I Became a Police Officer in a Superhero Genre

Chapter 49 - Even the Police in This World Have Jinxes(7)

If someone asks if there’s a sure way to win in a fight, I would answer that it’s having a weapon.

Whether you’ve learned boxing or hapkido, unless you’re exceptionally good at fighting, when someone with a weapon fights someone barehanded, the one with the weapon is more likely to win.

The barehanded opponent needs to land many hits, but someone with a weapon can finish it with one lucky stab, so obviously the one with the weapon has the advantage.

There’s a reason most self-defense techniques tell you to run away rather than fight when dealing with an armed opponent, and even professionally trained police officers are in danger when facing someone rushing at them with a knife like in movies.

Then if asked whether I, facing three fall guys or contract killers with knives, am in danger? I would proudly answer no.

Although my right arm and one leg are messed up, I wouldn’t lose to those bastards.

The reasons for that are firstly that I also had a weapon, and even though that weapon was just an IV stand, I had longer reach than them.

The entrance where those bastards were standing, the fact that this house’s structure had a narrow ㄷ-shaped entrance, and that being a home there were many things to throw, were big factors.

Simply put, I used my long reach to beat the shit out of those bastards before they could rush in, and threw everything in the house to tangle them up so they couldn’t move.

Usually in a fight you’re told to guard your back, but that’s when facing multiple opponents. Conversely, if you have more numbers than the opponent but there’s a wall at your back, it means you’re fucking crowded.

Fights are about momentum from the start. Whether you have greater numbers or knives, if you get hit first and then keep getting hit without being able to do anything, people naturally become intimidated.

That’s the same whether they’re gangsters or fall guys with nothing to lose, or contract killers. Even if they’re crazy enough to attack regardless of whether it’s a detective or whatever, they’ll back off if they think they might die.
So to put it simply, it’s like this. I threw everything like a dog on a hot day and beat up these bastards to catch them. What’s a knife? Humans are animals that handle throwing and spears, you sons of bitches.

“What are you looking at, you bastards? Where did you learn to enter someone’s house with your shoes on? Hurry up and clean it.”

“Y-Yes!”

I hit the head of the bastard who entered with his shoes on. The bastards who couldn’t escape because they locked the door themselves and got beaten followed my nonsense order to clean up, not wanting to die.

The three contract killers are cleaning up the household items I threw. It was a satisfactory result.
Although the IV stand was completely smashed. Perhaps because of the memory of getting beaten so badly dust would fly on a rainy day, those bastards trembled in fear just from me holding it.

Seeing that, I was certain these bastards wouldn’t do anything strange anymore and quietly – wiped off my sweat.

To be honest, it was dangerous. The words above were bravado. I’m standing in front of these bastards trying to look as calm as possible now, but I’m actually in a state where I feel like I’ll collapse from being completely drained.
To be more tired than after running at full speed for an hour against guys like this, how weak has my body become?

I click my tongue at my body’s condition, but as long as no one is hurt, all I need to do now is prevent these bastards from doing anything reckless until the police arrive.
I tell myself I just need to endure a little longer and stand with as much strength in my eyes as possible.

But.

“You there! Are you not cleaning the floor properly?! If you made someone’s house a mess, you should clean it properly!”

“…Why are you…”

“What?! Do you want to get hit more by the detective? Do you want to get hurt more painfully before the police arrive?!”

“…”

Yunari, who was making me clean not only the living room I had messed up but even her room as if it was natural.
The fall guys or contract killers (it’s annoying, let’s call them contract killers) look at Yunari with eyes wondering why they should listen to her words, but when she mentions me, they lower their eyes and follow.

Oh my, those are eyes saying they’re so happy they could die. Does she think we’re on the same team because she’s standing with me?
I let out a hollow laugh, then put my hand on the shoulder of the triumphant Yunari and said:

“Why are you acting like you won’t be arrested?”

“…Huh?”

“You confessed, didn’t you? That you bribed the police and leaked confidential information. Tell them well who helped you when we get to the station.”

“De-Detective? I was also threatened with my life by these people, do you really have to do this?”

“That’s why you have to go. At least you’ll be safe in a holding cell, won’t you?”

Plus you’ll probably go to prison for a few years, but that’s not my business. You should have just lived following the law from the start.

I grabbed the back of her neck as she tried to run away again and slammed her to the floor. Yunari makes a sound like a frog crushed under a rock.

