Chapter 41: Ch 41 : The Stars Returning to the Sky
The atmosphere in the Fairy Tail camp was extremely unusual.
Natsu and Gray, both covered in bandages, were glaring at each other.
"What happened to them?" Elfman asked Mirajane as he looked at the two.
"They got injured during a job… because of a pillow fight." Mirajane replied with a cheerful smile, glancing at the two who were at each other's throats.
"How do you even get hurt that badly from throwing pillows?" Elfman asked, exasperated.
"Why the hell did you get so serious over a pillow fight?!" Gray growled at Natsu.
"I always go all out, no matter what!" Natsu shot back, unfazed.
"Even so, didn't you lose in the end?"
"What did you just say?! You were the one who lost!"
"Lucy, tell him! I was the winner, right?" Both of them turned towards Lucy, who was sitting at the bar.
"Shut up!" Lucy snapped, exuding an intimidating aura as if Erza had possessed her.
Cold sweat ran down both Natsu and Gray's faces as they immediately panicked and apologized.
"Amazing. Other than Erza, I never thought anyone could make those two shut up." Mirajane remarked in surprise.
"A true… man among men."
Amidst the usual chaos of Fairy Tail, no one noticed a figure watching them from the shadows—a young man with dark golden hair, dressed in a green jacket.
His handsome face, however, was filled with exhaustion and weakness.
"Loke."
A voice suddenly called out from behind him, making the young man in the green jacket turn around hurriedly.
Standing there was another young man with light golden hair, clad in a white coat, his face refined and elegant.
"Is that you, Noel? You almost scared me." Loke gave a wry smile as he looked at Noel.
However, Noel didn't respond to Loke's words.
Instead, he grabbed Loke's arm, his expression turning grim as he watched Loke's hand momentarily become translucent. "So… it's finally come to this, huh?"
A bitter smile appeared on Loke's lips. "Yeah… I guess I only have a few days left."
In Fairy Tail, Noel had worked with many members, and Loke was one of them.
During a mission they completed together two years ago, Noel had accidentally discovered Loke's true identity.
After repeatedly questioning him, Loke finally admitted that he was actually a Celestial Spirit.
Since then, Noel had used his magic to help Loke maintain his physical form as much as possible.
However, Noel's magic was not from the Celestial Spirit Realm, so being able to support Loke for this long was already remarkable.
Taking a deep breath, Noel looked at Loke seriously. "Go find Lucy. As a Celestial Spirit Mage, she might be able to help you. This is your only chance."
Loke shook his head. "Forget it. I don't want to drag her into this. This is the fate I deserve… I broke my contract… Noel, thank you for these past two years. If it weren't for your help, I wouldn't have been able to hold on for this long."
With that, Loke pulled his hand away and turned to leave.
Noel opened his mouth as if to say something, but in the end, he only let out a silent sigh.
He could only watch Loke's retreating figure.
Noel was the last person in the world qualified to convince Loke otherwise—because he was just like Loke.
In fact, the sins and despair he carried were far heavier.
Much, much heavier.
-------------
The night sky was filled with countless shimmering stars.
A tall and slender figure stood on a cliff surrounded by waterfalls, gazing at a lone tombstone atop the cliff.
Loke leaned against the tombstone, looking up at the starry sky. "Karen, I've come to keep you company."
"Loke."
A sudden female voice called out to him.
Loke turned toward the source of the voice—it was Lucy.
"Everyone's been looking for you," she said.
"Lucy." Loke murmured in surprise.
"That's… Karen's grave, isn't it? The Celestial Spirit Mage Karen… she was your owner, right?" Lucy spoke without regard for the drastic change in Loke's expression. "Celestial Spirit Loke… no, your real name is Leo of the Lion."
"I'm surprised you figured out I'm a Celestial Spirit." Leo replied helplessly.
"I'm a Celestial Spirit Mage who has contracts with many spirits, so I discovered your truth… though I should've realized it much earlier. Normally, when a Celestial Spirit Mage dies, their contract is broken, and the spirit is forcibly returned to the Celestial Spirit World until a new owner appears. After Karen's death, your contract should have been lifted… but you're still here in the human world. There must be some reason preventing you from going back. Just like how humans can't survive in the Celestial Spirit World, spirits can't survive in the human world either—their life force is gradually stripped away until they eventually die…"
"It's been three years." Loke said with a bitter smile.
"Th-Three years? Even lasting one year should be impossible!" Lucy exclaimed in shock.
"Yeah… even with Noel's help, I've already reached my limit. I can't use my power anymore." Loke said indifferently.
"Maybe I can save you. Tell me why you can't return, and I'll open the gate for you."
"I don't want your help."
"What are you saying? If this continues, you're really going to die."
"The reason I can't return is simple… I broke the ultimate taboo between a Celestial Spirit and their mage. As a result… I was permanently exiled from the Celestial Spirit World."
"Permanently exiled?"
"This is my punishment. I'm willing to accept the death that is approaching me… I am a traitorous spirit, the one who personally… killed my own master, Karen." Loke's voice was filled with indescribable bitterness as he confessed his past to Lucy.
-----------------
Noel stood at the edge of the cliff, gazing from a distance at the conversation between the Celestial Spirit King and Lucy, as well as the moment when Loke—no, Leo—finally found his salvation.
"Congratulations, Loke." Noel watched the scene unfold, the corners of his lips curling into a faint smile.
However, that smile quickly faded into one of melancholy. "You're different from me, Loke… You had someone who could save you… But I…"
As the Celestial Spirit King was about to disappear, Noel released a faint trace of his presence before turning away.
He knew the Celestial Spirit King would follow.
There were things they both needed to confirm.
Deep within a forest, the Celestial Spirit King, following the lingering traces of Noel's presence, arrived and stood face to face with him.
"I never expected to see an existence like you in this era," the Celestial Spirit King spoke first, his tone filled with astonishment. "How should I address you? The new King of Light?"
"Just call me Noel, Celestial Spirit King." Noel looked at the ruler of the Celestial Spirit World, the corners of his mouth curving into a smile both bitter and mocking. "That title brings back too many memories… I am merely the result of those who defied the forbidden."
"The forbidden…" The Celestial Spirit King repeated the words thoughtfully.
"I didn't call you here for pleasantries, Celestial Spirit King. There are things I need to ask you." Noel said.
"It would be my honor, Sir Noel." The Celestial Spirit King placed his right hand over his chest and responded with a respectful bow.
