Chapter 228: Chapter 228: The Fall of Odin
Odin's gaze turned somber as he spoke. "My child… Ragnarök is coming."
"Ragnarök?!" Loki's eyes widened in shock. He had heard the term only in whispered legends and ominous prophecies.
Before Loki could say more, Thor interrupted. "No, Father. I won't let that happen. Surtur has been defeated by me. His crown is sealed in Jotunheim, where the frost will eat away at the fire's power. I can destroy him completely."
Odin shook his head, a faint smile tugging at his lips. "And her? Can you stop her too?"
Thor hesitated, his expression hardening with resolve. "Yes. I won't use Ragnarök. It's a weapon of mutual destruction, and I will never let it come to that."
"Wait!" Loki interjected, looking between them with mounting confusion. "Who is 'her'? What does she have to do with Ragnarök?"
Odin's voice grew heavy. "The Goddess of Death… Hela. My firstborn. Your sister."
Loki froze, his mouth slightly open as he struggled to process the revelation.
Odin continued. "Her ambition grew beyond my control. I had no choice but to seal her away."
Loki's shock deepened. The history of Asgard he thought he knew was incomplete. The tale of Hela had been buried so deeply that not even myths of her remained. Only Odin, and perhaps Frigga, carried the burden of that truth.
Odin turned to Thor, his gaze softening. "I know you don't agree with my decisions. That's natural. In many ways, you and your siblings remind me of myself in my younger days."
His voice grew quieter. "Tyranny, conquest, treachery… I was not always the kind ruler I am now. When I was young, my name inspired fear throughout the Nine Realms. I was the monster that made children cry at night."
Thor remained silent, the weight of his father's words settling over him. Loki forced a thin smile, but it didn't reach his eyes.
Odin gently placed a hand on Thor's shoulder. "You have proven that you can forge a new path, different from mine. Maybe you're right. Maybe our family doesn't need to fight each other."
His smile faded slightly as he added, "But I won't live to see that future. My time has come."
Thor's voice broke the silence. "Father, I… I can save you."
Odin's eyes twinkled with understanding. "I know you can, Thor. You've already defied fate in so many ways. You even changed your mother's destiny. But this is one battle you must let go."
Thor clenched his fists. "But—"
Odin raised a hand, stopping him gently. "I know the price of your methods. To live, I would have to shed my divinity and become an ordinary Asgardian. That is not the life I want. I would rather pass as the King of the Gods, with my spirit eternal."
Thor fell silent, his heart heavy.
Odin's voice turned pragmatic. "There's something you must remember. Hela's life is tied to Asgard itself. If she returns to Asgard, her power will become limitless. You must find a way to stop her before that happens."
Thor nodded, absorbing the weight of the task ahead. Loki remained silent, his usual snark absent as he grappled with the enormity of the situation.
Odin pointed to the horizon. "Do you know where we are?"
"Norway," Loki said instinctively, though confusion flickered in his eyes.
Thor stepped forward, understanding dawning. "This is where it all began. Northern Europe, the birthplace of the Viking legends. The place where Asgard left its mark on this world."
Odin smiled faintly. "Exactly. If, despite your best efforts, you cannot save Asgard… remember this. Asgard is not a place. It is a people. And they can find a home anywhere, even here."
As he finished speaking, his body began to shimmer with golden light. The glow intensified as Odin's form dissolved, scattering into the air like dust carried by the wind.
Thor stared, his heart aching as the realization struck: Odin, the King of the Gods, was gone.
Taking a deep breath, Thor straightened his shoulders. From this moment on, the weight of the Nine Realms rested squarely on his shoulders. There was no one else to bear it.
Across the Nine Realms, an inexplicable tremor was felt. Though they didn't know why, countless beings sensed a profound change, a loss that resonated deeply.
Thor understood what it meant. With Odin's passing, the universe's novice protection had ended. There would be no more deterrents for invaders, no more barriers to keep the Nine Realms safe. Enemies would descend without fear, emboldened by the absence of their greatest obstacle.
But Thor clenched his fists. Let them come. I'll knock them all down.
In Asgard, Frigga stood at a balcony, gazing into the distance. The sky seemed emptier, and though she had prepared herself for this day, the pain of losing Odin hit her harder than she'd expected.
After a long silence, she turned and walked briskly to the Bifrost Control Room, her resolve firm.
"Heimdall," she said sharply. "I need to go to Earth immediately."
Heimdall bowed slightly. "As you wish."
"And listen carefully," she added. "No matter what happens, you are not to intervene in any internal conflict. Asgard's strength cannot be squandered on infighting."
Her words were laced with urgency, a foresight borne of wisdom. She feared not just Ragnarök, but the cost it might exact on Asgard's vitality. If they exhausted themselves in battle against Hela, they would be vulnerable to greater threats—like Thanos.
Before departing, Frigga hesitated, then handed Heimdall a scroll. "Make the contents of this public when the time is right."