Whether she goes into bread and says something about the superpower awakening drug or whatever, let her do as she pleases. Maybe because she’ll become a super villain in the future, she seems rotten from the start, so I don’t care what happens to her anymore.

I used the neutralizing drug? Where’s the evidence? If Sai knows I had the neutralizing drug, she might pay some attention.

But if I say I already used it so there’s no threat to her, that bitch will probably just laugh it off as a funny incident. Or mock me with it.

Come to think of it, Sai is the one who made the superpower neutralizing drug that wasn’t even in the original, so it doesn’t seem like she made it just because she was bored.

Then wasn’t it rather dangerous that I had it in the first place? Thinking that, it seems this woman would be better off in jail after all.

Ah, what if she awakens as Over Mind like I worried before?
Then I can just put her in bread again. The reason I didn’t arrest her before was because she hadn’t really done anything bad with the superpower awakening drug, and I didn’t think she had committed a capital offense.

In that situation, arresting her could have put her life in danger so I didn’t touch her, but this bitch is crossing the line pretty hard, fuck? Then I have to arrest her.

Although there are still suspicious points about Yunari, I can find out about that later. With my body in this state, it’s hard to investigate further.

Why did I really escape from the intensive care unit? I sighed.
Since I’ve caught the contract killer bastards too, as the police investigate why Yunari was targeted, they’ll pay attention to her words and start investigating the Chosen Ones.

Yes, no matter how stupid the police are, if I go report again, they’ll believe it. They even requested a murder, right? Although these bastards won’t open their mouths.

If they see the situation of a murder request added to what Yunari investigated,
unless they’re extremely stupid, they’ll think there’s something to this ‘Chosen Ones’ group, and it will somehow be resolved well. Surely.

…Fuck, why don’t I believe what I’m saying at all?

I wrinkled my face as if I had swallowed a rotten tangerine, made Yunari kneel in the living room, then told the contract killer bastards to finish cleaning.

Meanwhile, as Yunari was babbling nonsense about how she’s competent and something about sitting in a chair that helps heroes, I clenched my fist thinking it would be okay to hit her once.

Suddenly, one of the bastards holding a rag and wiping shoe marks off the floor started giggling and babbling:

“Kekeke… Do you think you’ll live if you go to prison?! Wherever you hide, the Chosen Ones bastards will kill you? I know, when those bastards start moving, it doesn’t matter how many police there are!”

“Fu-uck- I was planning to just kill you bitch and leave this country. Looks like we’ll all die together! K-kekeke! Damn pig bastard! You’ll die too! Those guys don’t let anyone who interferes live!”

…??

The contract killer bastard suddenly going crazy and spouting nonsense.

Cursing that I’ll die too is shitty, but it’s fine since these bastards do it every day. But this idiot bastard is telling everything about who his client is?

Certainly, the Chosen Ones bastards are a group of superpower users who cross the line and run wild under the pretext of reclaiming superpower users’ human rights, so they might try to kill anyone whether police or not if things go wrong.

But if they’re the type who might kill anyone whether police or not, isn’t it normal to never say who ordered the job, even to save their own life?
Contract killers keep their mouths shut not because of credit or anything, but because their lives are on the line. But what’s with this guy?

I looked at that bastard in disbelief. The other two bastards who came with him were also turning blue in the face, shocked at the words the suddenly enraged idiot was spouting.

Are all contract killers these days mentally challenged? No. It’s more likely that humans as a species are rotten.

As I continued pondering, Yunari, as if not wanting to miss this timing, prostrated herself on the floor and spoke in the most desperate voice in the world:

“De-Detective, you heard that right?! I’ll admit it! I, I did something stupid trying to investigate them!
I know a lot about those bastards, and what he said is true! Even the police can’t help me! S-So won’t you help me, Detective?!”

“If you help me, I’ll help you catch those bastards with all my might! I, uh, absolutely… ! Please save me!!”

At Yunari’s tearful words, I rubbed my face with my uninjured left hand.

Am I going through this ordeal because I went crazy and left the hospital? No, in the first place, why is this bitch acting up to me?

No matter how you look at it, aren’t I a patient? Ask some proper police officers. I said that while shaking my leg to shake off Yunari’s arm.

She didn’t let go like a piece of gum. Fuck.

Before the police arrived, I heard everything Yunari knew about this incident.

The representative of the Chosen Ones is named Park Jung-hoon. He’s the representative of the non-profit civic group ‘Chosen Ones’ and a man who gathers superpower users under the pretext of improving superpower users’ human rights.

