Chapter 12: Chapter 12 : Practice Match
Under the influence of his teammates and opponents, Asahi Azumane gradually regained his form.
"Sugawara, one more ball!"
When his spikes were blocked, he no longer thought of retreating. Instead, he faced the challenge head-on with determination.
Unlike Akira, who can execute high-speed Spikes that are nearly impossible to block, Asahi relies on raw power.
His strong physique gives him an incredible smashing force, making him a formidable power-type Spiker.
Power Spikers like Asahi are some of the hardest to stop if your physical endurance isn't up to par.
Even if you predict the trajectory of his spike, without sufficient strength, blocking him is futile.
However, power players can fall into a dilemma when faced with blockers strong enough to withstand their attacks.
It was like Karasuno's infamous match against Date Tech in the past—when Asahi couldn't break through their formidable wall, his scoring opportunities diminished.
Now, Asahi found himself in a similar situation. Aside from Akira and Daichi Sawamura, the others weren't strong enough to consistently block Asahi's spikes.
This allowed Asahi to rack up points at the beginning of the game.
But soon, Akira figured out Asahi's patterns. In the following rallies, Akira was always ready in front of Asahi, neutralizing his attacks.
On the sidelines, Kageyama Tobio watched in awe, a cold sweat forming on his brow.
"This guy… He's always so composed,"
Kageyama thought.
"Every time, he finds the opponent's weaknesses so quickly! Facing him always feels like walking on thin ice!"
As the match progressed, the game reached a tense stalemate. Both sides fought tooth and nail for each point.
Among the standouts, Nishinoya Yuu's performance was particularly dazzling.
True to his title as Karasuno's "Guardian Deity," Nishinoya's defensive prowess was unmatched.
His ability to protect against spikes, including Asahi's powerful attacks, left everyone speechless.
"A Spike traveling at over 100 kilometers per hour and landing within two meters!" someone remarked.
"Nishinoya manages to save those balls repeatedly!"
Even Ukai Keishin, observing from the sidelines, couldn't help but praise him.
As the match neared its climax, Karasuno's opponents—Karasuno Neighborhood Team—showed their experience and skills.
On one serve, Hinata Shoyo struggled to handle the ball. The Opponent serve fell right in front of him, putting Karasuno in a tough spot. Just as panic set in, Daichi rushed in to save the ball at the last second.
"Nice save, Daichi!"
Now, the ball was in play, and Akira was in the front row, ready for a spike. All six members of the opposing team braced themselves.
The three blockers up front focused entirely on Akira, while the defenders in the back row zeroed in on his position.
But Kageyama noticed something subtle—a small hand gesture from Akira before the play began. It was a secret signal they had discussed days ago.
"This guy… I'll trust you this time," Kageyama thought, gritting his teeth.
As Akira leaped for the spike, Kageyama executed a quick back pass. The ball flew to Tanaka Ryunosuke, who was in the secondary attack position.
The unexpected move caught everyone off guard. All the blockers were focused on Akira, leaving Tanaka with an open net.
"O-Open ?!" Nishinoya's expression turned grim.
"Long time no see!" Tanaka shouted gleefully as he spiked the ball.
The blockers scrambled to recover, but it was too late. Kageyama's quick attack had outmaneuvered everyone.
Bang!
The ball hit the floor, and Karasuno tied the score.
On the sidelines, Takeda Ittetsu looked nervous. "Kageyama took such a big risk!" he said.
"Passing to Tanaka instead of Akira at such a critical point? If we lost that rally, the first set would've been over!"
Keishin, however, shook his head. "That wasn't just Kageyama's risk-taking," he said with a knowing smile.
"That was planned."
----------
In fact, Akira's purpose in letting Kageyama do this was simply to reduce risks.
Through the previous dozens of rounds of competition, Akira had already attracted the attention of everyone on the other side. Now they all knew how easy it was for him to score with his Spikes.
