Chapter 12: Lost just because of just because?
To some extent, Lunelle once again used his insignificant male existence to personally experience how difficult it was for a boy to survive in a world ravaged by the Honkai.
However, at this moment, Lunelle was completely unaware that this would be the last time he would experience the hardships of being a "male."
"Damn it, my body is actually starting to lose feeling. Am I really going to turn into a dead soldier?"
Lunelle watched helplessly as lines of destruction rapidly spread across his body, his movements growing increasingly sluggish and unresponsive.
However, despite his body being covered with the signs of Honkai erosion, Lunelle was shocked to find that his mind remained unnaturally clear.
At this moment, he couldn't help but suspect that his adaptability to Honkai had interfered with his consciousness.
But Lunelle, who had never been directly exposed to Honkai before, had no idea why he was experiencing such extreme erosion from his very first encounter with Honkai energy.
In truth, it wasn't his meager 21 points of Honkai adaptability that was doing anything special. Rather, the Honkai energy he had come into contact with was simply on a completely different scale—a "billion" points of intensity beyond anything normal.
After all, as previously mentioned, all of Cocolia's arrangements had been carefully crafted to artificially create the ideal cradle for the birth of a Herrscher.
So, no matter how restrained the Honkai energy released by these artificial means was, it had to at least meet the absolute minimum requirement for a Herrscher's emergence, right?
Furthermore, the very building where Lunelle had been staying was situated in an area where high-density Honkai energy was spreading at its most concentrated levels, making it one of the hardest-hit zones.
At this moment, Lunelle was directly resisting the erosion of Herrscher-level Honkai energy with his barely existent Honkai adaptability.
Under normal circumstances, with a mere 21 points of adaptability, if he came into contact with this level of Honkai energy, he would have turned into a dead soldier within three seconds.
However, by sheer chance, Lunelle possessed several permanent talents, which unexpectedly delayed his complete transformation into a dead soldier.
His body had not entirely succumbed to death yet, and his unwavering consciousness still granted him a chance to turn the tables.
After all, his golden finger simulator existed deep within his mind, and at this very moment, he still had one simulation attempt left!
"Whatever! No matter what terrible price I have to pay—Systema! Start the simulation now!"
[Host command confirmed. Simulation initiating...]
Lunelle, whose body was on the verge of collapse and seemed moments away from losing all control, heard the simulator's prompt in his mind. Instantly, his consciousness transitioned into the exclusive space of the simulation.
To be honest, given his dire circumstances, Lunelle couldn't help but entertain some unrealistic fantasies now that the simulation had started.
After all, just like any protagonist in a typical novel, there had to be some sort of miraculous turnaround at the most critical moment, right?
Even though he had been killed over and over again in his previous three days of preparation, at the very least, at this life-or-death juncture, there should be some sort of transformation in this simulation where he was risking everything, right?
With such hopeful thoughts in mind, Lunelle once again took on the form of his first wife—Seele.
For the seventh time, he arrived at the same decrepit hut where he had met his end six times before.
However, the moment he landed, Lunelle could feel that something was different this time.
Previously, during the last six attempts, it had always felt as though he was forcefully inserted into Seele's body, like an outsider controlling her actions.
But this time, he felt as if he had truly lived in this world as Seele for over a decade.
Perhaps it was because he had died here six times before, but this time, Lunelle was certain—he could feel an inexplicable sense of "belonging" to this place.
And then, just like before, the Cocoon of the End and the Sea of Quanta—the two beings that Lunelle had become all too familiar with—appeared once again, staring straight at him...
"Since there's finally some kind of change, maybe I can survive past the scripted death that has always killed me before?"
For the first time, this simulation felt genuinely different from the previous six instant deaths.
At this moment, Lunelle was so overwhelmed with emotion that he nearly shed tears.
Six times!
He had been mercilessly killed six times by this monstrous force!
And now, at last, he could see a sliver of hope, a chance to break the cycle of endless death.
Anyone would be moved to tears in such a situation.
Unfortunately, as he existed in a state of pure consciousness, he couldn't actually cry, so he had no choice but to suppress these emotions.
As expected, the sequence of events played out just like in the previous six failures. The dishonorable Cocoon of the End was the first to be born, and as always, its first course of action was to grant Lunelle—who had assumed Seele's form—a massive "hug."
And then...
[You are dead.]
Lunelle: ????? ????? ????? ?????
Uh, yes...
Despite his real body being on the verge of turning into a dead soldier...
Despite knowing that if this simulation failed, the consequences would be unimaginable...
Despite feeling a tangible difference in his simulated state compared to his previous six attempts...
Despite everything being so different this time, Lunelle still couldn't last more than three seconds in the embrace of the Cocoon of the End.
The result was still the same—his consciousness was not pure enough, and so, he was forcibly killed for the seventh time at the conscious level.
And then, just as always, the all-too-familiar simulation settlement screen appeared before him.
Upon seeing the blunt and merciless description of the settlement results, Lunelle, who had somewhat expected this outcome, could only let out a bitter chuckle.
"Ah... so that's how it is. Things really have progressed to this point. So, what was meant to happen has finally happened, huh?"
[Simulation Evaluation: Although you still went through the motions and failed to change anyone or anything, you do appear to be somewhat different from before.]
[Simulation Rating: F]
[Simulation Settlement: The host will pay the price and lose—just because!]
Lunelle: "..."
