Chapter 31: The World Learns
Hours after the beta players of SWTOR had begun playing, a revolution of awareness was witnessed across the internet. Walls that were once erected to stop the proliferation of the God Empress's games were crumbling amidst the unending swarms of people that tuned in on the streams or simply talked about it.
Previous trailer included, this beta-play was drawing attention in the millions... The tens of millions. Kids began contacting their friends to see if they wanted to buy the game when it came out. Teenagers started calling their managers to see if they could get more hours at work... Adults, in some cases, began selling excess property or portfolios. All in the rush to get enough money to play this game; which they assumed would be very expensive due to the reality-like quality it had.
This wasn't just a game, to some, it was a chance of having influence and power in another world that was separated from their current mediocre existence. A possibility to shed themselves of the mundane and join the ranks of the rich.
Of course... Many of the 'rich' and 'wealthy' were also looking at this new world with greed...
Somewhere...
"Father, this new game being spoken about since an hour or two ago... Do you think we should invest time and money into it?"
A sultry feminine voice called out from behind a rice-paper wall, the shadowy outline of a meditating man flickering amidst candlelight behind said wall. The atmosphere was, tense, a delicate wind whispering through the house adding to the chills that slowly crept up the back of the woman's neck.
"Mm. Does my daughter grasp the value fully?" She coughed lightly.
"I do father."
Flame lit shadows moved on the other side of the garden courtyard, guards moving around amidst the conversation. This served as a perfect distraction for the woman as a pause was sustained.
"Value... If valuable it is, perhaps, autonomy shall be given. Convince me."
"Father, this venture is unlike anything else seen before. The game I speak of is not just an attempt to further the breads and circuses of the masses... No, it seems to be blessed with technology far exceeding our own. Producing a world that looks akin to our own reality, but set in different times and places."
The meditating figure moved methodically behind the wall as he picked up a small bowl, bringing it to, presumably, where his mouth was. A small dunking noise resounded as a nearby Japanese water-fountain overflowed temporarily.
"And, this world... Does it provide, power? Is it, an investment plan? Benefits are important."
The woman lightly ran her fingers through the strands of hair falling gracefully over her somewhat delicate ears.
"I believe, from my time watching it, that it could be a second world to our own. A place where power may be grown and influence may be reached. Whilst not understood fully, it is very possible that this game could provide the basis for exchanges of money and real-estate. Digital real-estate could become real. Influence could be gained so long as we play our cards right."
"Political, then? Intriguing. Real-estate whilst, uncouth, would be of import to expansion of your efforts. The, security, of this venture is questionable. However, that does not make it worthless... Risks are required. What would be your, outcome? Should you succeed."
The bowl lowered down to the ground as a sword-like shadow slowly lifted from the ground and was manoeuvred around to his side, disappearing into the amalgam of shadow that was created from the grass of the courtyard.
She stayed silent for a few moments, taking in the movements of her father. Thinking on the answer to his questions. He was nothing if poignant with them, and quick answers were never taken well.
"I would wish to gain an understanding of this technology, more aptly, gain a connection to the one who would produce such revolutionary work. That is the short term. Long term I would wish to gain control or possibly weave this technology into our own, bosoms."
A hearty masculine chuckle echoed cavernously through the courtyard, only minutely muffled by the rice-paper walls. This was good, she had amused her father... Much better than the alternative.
"Heh. Very well then. The league shall give you the manpower of one hundred men. Failure is, allowed, but disapproved... Should you not succeed in your endeavours, it would, displease me immensely, daughter. However, If you are to come back triumphant, then the pools will be open to you, for an entire year."
Her eyes widened drastically as her heart started to beat deeper, more excitedly. The pools were no joke, no trifle of a prize... Access for an entire year would ensure decades of near pristine life-span, more. Eyes that were widened narrowed venomously as her lips were subconsciously licked in anticipation.
She gathered herself and responded with extreme manners. "Yes father, it will be done."
"I have zero doubt, in your capabilities daughter. Perhaps, you may even find the husband that I have been looking for..."
Her expression became extremely measured and controlled, the man in the courtyard standing slowly with his sword in hand. A top knot could be seen now, gracing a rather intricate looking shadow of a ribbon. He walked away, his back facing towards her seated position as clacking of rice-paper wall followed soon after... He had left the courtyard.
"Failure, is not an option, I must secure the year."
...
At this moment, the purchases for Fallout skyrocketed into the tens of millions. The media was airing content about the games of Yggdrasil Interactive and its CEO God Empress. Mysteriousness was a key intrigue to these stations as politicians, businessmen, royals, demagogues and dictators all called for the immediate retrieval of the God Empress.
It was chaos. Hours had only passed and people were in a frenzy... Most for the game that had already been released, but additionally, the far-spanning consequences this technology could have on Humanity in general. Both sides of the political spectrums in America and the West were trying to use it as a tool for their own power plays and 'games'.
Common people though, were mostly excited, enthralled by the promise of a different world where they needn't be the trodden upon. Where they could truly work themselves up to a point where they could be satisfied. Naturally, these were desperate or bored interpretations as food, water and housing would always be necessary to play these games... But thus was the nature of Humanity.
And there I sat, just awoken from my venture inside of SWTOR... Points flushing into my system as if it were the basin for the entire hopes and dreams of America and the world.
[Points: 215,213,069]
Words couldn't describe my state currently. Thus I entered into an immediate panic attack. My points had risen exponentially in just hours of the dam breaking. The entire Western world was exposed to Fallout... Let alone the eastern nations and middle east.
My point were still increasing monolithically. [Points: 276,224,110] . Nothing seemed to be stopping the amounts coming in. And beyond even the purchasing statistics, there were the gameplay points. I had hit the upwards curve and it didn't look like it was even close to stopping.
I began huffing in effort as the pressure and weight of what I had achieved finally struck me. More than any of the heroes in my last life, I had made something helpful, useful, enjoyable... And people were liking it. Points was secondary for me at this point, the implications of the power that was at my fingertips finally solidified into me...
Picard was correct to question the power that I had to bring people to me and serve me. Power was responsibility and in the wrong hands could cause catastrophe. With so many points, so much influence, I could do whatever I wanted in a way... And it scared me more than anything else as very little could currently tie me down to reality.
I paced around the room for a few minutes, trying to burn off the adrenaline that insisted on pumping itself into my brain and body. Ideas coagulated to the surface of my mind constantly. Visions of power and grandeur, owning palaces and entire countries... But it sat wrong with me. My focus was to provide entertainment to people, to allow them to enjoy their lives... It was a goal foisted upon me at first, but I had come to enjoy the process, the jokes, the fans.
My gut churned and my mind swivelled in a different direction.
'Creating events and cool storylines within the games... Making gatherings in real life for fans. Creating toys, tools and gadgets in real life for children and players alike... Spreading the joy of my work to everyone... Should that be my use of the power I have?'
No one answered, but I didn't need someone else, I had found my direction. Yggdrasil Interactive would be for the people! Not against them. Not self-interested. Simply there to entertain people and bring joy to their lives, no matter who or what they were.
////
Author Note: The end bit is to fully show that she is still Human and has issues like we do... My intent was to humanise her and to give an understanding that she is struggling with the newfound power and wealth she has; like most of us would have if we were to suddenly gain 'everything' at the tips of our fingers.
