Chapter 26: Chapter 26: The King of Goblins, Frightened
As Marsh walked down the narrow aisle, a foul stench hit him in the face. He couldn't help but cover his nose, grimacing at the unbearable odor.
The long passageway stretched for kilometers, and all the iron gates had been opened. Inside, the once ferocious wolves were now gone—completely wiped out. The passage was eerily empty.
At the end of the passage, a massive mine pit appeared before him. Its diameter was over a kilometer, and it was so dark that nothing could be seen within it. A spiraling passage descended into the pit, and numerous goblin monsters lined the way. They were armed with large swords and wore makeshift armor, patrolling in pairs.
[Elite Goblin Warrior (Enhanced Elite Monster)]
Level: 15
Power: 900
Agility: 800
Spirit: 400
Physique: 900
Compared to the Mine Wolf King, these goblins were significantly weaker, and none of their stats even broke the 1000 mark. Marsh wasn't concerned at all.
He waved his hand, and his skeleton army surged forward, charging into the mine. The goblins, though enhanced, were no match for the oncoming tide of skeleton warriors. One by one, they fell.
[Kill Level 15 Goblin Elite Warrior, Experience +4500]
[Obtain Animal Bones*6]
The notifications popped up rapidly as Marsh gave his skeleton warriors the order to fight freely, and they continued to mow down the goblins. Despite their enhanced status, these monsters dropped a high amount of experience and valuable materials.
Marsh couldn't help but think that the rewards were surprisingly high-quality. These enhanced elite monsters were much more rewarding compared to the regular creatures outside, offering a far better cost-benefit ratio.
"I'll have to remember this for the future," Marsh mused. "Soloing hell-level dungeons might just be a good idea."
Of course, if anyone had overheard his thoughts, they'd likely laugh it off. Soloing a hell-level dungeon was considered impossible in human history. While some great heroes had managed to conquer nightmare-level dungeons on their own, they were rare exceptions, and their feats were immortalized in the annals of history. Soloing hell-level dungeons was a fool's errand—those who tried never returned.
But for Marsh, the thought was more a passing curiosity. As he descended further into the mine, the monsters along the way were quickly cleared out, and he was nearing the bottom of the pit. At this point, his experience was already at 99%. Just one more kill, and he would level up.
"Only the final boss remains," Marsh thought. "Once I take it down, I'll hit level 12."
It had taken just over an hour to clear the dungeon, and in that time, Marsh had leveled up more than once—far more efficiently than he'd expected. If this was how fast he could level up in a nightmare difficulty dungeon, reaching level 16, 18, or even 19 in a few more runs didn't seem impossible.
With that, the thought of entering the prestigious Xiajing Academy seemed like a certainty.
"Sister, we'll meet soon," Marsh smiled to himself as he thought of his sister, Lin Mohan.
At the center of the mine, the massive goblin boss sat, its gigantic mouth continually sucking in air. The sound of its breath echoed like thunder through the cavernous space. Each inhale created a powerful gust of wind that was so strong it nearly knocked Marsh off his feet.
The goblin king seemed unaware of the chaos unfolding outside—it was simply asleep, deep in its own world, a state akin to being in the underworld.
Marsh used his detection skill, and the results appeared in a flash:
[King of Goblins (Leader Level Monster)]
Level: 16
Power: 3000
Agility: 1500
Spirit: 1500
Physique: 3000
Skills: Flame Jet, Sweep, Knockback
The goblin king's attributes were a considerable step up from the Mine Wolf King, with slightly higher strength and physique, though not overwhelmingly so. Marsh briefly wondered if his skeleton warriors could take it on one-on-one.
However, his detection skill had disturbed the goblin king's rest. Its eyes snapped open and locked onto Marsh, and with a mighty roar, it leapt into action.
The massive creature wielded a giant sword, its blade gleaming as it slashed toward Marsh's head.
The wind pressure from the sword was terrifying. But Marsh didn't flinch or step back. He remained calm, even with a hint of a smirk on his face.
The blade came down with immense force, but just as it was about to strike Marsh, it suddenly stopped. The blade hovered, only ten centimeters from Marsh's head. There was no visible obstruction—just an invisible force holding the sword in place.
Marsh knew immediately: Damage Transfer. All damage that he would have received was now transferred to his summoned creatures.
But something was wrong.
Marsh's calm demeanor faltered for a moment as he noticed that all his skeleton warriors were injured. Their soul fires flickered wildly, and their bodies had darkened. Fine cracks began to form along their skeletal limbs.
"What's happening?" Marsh thought, perplexed.
He had never encountered a situation like this. Even when the massive blade had come down, Marsh had remained composed, certain that his summoned creatures would take the damage. But now, the skeleton warriors were clearly suffering, and Marsh was uncertain why.
"How could this be?" he muttered to himself, frowning.
Normally, he had complete control over his summons. The transfer of damage should have been no issue. But this time, the injuries were far more severe than usual, and Marsh realized something was amiss.
He quickly retreated, signaling his skeleton warriors to protect him as they rushed forward to defend.
"Furious Blow!" Marsh commanded.
The skeleton warriors unleashed their devastating attacks, and their combined efforts pummeled the goblin king, causing massive damage. The goblin king roared in pain as it staggered backward, clearly reeling from the onslaught.
But as the goblin king turned to retaliate, Marsh took a moment to reflect. He realized what had gone wrong. The Damage Transfer effect was designed to transfer the damage Marsh received to his summoned creatures, but the scale of the attack had overwhelmed the system.
His own physical attributes were weak. With only 120 points of constitution, his defense was insufficient to absorb the blow from a creature as powerful as the goblin king. The transferred damage, therefore, was much greater than expected.
"If my own attributes were higher, my summons wouldn't have suffered so much," Marsh thought, now understanding the flaw in his strategy.
This revelation was a wake-up call. In the future, I need to focus on improving my physique. The stronger his defenses, the stronger his summoned army would be.
Marsh smiled. It seemed his journey wasn't just about summoning powerful creatures—it was about building his own strength as well. Only by becoming stronger could his summons reach their full potential.
"Looks like I have a new goal," Marsh murmured, his resolve strengthening. "Time to work on my defense."
