Chapter 227: Chapter 227: The Future
Thor leaned forward, his tone grave. "Let me make this clear. The Thanos I'm talking about isn't just any tyrant. He's the biggest tyrant in the universe. Every planet he invades, he wipes out half of all life. But he's grown tired of conquering one planet at a time. Now, he's hunting the Infinity Stones. Once he collects all six, he'll have the power to erase half of all life in the universe… with just a snap of his fingers."
He demonstrated with a quick snap of his fingers, the sound sharp and ominous.
Strange frowned but remained composed. "You can rest assured," he said firmly. "The Eye of Agamotto is a sacred relic, sworn to be protected by every Sorcerer Supreme. Kamar-Taj will defend it with everything we have."
Thor nodded approvingly. "Good. Asgard won't sit idly by either. Many years ago, my father fought off Thanos when he tried to steal the stones. That defeat kept him dormant for years. But now…" Thor's voice trailed off as his expression darkened. "My father is old, and Thanos is on the move again."
He clenched his fist, lightning crackling faintly around him. "This time, he won't escape. I'll make sure of it."
As Thor finished speaking, his communicator lit up. Checking the message, his face grew serious. "Prepare yourselves. I need to leave."
After Thor's departure, Strange sat down, his brows furrowed in thought. Muttering an incantation, he activated the Eye of Agamotto, the relic spinning rapidly as a green glow filled the room. Wong watched with concern as Strange floated slightly, his expression strained.
Suddenly, with a sharp bang, Strange dropped to the floor.
"Are you okay?" Wong rushed to his side, worry etched on his face. "What did you just do?"
Strange groaned, catching his breath. "I looked into the future," he said hoarsely. "I saw every possible outcome of the war."
Wong's eyes widened. "How many outcomes did you see?"
"Fourteen million six hundred and five."
Wong hesitated before asking, "How many times… did we win?"
Strange's expression shifted, a mixture of hesitation and something resembling dark humor. "All of them."
Wong blinked. "What?"
Laughing nervously, Wong shook his head. "You're telling me we win every time? That's… actually hilarious! Poor Thanos. All this buildup, and he doesn't stand a chance."
Strange's face grew somber. "It's not as simple as it sounds. In most of those victories, the cost is almost too great to bear."
Wong's smile faded. "What do you mean?"
"In twelve million of those outcomes, the distinction between victory and defeat is almost meaningless," Strange said grimly. "Kamar-Taj is destroyed. Asgard falls. Earth's civilization is wiped out. The price of victory in those futures is humanity being sent back to the Stone Age."
Wong sucked in a sharp breath. "And how many outcomes did we win with acceptable losses?"
Strange hesitated. "One."
Thor returned to Asgard, his expression heavy with purpose. At the Bifrost, Frigga was waiting for him, her calm presence a balm to his tension. Beside her stood Loki, his face a mix of wariness and something unspoken.
"Have you seen him?" Thor asked quietly.
Frigga nodded. "He wants to meet you. Both of you."
"Where is he?"
"Midgard," Frigga said softly.
In northern Norway, Thor and Loki stepped through a portal onto a rocky cliff overlooking the sea. Before them stood an old man gazing out at the horizon. For a moment, they didn't recognize him.
"This… is Father?" Loki murmured, his voice laced with disbelief.
Thor was equally stunned. Gone was the powerful figure whose mere presence could command a room, whose every gesture radiated strength and divine authority. Standing before them now was a man nearing the end of his life, his once-mighty aura faded to the quiet dignity of an elder.
The sight brought an ache to Thor's chest. "The end of a hero," he thought bitterly.
Odin turned slowly, his voice soft but steady. "My sons, come closer."
Thor stepped forward without hesitation. Loki lingered for a moment before following.
"Sit with me," Odin said, gesturing to the grass beside him. "My time is nearly up."
Thor swallowed hard. "Father, I… I might have a way to extend your life."
Odin smiled faintly. "No, Thor. That won't be necessary. I know you've achieved much—changed even fate itself. But this is not something you should change."
Thor struggled to respond. "But—"
Odin raised a hand, silencing him gently. "I know what you're thinking. Yes, there are ways to prolong my life. But those methods require me to relinquish my divine essence, to become an ordinary Asgardian. That is not a life I wish to live. I would rather die as the King of the Gods."
His voice grew lighter, tinged with a peace that seemed almost unnatural. "Besides, I will not truly die. As a King of the Gods, my spirit will endure, watching over Asgard and my sons."
Thor looked away, his jaw tightening as he fought back emotion. Loki remained silent, his expression unreadable.
Odin's gaze softened as he looked at them. "This is the way of things. I am proud of you both, more than you know."
Thor's throat tightened as he whispered, "Father…"
Odin placed a hand on Thor's shoulder, his grip weaker than Thor remembered but still reassuring. "Take care of each other. And take care of Asgard."
The wind carried Odin's final words as he turned back toward the sea. The mighty King of Asgard, the man who had shaped the Nine Realms, stood quietly, his journey at its end.
The pride of a king. The peace of a father.
