Chapter 8: Chapter 8
With a gentle leap, Lumine's hidden Wind Glider snapped open.
The wind carried her body as she glided along the route Amber had planned.
Using the Wind Glider, Lumine curiously observed the scenery slowly receding in her vision. It felt magical, as if everything and everyone were moving backward.
Famas, however, could sense that the wind was growing increasingly erratic. The chaotic trend was becoming more pronounced, as if something was about to happen.
"Is it Dvalin?"
Famas began to brace himself.
No, more accurately, he was preparing to hide.
The sky, which had been half-blue just a moment ago, suddenly darkened. The wind gathered in an instant, forming a fierce storm.
The storm churned, wreaking havoc on everything in Mondstadt.
"What's happening?"
"Paimon! Hold onto me!"
Before Lumine could finish speaking, Paimon had already closed her eyes and clung to her tightly.
"War's Protection."
Famas, still wrapped around Lumine's arm, suddenly conjured a red hexagonal shield, completely enveloping Lumine and Paimon. Not a single gust of the chaotic wind could penetrate it.
"Wow! Famas, you can do this too?"
Feeling her body stabilize, Paimon opened her eyes and saw Famas extending his tiny hands, struggling to maintain the Pyro shield.
"It's only temporary. Lumine, retract the Wind Glider and prepare to descend."
Famas was barely holding on, his small Pyro shield cracking under the pressure. The power of Dvalin, the Dragon of the East, had only grown stronger over the centuries. It seemed that the poison of Durin had not only driven Dvalin into madness but also enhanced his strength.
"If it were a thousand years ago, not just Dvalin, even Durin would've had his feathers plucked by me."
Famas muttered to himself.
"Barbatos, do something useful for once. If you don't step in soon, I really won't be able to hold on."
Crack.
A fissure appeared in the crimson shield.
"We're doomed."
This thought crossed the minds of all three. Lumine was doing her best to control the Wind Glider, but the fierce winds made it hard for her to see the ground below.
"I can't hold on."
The shield shattered in an instant, releasing a burst of Pyro energy that sent the trio soaring higher into the sky.
Lumine clung tightly to Paimon, struggling to control the Wind Glider and the Anemo energy within her, trying to stabilize herself in the air.
But Lumine couldn't fully control the Anemo energy or the Wind Glider yet. She was rapidly falling toward the ground.
Suddenly, a completely different kind of wind caught her.
Unlike the previous wind, this wind was gentle, like soft cotton.
"May the wind be with you."
A voice echoed in Lumine's ears, and Paimon and Famas heard it too.
"Finally, you show up, Barbatos."
Famas breathed a sigh of relief. He had just released a Pyro shield, and if Venti could see it, he would easily recognize Famas.
The gentle wind carried Lumine as the silhouette of Dvalin appeared through the clouds.
"It is I who have summoned the thousand-year winds to aid you, so you will not fall… Now, attack the purple crystal on Dvalin's back."
The unfamiliar voice spoke again in Lumine's ear.
Lumine didn't want to think about who this voice belonged to. She decided to follow its instructions.
For now, this was the only way to stop the disaster.
"Gust Surge!"
Lumine shouted, launching a compressed Anemo energy blast toward the purple crystal on Dvalin's back.
Bang, bang, bang.
After taking several hits, Dvalin let out a furious roar. The winds around him grew even more, and he thrashed his body, trying to evade Lumine's attacks.
Fortunately, with the help of Venti, the Anemo Archon, the winds quickly stabilized. Lumine seized the opportunity to continue attacking Dvalin's back.
Dvalin noticed Venti's intervention and turned his head, roaring at Lumine. In an instant, the wind swirled like a storm, engulfing everything in its path.
"War's Protection."
A deep red glow reappeared, shielding the group once more.
Finally, the wind began to calm, though the sky remained dark.
Dvalin was nowhere to be seen, but the storm he had created still raged over Mondstadt, though it was much weaker than before.
As soon as Lumine landed, she saw a fiery red figure rushing toward her—it was Amber.
"Are you okay? Lumine, you actually fought the Stormterror!"
"Someone helped us."
Lumine glanced at Famas on her wrist, then looked up at the sky.
"Huh? Someone helped you? Ah! It must have been the great Lord Barbatos! Though he hasn't appeared in Mondstadt for a long time."
Amber looked up at the sky with admiration and longing.
The people of Mondstadt believed in the wind and yearned for it.
"To possess the power to battle a dragon… Are you our guest… or a new storm?"
As the two girls gazed at the sky, a figure in deep blue flashed by. His skin was tanned, and his indigo hair was streaked with silver. A long strand of hair hung down the left side of his head, and two uneven cowlicks stuck up on top. A short sword hung at his waist.
"Kaeya, Lumine, you've arrived just in time. Let's hurry to the Knights of Favonius headquarters…"
Amber snapped out of her reverie and quickly pulled Lumine along, ready to head to the Knights' headquarters.
"Wait, Amber, shouldn't we introduce everyone first?"
"Ah, right. This is Kaeya, the Cavalry Captain of the Knights of Favonius. These two are travelers from afar, Lumine and Paimon, and this is Famas, a Pyro Slime."
Amber introduced everyone to Kaeya.
"Wait, a Pyro Slime?!"
Kaeya, who had been nodding along as he listened to the introductions, suddenly froze at the mention of Famas, his eyes narrowing.
"Famas is a good Slime! He even used a Pyro shield to protect us during the storm!"
Seeing the dangerous look in Kaeya's eyes, Paimon immediately stepped forward, using her soft, cute voice to defend Famas.
Kaeya stared at Famas for a long moment before finally nodding.
"Alright, if that's the case, he can come with us to the Knights' headquarters."
Famas was about to protest, wanting to leave the group and head to the Cat's Tail Tavern to find Venti.
He had sensed the gentle breeze earlier, likely a signal from Venti, who must have known Famas had arrived in Mondstadt.
However, seeing the dangerous look in Kaeya's eyes, Famas realized that, as a "monster," he couldn't move freely in Mondstadt just yet. Venti would have to wait.
"Barbatos, I'm really not a pigeon."
Famas almost couldn't help but let out a long sigh.
