I Became a Police Officer in a Superhero Genre

Chapter 48 - Even the Police in This World Have Jinxes(6)

The Chosen Ones. Let’s recall who those bastards are.

In the original novel, human-centric idiots kidnapped and killed superpower users, doing things that people shouldn’t do to other people.

Meanwhile, in this world, instead of showing sympathy for the victims, people spout nonsense saying the superpower users deserved to die, and hatred between superpower users and non-superpower users reaches its worst.

To make matters worse, for some damn reason the human-centric bishop is released, causing the anger of innocent superpower users to break through the critical point.

What some bastards try to do under the name of these Chosen Ones is gather superpower users under the pretext of a human rights movement, exploiting their anger and committing crimes.

It’s the first domino that starts the collapse of society in Secret Hero Rise, and at the same time.

It’s also the time when conflict reaches its peak between innocent citizens who become superpower users due to Sai’s superpower awakening drug and are treated like monsters and bullied,
and civilians who indiscriminately hate those who became superpower users without even thinking that they could become superpower users themselves if unlucky.

New Hope fights alone in the midst of this chaos, not belonging to either superpower users or civilians.
She’s called a hero by ordinary citizens, but civilians ignore her due to those who hate her for being a superpower user.

Superpower users ostracize her, saying she’s a traitor who only arrests fellow superpower users even if they’re criminals and only helps non-superpower users.

Of course, New Hope would stop anyone committing crimes in front of her even if they weren’t superpower users, and she’s someone who would help anyone who needs help regardless of whether they’re superpower users or not.

But no one acknowledges such a New Hope. It’s at a level that seems like the author is showing that both superpower users and civilians only see what they want to see.

When I first encountered it as a novel, I thought I could somewhat understand why that Sai bitch became so mentally ill, seeing people even crazier than the cancer-ridden citizens often appearing in hero stories.

But thinking about it, that damn bitch is the one who instigated such hatred between people, so ‘understanding’ simply changed to ‘this fucking bitch’.

Come to think of it, I knew about the development of events and the abilities of the criminal bastards, but… my memory is hazy.

Memories that are spotty and hazy as if ants ate the memory notebook. I’m glad I wrote it down in a notebook at home, human memory is really shabby. Or maybe my head is just bad.

…This isn’t what I originally wanted to say. What I originally wanted to say is that this incident caused by the Chosen Ones is really shitty.

It’s shitty that the trigger for this incident started because bastards who only think of doing bad things exploited struggling people who were just crying out to live like humans.

It’s also shitty that I can’t do anything as an ordinary police officer because the Chosen Ones bastards pretend to fight for superpower user rights on the surface while doing shitty things behind the scenes.

My feelings were especially shitty hearing the news that the Dokkaebi is among those shitty bastards while the original development has been smashed and fallen into peaceful eternal sleep.

I can’t understand why the Dokkaebi is among such scammer bastards, but I maintained my composure as much as possible. There were two reasons.

One is because it’s stupid to think the Dokkaebi is really among them just based on Yunari’s words.
The other is because the Dokkaebi I know, although a criminal, is at least a consistently shitty bastard who wouldn’t join such terrorists.

Well, saying he wouldn’t do that because he’s a criminal is a ridiculous statement. But it’s idiotic to jump to conclusions without evidence or witnessing it myself.
In the first place, things have diverged a lot from the original, and although discrimination against superpower users is severe, the human-centric bishop already died and was buried long ago. There hasn’t been an incident to push people’s anger past the critical point yet.
There’s a possibility that the Chosen Ones aren’t the Chosen Ones I know –

“You’ve figured it all out, right Detective? That those guys are definitely plotting something! Even coming out in that physical condition. Really… if there were only detectives like you, there wouldn’t be any unjustly treated people in this country.”

But this girl was nodding her head, playing her own tune before I could say anything, as if she had eaten something wrong.

She said she could help me with the materials she collected and rummaged through a drawer in the corner of the room to hand something to me.

Looking at what it was, they appeared to be secretly taken photographs. What was contained in those photos were images of currently wanted super villains and people who looked familiar from somewhere.

Although everyone’s clothing and appearance was different, the one thing that was the same was that the background where they were photographed looked like some abandoned building.

…Why the fuck do all these criminal bastards gather in such places? Are their lungs so healthy that they don’t worry about fine dust?
As I was thinking that while examining the photos, Yunari spoke excitedly, breathing heavily:

“These are photos I took of guys who always appear at meetings of those Chosen Ones bastards. I haven’t met the Dokkaebi, but-
As you can see, dangerous guys with arrest warrants out and ordinary superpower users are gathered at this meeting…?”

“They say it’s an organization gathering strength for improving superpower users’ human rights, but isn’t it suspicious that they’re gathering everyone whether they’re criminals or whoever? That’s why you came out, right Detective?
I haven’t secured exact evidence of what they did yet, but I’ve confirmed all the people who participated in the meetings more than twice so far. If you look here-”

Yunari even looked excited as she explained about the people photographed and emphasized how dangerous this meeting was.

Certainly, if notorious criminals in the country have gathered, it’s something that needs to be checked immediately to see what these bastards are doing when they get together.

But the police didn’t even pretend to listen when this was reported? Do you remember those bastards’ faces? It seems there are many bastards who need to be audited besides me.

No, more than that. The photos this girl took. I examined closely the photos Yunari said she took.

Among the people photographed here, there were some classified as super villains,
but most were ordinary people with strong superpowers who weren’t classified as super villains.

The government classifies as super villains those who repeatedly commit crimes besides cases where they lose their minds and run wild when awakening superpowers.

