Chapter 460: Chapter 460: Lor'themar's Provocation
Before Alleria could respond, a male elf beside her voiced his discontent.
It was none other than Lor'themar Theron who spoke.
"Don't you feel any shame?"
Alaric didn't reply but instead cast a cold gaze at him.
Though Lor'themar would achieve great things in the future, in Alaric's eyes, his current self was insignificant.
Even if Lor'themar were to become the ruler of the Blood Elves, it would only be due to the absence of true leaders.
If Kael'thas hadn't strayed from his path, and if Alleria and Sylvanas were still present, the position of regent wouldn't have been Lor'themar's to claim.
Ignoring Alaric's gaze, Lor'themar reiterated his words.
"Are all humans like this? Devoid of real skill, relying solely on cunning and eloquence to deceive others into helping them. First, Sylvanas, and now Alleria. Don't you feel any shame?"
"Shut up, Lor'themar!" Alleria snapped before Alaric could say a word. "You have no right to insult my brother like that."
"Are you questioning my judgment, Lor'themar?" Sylvanas added coldly. She was now icy and ruthless, a stark contrast to the mischievous, chaos-loving sister she used to be.
Faced with the rebuke of both commanders, Lor'themar's face flushed with frustration, but loyal as he was, he reluctantly stepped back.
However, before he could retreat fully, Alaric stopped the Windrunner sisters.
"Thank you, but there's no need to speak on my behalf," he said calmly. "Let me handle this. I'll make them accept me willingly."
The Windrunner sisters, who had been ready to lash out further, found their anger extinguished by Alaric's composed words.
They were taken aback by his demeanor and tone. Beneath his calm facade, they sensed a storm brewing.
"Let's see what he'll do," they thought, stepping aside with unspoken agreement, casting sympathetic glances at their subordinates.
Having witnessed Alaric's exploits in the Silvermoon Council, they knew well what this man was capable of.
The once-proud and obstinate elven lords had bent to his designs, overturning their initial decisions to align with his plans.
A man with such strategic brilliance was neither simple nor reckless.
Now that he had declared he would "make them accept him willingly," the sisters were certain he had already prepared his next move. Their rash subordinates were likely in for some hard lessons.
Alaric stepped forward and swept a stern gaze over the rangers.
Bound by the authority of their commanders, the rangers remained silent, but Alaric could see the disdain and resentment in most of their eyes.
Finally, Alaric turned to Lor'themar.
"You said humans rely only on cunning and eloquence to deceive others. Tell me, how many humans have you met?
How many have you interacted with deeply? On what basis did you draw this conclusion?"
Lor'themar remained silent, his gaze shifting to Alleria instead.
"Why are you looking at me? Now you want to follow my orders? He asked you a question—answer him!" Alleria demanded.
Given her approval, Lor'themar finally spoke his mind.
"You're right—I haven't met many humans. But that doesn't mean I don't understand them. On the contrary, we've been living alongside a human, and through him, I've learned much about your kind!"
At this, Sylvanas's expression darkened.
She opened her mouth to retort but stopped herself after glancing at Alaric.
She wanted to see how this man would respond.
Lor'themar continued, his dissatisfaction evident. "I can't understand why Commander Sylvanas insists on allowing a human into the Farstriders, participating in our ranger training. That Nathanos Marris—his talent and skill are abysmal. Yet, through some kind of flowery words, he has won over Commander Sylvanas and remained among the Farstriders.
He doesn't even have the courage to compete with me in archery! I've figured it out—you humans aren't skilled at anything, but your talent for deceit is unmatched."
Lor'themar's words drew unanimous agreement from the rangers—except for Nathanos Marris himself.
The sole human among the Farstriders, Nathanos, already stood out awkwardly in the group of high elves.
Though they usually concealed their disdain due to Sylvanas's presence, Lor'themar's open criticism now brought it to the surface.
Yet Nathanos couldn't openly refute it, as doing so would only worsen the situation and embarrass Sylvanas. He sighed inwardly, a thought surfacing in his mind.
"I've already learned most of the ranger techniques. Maybe it's time to return to Lordaeron and leave all this trouble behind."
He had considered this before. The rangers' rejection and the intricacies of elven politics had long pushed him toward his homeland.
However, he hesitated, held back by his gratitude to Sylvanas and his unspoken feelings for her.
But now...
"Let the memories of this place and my hidden affections fade away with the wind," he thought.
In the original story, Nathanos made the same decision, returning to his homeland.
Later, the goddess herself, struggling with the absence of her admirer, reversed the dynamic. Sylvanas's growing curiosity about humans eventually led her to pursue Nathanos.
What followed was the improbable tale of the "admirer's reversal."
Perhaps, in that relationship, Sylvanas's rebellion against elven society and her curiosity about humans played a dominant role.
But this time, the admirer was truly left with nothing.
Alaric, uninterested in the plight of Nathanos, focused on the arrogant elves before him. He had his own way of dealing with their pride.
"You mentioned an archery competition earlier," Alaric said to Lor'themar, his tone condescending. "So you're saying you excel in archery?"
"While I'm not as skilled as the Windrunner commanders, I'm far superior to you humans," Lor'themar replied smugly. "What, do you want to try?"
"How laughable," Alaric sneered. "Excelling among high elves has clearly gone to your head. Do you want to see what a so-called 'incompetent' human's archery looks like?"