So, at this crucial moment of the match point, everyone thought that Kageyama would pass the ball to the main Spiker with a super high scoring percentage.
And not to Tanaka, who was in the secondary offensive position! In this way, when Tanaka Spiked the ball, no one reacted in time!
Making it easy for Tanaka to score!
On the contrary, if Akira had Spiked the ball himself...He would have had to face the attention of all six players on the other side!
The opposing team was full of extremely experienced players, including Sugawara and Asahi, who were third-year students.
What made Akira feel the most threatened was Nishinoya; his stable catching ability was exceptional!
This had already been proven in the game! Even Akira's Spikes wasn't a guaranteed score—Nishinoya had successfully received several of his Spikes!
Thus, giving the ball to Tanaka for the Spiking wasn't as risky as Takeda thought.
Instead, it was the least risky move!At critical moments like these, Akira always made the clearest decisions. Now, the score between the two teams was tied at 24 points!
Serve rotation again!
And this time, it was Akira's turn to serve from the back row!
"When I'm in the back row, it's harder to score," Akira thought.
"In that case, let's end the game right here!"
Akira said to himself.
He threw the ball high into the air outside the bounds!
Leaping into the air, he struck the ball with full force.
Slam!
The powerful serve shot toward the opposing team's back row!
Before anyone could react—direct serve score!!
"How is it... so fast??" Nishinoya said, stunned.
The ball just now was far faster than Akira's usual Spiking speed!
He barely had time to react before the ball hit the ground.
"It's even stronger than Oikawa's serves!"
"When did Akira secretly practice jump serves? Why haven't I ever seen him use one before?" Daichi asked, still in shock.
"Yeah! That serve... was so cool!" Hinata shouted, equally amazed.
"Haha! I practiced it back in junior high, but no one ever noticed," Akira replied.
"Hmph! It's not surprising for someone as sneaky as him to have a hidden trick!" Kageyama added, but quickly shut up under Akira's piercing gaze.
Kageyama couldn't help but feel a tinge of sadness.
The jump serve he'd worked so hard to perfect wasn't even close to the power Akira had just displayed.
"What else is this guy good at?" Kageyama muttered bitterly.
Once, Kageyama had considered himself a genius.Back in Kitagawa Daiichi, even Oikawa admitted that Kageyama's talent surpassed his own.
But after meeting Akira...
Kageyama couldn't help but feel inadequate.
"Stay focused! Get the next ball!"
The opposing team grew tense. With Karasuno now at match point, if they didn't handle this serve, they'd lose the set.
Nishinoya gritted his teeth, his eyes locked on Akira. It was clear he was trying to anticipate where the next serve would land.
Akira, however, remained calm. After scanning the opposing team's defensive setup, he moved decisively!
Another jump serve!
This time, he aimed for a corner inside the opponent's boundary!
"It's going there!!"
"Is it out or inside the boundary??"
"This ball is so high! It might go out of bounds!"
Nishinoya had only a moment to decide.
If Akira's serve was out, not receiving it would tie the score.
Nishinoya gritted his teeth.
"Take a gamble!"
Having faced countless split-second judgments in his career, Nishinoya trusted his experience. He decided not to go for the ball.
But as the ball slammed into the floor, the linesman raised the red flag, signaling in-bounds!
Bang!
"What... How could that be?!" Nishinoya exclaimed, stunned.
The ball was inside the boundary!
As a libero, judging whether a ball was out was a fundamental skill. Yet, at such a crucial moment, Nishinoya had miscalculated! This point directly cost his team the set!
He stared in disbelief at the boundary line where the ball had landed.
"How did you do it?! How could that ball land inbounds?!"
The rest of the team was equally confused.
Everyone on their side had years of experience and had come to the same conclusion.
That ball should've gone out!
None of them could understand how Akira had made the impossible possible.
Akira, standing calmly on the other side of the net, smirked.
