your decision. Do you have a part of a key, by the way?" Noah asked.

After speaking to others, he confirmed they all had fragments. Everyone needed to work together or fight each other for the fragments.

Without a word, the woman pointed at a broken piece lying on the ground where the ghoul had died.

"Thank you," Noah said.

He walked over and scooped it up. With all fragments gathered, a golden key formed on its own. Then, a marble pillar rose from the ground. It seemed to demand the key, which would lead everyone closer to the mansion.

Noah inserted the key and turned. A hidden pathway opened underground, revealing stairs lit by red torches. It looked eerie and cold, like an invitation to a harder trial.

Once the others gathered, Noah turned to the lone woman.

She smiled at him and shook her head.

Noah raised his voice. "I don't know to whom you swore loyalty, but if the other person doesn't value you, there's no point staying shackled. I hope you will find happiness."

He felt he had already said too much, so he left it at that. Maybe he was soft because of his own experiences.

Noah then took the first step down the stairs, guiding everyone into the unknown.

Outside, the moon turned red for a few seconds.

The lone woman smiled and slowly vanished.

Someone else heard Noah's words too.
