Chapter 16: Chapter 16: The Infant Form of Rayquaza
"Huh? When did grass start growing in here?"
Chef Mao, who was cooking for Hu Tao, suddenly noticed a few blades of grass growing on the floor of the restaurant.
"Oh well, maybe I haven't cleaned in a while. I'll give it a good sweep after tonight's work."
He didn't pay much attention to it and quickly forgot about it.
...
After finishing her meal, Hu Tao wandered around Chihu Rock, looking for the location of Pokémon Home. To be honest, she really liked Xiangling's little monkey.
She wasn't sure if Pokémon Home only sold that one type of pet or if there were other kinds.
It didn't take long for her to find the shop with the sign that read "Pokémon Home." Next to the shop was a painting of a white, unfamiliar quadrupedal creature.
"Is that… a horse? Or a sheep? Why does it look so strange?"
Although she was curious about the strange white creature next to the shop, Hu Tao didn't feel the need to dig deeper. She simply walked into the shop.
As the Director of the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor and someone who walked the boundary between life and death, Hu Tao wasn't particularly interested in secrets. Sometimes, knowing too much wasn't a good thing.
Pushing open the shop door, Hu Tao immediately saw a yellow, humanoid creature floating on a cloud, darting around the shop with a feather duster, cleaning the corners.
"You are…"
Hu Tao wasn't sure what this thing was.
As someone who walked the boundary between life and death, she had seen all sorts of strange creatures, but she was certain she had never seen anything like this before.
At that moment, the yellow humanoid creature turned around.
It had a cloud-like beard on its face, giving it the appearance of a dignified yet kind old man.
"Oh, a customer! I'm Landorus. Please wait a moment. I'll go get the boss."
Landorus landed on the ground, put away the feather duster, and walked into the back of the shop.
Watching Landorus's retreating figure, Hu Tao frowned, her small hand resting on her chin. "No elemental energy, but it can speak. What is this?"
The Wangsheng Funeral Parlor had a long history, dating back to the Archon War.
Her ancestors had even worked alongside the Geo Archon.
For the Director of the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor, sensing elemental energy was second nature.
In Liyue, talking animals weren't uncommon.
Most of the adepti took such forms.
But just now, she hadn't sensed any elemental energy from Landorus, which was very strange.
"Is it the same kind of creature as Xiangling's little monkey?"
Hu Tao's eyes sparkled as she thought of Xiangling's Grookey.
She vaguely remembered seeing grass rapidly growing under the little monkey's feet.
At the time, she thought it was just a hallucination from being too hungry. But now, it seemed that might not have been the case.
Not long after Landorus went into the back of the shop, a tall young man slowly walked out. Landorus floated behind him, arms crossed.
"Welcome, customer. Are you here to buy a Pokémon?"
"Boss, what's a Pokémon? Is Xiangling's little monkey a Pokémon?"
Hu Tao directly asked the biggest question she had since entering the shop.
Li Pan smiled lightly. He finally understood how this Director Hu had found out about his shop.
"Of course. Chef Xiangling's Pokémon is called Grookey, a Grass-type Pokémon."
Hearing this, Hu Tao's confusion deepened.
"Grass-type? What does that mean?"
Li Pan pointed to Landorus beside him.
"Pokémon are currently divided into eighteen types and 905 species. Chef Xiangling's Grookey is a Grass-type, while my Landorus is a Ground and Flying-type Pokémon."
After hearing Li Pan's explanation, Hu Tao finally started to understand.
This piqued her interest.
Neither her years of experience walking the boundary nor the records of the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor had ever mentioned Pokémon. These creatures likely weren't native to Teyvat.
But what did that have to do with her? As long as they weren't a threat to Teyvat, it was fine.
"Boss, how do I buy a Pokémon? I don't see any other Pokémon in your shop."
Hu Tao craned her neck, looking around the shop, but she didn't see any Pokémon other than Landorus.
"Customer, you need to draw one from the Pokédex. Each person gets five draws per day. The first one is free, and each subsequent draw costs 1,000 Mora."
As he spoke, Li Pan handed the Pokédex to Hu Tao.
"Oh, I just click here to draw, right? Got it. My luck is the best in all of Teyvat. Watch me get the strongest Pokémon in one draw!"
With that, Hu Tao pressed the draw button.
Instantly, the images on the Pokédex began to spin, faster and faster, until they finally stopped on a green figure.
Looking at the Pokémon displayed on the Pokédex, Hu Tao's face was full of confusion. She tentatively looked at Li Pan.
"Boss… why does this Pokémon look so familiar? Don't you think it looks like… a cabbage worm?"
Li Pan leaned over to take a look and immediately twitched his lips.
Caterpie.
Well… this was the first Caterpie drawn since he opened the shop.
Everyone else had drawn Pokémon with base stats no lower than 500, and that lucky rich lady Ningguang had even drawn a Pseudo-Legendary.
"Customer, please don't underestimate this Pokémon. This Pokémon is the infant form of the legendary Sky Dragon, Rayquaza."
"Really?"
Hu Tao was pleasantly surprised. The Sky Dragon—just the name sounded impressive. She had heard that one of the Four Winds of Mondstadt was a dragon named Dvalin. If Rayquaza could grow to be as strong as Dvalin, that would be amazing. But why did this little guy look so much like a giant cabbage worm?
"Of course, that's not true. Customer, you're dreaming. This Pokémon is called Caterpie, and its final evolution is Butterfree. Its potential is… well, let's just say it's average. So, customer, do you want to buy it?"
Li Pan struggled to find the right words. He couldn't bring himself to lie and say Butterfree was strong.
For a moment, Hu Tao was stunned. The next moment, her fair cheeks turned bright red.
She reached into her pocket and pulled out a Northland Bank check, slapping it on the counter with her small hand adorned with rings on every finger.
Li Pan glanced at it—it was at least a six-figure sum.
"Boss, keep drawing!"