So if they don’t commit any more crimes after first awakening, or if they do but their superpower is weak and the crimes committed are only misdemeanors, they aren’t put on a nationwide wanted list like super villains.

But still, since they’re superpower users and you never know what dangers there might be, the police keep personal information on confirmed superpower users.

This information is classified as confidential and kept only among special investigation teams without being disclosed. So if the photos here weren’t just taken by anyone – how did she know and photograph strong superpower users?

I looked at Yunari with a dubious gaze and spoke with a feeling of “surely she won’t get caught”:

“…I only see dangerous people. You took good photos.”

“Yes! I carefully selected and photographed only people with dangerous abilities without getting caught!”

“This person’s ability is confidential. How did you find out? Did you hack?”

“No! How could I do such a stupid thing! While looking for sources of superpower awakening drugs for research, I bribed a detective I got to know – … Uh, ah, uhhh? No?”

Yunari, who had been proudly spilling what she had done, trailed off as if she realized what nonsense she was babbling.

Good. I’ve decided. Let’s turn this bitch over to the police first and think about it. Looking at her behavior, it seems she knows a lot of dangerous things, so it looks like she’ll be silenced at the level of other police officers, not Sai.

…Then is it okay to just arrest her? I hesitated for a moment, but the current me who has become disabled in my arm and leg and been through a lot of shitty things has no consideration for others.

She should have lived better. I gripped the IV stand I had put down beside me. Seeing my action, Yunari’s face turned white and she started waving her hands.

“If you turn yourself in now, you won’t get hit. What will you do?”

When I suggested turning herself in, Yunari said nonsense like ‘This person’s eyes are serious…’ and started speaking urgently while breaking out in a cold sweat. I listened to her words with an attitude of “let’s hear what she has to say for now”.

“N-No! That! Wait a minute! This is like, you know, a vigilante group! Because the world is so rough these days! I’m also for my own justice! Right?! Like New Hope!!”

“She doesn’t bribe the police to leak confidential information or buy illegal drugs though.”

“Th-That’s right. That’s true.”

Although I don’t have handcuffs right now, and my police qualifications are ambiguous since a work suitability assessment has been submitted due to my disability. But I should catch those who need to be caught. Thinking that, I painfully got up.

Instead of worrying whether I could handle a superpower user with one arm and leg out of commission – just as I strongly gripped the IV stand –

-Ding dong!

“Vi-Visitor! A visitor! I’m coming now!!”

She snapped to her senses at the sound of the doorbell ringing and immediately ran out. Ah damn it. I clicked my tongue and tried to chase after her, but the leg that had been pierced by a bullet doesn’t move well.

I can’t catch her? I should have considered my physical condition. Yunari’s movements were slow enough that I could have easily caught her normally, but in a state where my arm and leg were messed up, I couldn’t even catch such a woman.

I gritted my teeth at how pitifully weak my body had become, but more than that, I was angry at myself for misjudging.

I should have secured more information about the Chosen Ones and made sure she couldn’t escape. Has my head hardened from lying in a hospital room for 5 weeks?

The thought vigorously springs up that even if I succeed in rehabilitation and return to the field, in this state I could die to even an insignificant petty criminal.

No, this isn’t the time to think like that. I painfully dragged one leg while trying to chase after Yunari, flung open the door and started pursuing – fu…ck what is that.

“Hey. You’re Yunari, right? What a pity. That’s why we wondered why you were digging into something you couldn’t handle.”

“Wh-Who are you?”

“Oh my. I heard you were a researcher. You’re not very smart. Miss. Miss, you’re going to die here now.”

Three men with dark skin wearing cheap suits are snickering at the front door while holding knives, and Yunari is sitting down in the living room blinking her eyes at them.

It’s natural to be surprised when people suddenly barge into your house holding knives like that, but whether it’s because of Yunari’s characteristically slow nature, it took time for what should be called a reaction to appear.

She soon turned her head with a somewhat blank face to look at me. She pointed at them with her finger and mouthed without making a sound asking for help.

“Huh? Who are you? This woman’s boyfriend? I heard this woman doesn’t have a boyfriend?”

“Forget it. Let’s just take care of both of them and get out of here quickly. We just need to get paid.”

“…Hey wait. I think I’ve seen that guy’s face before. I think I saw him on TV. But – ah fuck, I can’t remember. Hey you, who are you?”

One of the three seems to remember my face and reacts. I examined those three idiots. Their clothes are shabby but they don’t particularly look like superpower users.

They don’t show the physical peculiarities characteristic of superpower users, and in the first place, superpower users wouldn’t usually walk around with things like kitchen knives. They’re probably just errand boys or fall guys doing shitty things for money.

So – that’s it. When there’s a bitch who leaks confidential information for money and bastards who take murder contracts together, the ones you need to catch first are the contract killers.

“Ah- shit! I really have seen him!? Hey! Won’t you talk!? Who the hell are you?!”

One bastard enters the house with his shoes on and points a knife at me. I briefly checked if those bastards had anything white.
The bastards were wearing Hawaiian shirts with terrible designs under their dress shirts and there was nothing white at all.
Good, if there’s nothing white, there shouldn’t be any big problems. That’s what I thought. Although white itself seems to have become a color of misfortune for me lately.
That’s a problem to think about later. I put strength into my left hand holding the IV stand and answered the question of the bastard pointing the knife:

“The people’s cudgel, you son of a bitch.”

Whether it’s a cane or a cudgel, it hurts when you get hit. I swung the IV stand at that bastard’s forehead. A cracking sound rang through the air.
