Chapter 58: Siege
Chapter 58: Siege
“W-what’s wrong?”
Ji Lingruo was startled by the unusual tone in You Su’s voice. It was the first time she had heard him sound so panicked.
“What color was the jade pendant?” You Su asked urgently.
“Light green,” Ji Lingruo replied.
A light green jade pendant? A test? What else could it be but an Evil Repelling Token?
“Junior Sister, come out here and see if this is the same kind of pendant I have,” You Su said, forcing himself to stay calm.
“Oh…”
After a moment of rustling clothes, Ji Lingruo opened the door and stepped out. Her delicate face was tense, as if she sensed that she had made a grave mistake.
She took the Evil Repelling Token from You Su and examined it carefully. “Yes, it looks just like this one.”
When she finished speaking, she noticed that You Su’s expression had turned grim. She asked softly, “You Su, why do you have this pendant too? Did you also start working for the City Lord’s Mansion?”
“Junior Sister, what did that person say to you? Did he ask you to infuse your spiritual energy into it?”
“Yes, he said it was to test my cultivation level, so I infused my energy into it.”
You Su felt as if he had been struck by a bolt of lightning. His breathing became heavy as he asked another question, “Did Master’s Wife test it?”
“No, he was going to test her, but I told him that she doesn’t have any cultivation, so he gave up.”
“Did you notice any changes in the pendant after you injected your energy?”
“Yes, it got hotter and turned darker,” Ji Lingruo said, pinching her delicate chin as she recalled. “He told me that the higher the cultivation level, the hotter the pendant would get and the darker it would become.”
You Su felt like he was suffocating. It was now clear that the pendant was indeed an Evil Repelling Token. He had hidden his secret for so long, only to have it exposed by someone else.
He was frantic. No one in the city seemed capable of possessing an Evil Repelling Token, except for one person-City Lord Liu, who had obtained the token from Gu earlier that morning.
The Mandarin Duck Sword Sect was located in the most remote area of Chuyun City. The only reason a servant would come here with an Evil Repelling Token was that City Lord Liu had secretly ordered it!
Had City Lord Liu already figured out the problem with Junior Sister and Master’s Wife?
“You Su, what exactly is this pendant for?” Ji Lingruo asked curiously.
“Junior Sister, did the servant say who sent him?” Every piece of information was crucial, and You Su needed to know everything.
“He said that he was sent by City Lord Qi. So the old man who helped us earlier is named Qi?”
!!!
City Lord Qi? It wasn’t City Lord Liu who was the first to notice, but Qi Daodong?
You Su’s mind was in chaos. He couldn’t figure out where he had slipped up to alert Qi Daodong. Qi Daodong had never even visited the Mandarin Duck Sword Sect, so how could he have discovered anything?
It made sense that City Lord Liu would pass the Evil Repelling Token to the next city lord before leaving, but why had Qi Daodong come to test Junior Sister immediately after receiving it? Was this his own idea, or had City Lord Liu instructed him to do so?
You Su was filled with regret. Why had he cared about those people’s lives? He should have returned to the sect immediately and stayed by the side of Junior Sister and Master’s Wife.
His fists clenched so tightly that the nails dug into his palms. The surrounding mist swirled, and a deep sense of defeat mixed with anger surged within him.
Ji Lingruo noticed the change in You Su’s demeanor and asked worriedly, “You Su, what’s going on?”
You Su looked up, placing his hands on Ji Lingruo’s shoulders and solemnly said, “Junior Sister, listen to me. Pack your things. We’re leaving here!”
“Huh? So suddenly? There’s so much fog outside…” Ji Lingruo looked confused.
“We’re not leaving town. We have to find a place to hide inside the city. The Mandarin Duck Sword Sect is no longer safe!”
You Su’s voice was urgent, and his grip on Ji Lingruo’s shoulders tightened unconsciously.
“There is no time to explain. Go pack your things. I’ll go get Master’s wife!”
“Oh…”
Ji Lingruo winced from the pain in her shoulders but obediently did as she was told. Although she often liked to oppose You Su, his demeanor made it clear that this was an emergency and she couldn’t afford to be stubborn.
Suddenly, a violent gust of wind blew through, dispersing much of the thick fog in the courtyard.
The sound of countless footsteps echoed as dozens of figures emerged from the fog outside the courtyard. Each of them wore expressions of anger and murderous intent, glaring at the gate of the Mandarin Duck Sword Sect.
At the forefront was none other than Qi Daodong!
He retracted his right hand, which had just cast a powerful wind spell, and shouted, “You Su! You’ve been harboring evil spirits and plotting against us! Surrender now!”
Each word felt like a thousand-pound boulder pressing down on You Su, making it hard for him to breathe. You Su was filled with despair. He hadn’t expected them to arrive so quickly!
Ji Lingruo was even more confused and scared. With a pale face, she asked in a trembling voice, “You Su, what are they talking about?”
You Su took a deep breath and said to Ji Lingruo, “Junior Sister, don’t be afraid. Go back to your room. I’ll drive them away.”
“No!”
Ji Lingruo’s delicate eyebrows furrowed in anger. Although she didn’t understand what was happening, she could sense the hostility from the people outside. She couldn’t accept just hiding behind her senior brother.
You Su gave her a reassuring smile and said gently, “Listen to me one last time. Go back to your room.”
Ji Lingruo hesitated, but the firmness in You Su’s voice made her comply.
At that moment, the gate was kicked open with a loud crash. Qi Daodong led the crowd inside, each of them looking fierce and menacing. With the thin mist still lingering, they resembled vengeful ghosts emerging from the mist.
Ji Lingruo was startled by their appearance, but it only strengthened her resolve to stand by You Su’s side.
Seeing her determination, You Su didn’t say anything more. He raised his voice and called out to Qi Daodong, “Sect Leader Qi, what is the meaning of this?”
Qi Daodong sneered, his sharp eyes narrowing like a hawk’s. “You Su, you’ve hidden yourself well…”
“Sect Leader Qi, I don’t understand what you’re talking about. Maybe there’s a misunderstanding.”
You Su tried to keep his voice calm. If possible, he really didn’t want to fight these people, even though he knew that words alone might not be enough to calm them down.
“A misunderstanding? What misunderstanding could I have with someone who colludes with evil spirits?” Qi Daodong roared.
Another figure stepped forward from Qi Daodong’s side. It was Wu Cheng, his handsome face filled with regret. He sighed and said, “You Su, just surrender. I don’t think you’re someone who would ally with evil spirits.”
“Brother! Why waste words on him? No wonder he didn’t let us search the house that day – he really was hiding evil spirits! This fog and the evil spirit outside the city must be connected to his sect!”
A thin figure emerged from the crowd, holding a shining sword. His face was twisted with rage. It was none other than Wu Ping.