The way he gathers people is simple. At first, he investigates superpower users who have gone through hardships regardless of how strong they are, then sends them a targeted message.

That message says that to find the rightful rights of superpower users now, superpower users need to join forces.
It says they need to show that they are people, not monsters.

Such messages would inevitably sound very attractive to those suffering from discrimination,
and that’s how the Chosen Ones draw in superpower users who have gone through hardships.

The Chosen Ones gained support from superpower users by helping unfortunate superpower users or calling for proper punishment for discrimination against superpower users.

During the 5 weeks I was hospitalized, they became famous enough to appear on the news.

Looking just at this, they appear to be a group fighting for superpower users’ human rights as they say, but according to Yunari, that is just a well-crafted mask of the Chosen Ones, Yunari said.

“Various superpower users are gathered in the Chosen Ones. It’s a terrible story, but those bastards are entangling people so they can’t escape by committing murder, assault, kidnapping, etc. to those with powerful superpowers, saying they’ll get revenge for them.”

“Not only that, the head of the group is brainwashing people who feel a sense of belonging to the group, saying they need to get revenge as much as they’ve been hurt.”

“It’s not just that they gathered for a human rights movement, all those people are crossing the line more and more in both ideology and actions. On top of that, recently dangerous super villains have been gathering and plotting to overturn the whole country… it looks really dangerous.”

“What did the police do?”

“When I reported it, they told me not to talk nonsense.”

“They’re talking nonsense themselves.”

I wondered which idiot did such a thing, but.

Feeling relieved that the activities of the Chosen Idiots roughly matched the knowledge in my hazy memories,
I thought that before returning to the hospital, I should go to the Special Investigation Team and file an investigation request directly.

But before that.
I examined the faces in the photos Yunari said she took. A photo of the most notoriously shitty super villains gathered together.

From the Butcher, who is a colleague of the Destroyer bastard who smashed my car last time, to the Drug Dealer, Sculptor, Hydrokinetic, and others.

Bastards who view human lives as less than trash on the street were all gathered. Is this the Avengers of the criminal world? I felt a headache coming on, but decided to think differently.

The fact that they’ve gathered such bastards but aren’t moving right away means it’s not enough by their standards yet. Since they don’t intend to cause trouble until something is fulfilled by their standards –

We should tell the police to protect Yunari, and just throw these materials to New Hope. That’s the best. No, more than the best, for Yunari to live, she needs to be at the police station right away.

This time, Yunari and I survived because the guys who came were idiot bastards, but there won’t be a next time. Next time, they’ll send real dangerous super villains, not such fools.

They probably sent ordinary contract killers instead of superpower users to prevent people from knowing why she died and who ordered her death.

Now that this idiot has blurted out the client, the Chosen Ones will want to erase me and Yunari as quickly as possible.

No matter where she runs away to, she won’t be able to survive alone against super villains wielding outlandish superpowers, so going to the police station is still the best option.

Especially dangerous is the one called Hydrokinetic. He’s a madman who enjoys kidnapping and killing people with his superpower that allows him to move and interfere anywhere there’s water.

If even a bastard like this is on the Chosen Ones’ side, it would be impossible to run away anywhere. Honestly – if I use my head a bit more, I feel like there might be other ways to secure Yunari’s safety.

But I’m starting to feel feverish, so it’s too much to think more. My brain feels like it’s about to give up its job and collapse.

So – if this doesn’t seem right, tell me. I rubbed my forehead and conveyed my thoughts to Yunari, who was still making crying noises:

“Right now, the safest place for you to be is the police station. I’ll try to ask them to hide you in a detention center or wherever until the investigation is over.”

“But, those bastards are people who can kill even police officers right away and kill me…”

“They won’t be able to do that right away. If they could overthrow the country or whatever, they would have done it already, but it’s quiet, right? It means they don’t have as much power as they want yet, and until they gather enough power, even those bastards can’t do something like attacking a police station.”

“I, I see?”

Yunari nodded while looking uncomfortable, but in the meantime, I saw the stars in her eyes change into question marks.

Although it’s a description from the novel too, seeing a person’s pupils change into question marks was quite chilling.

Ah damn, this isn’t the important thing.

I hear sirens from outside. I tied up the arms and legs of the three contract killer bastards with rope and threw them in a corner earlier, so there’s no problem.

Yunari said she understood, and as a last thing to tell me, she handed me one more photo,
which showed a man with brown hair and a beard wearing white clothes like a Jesus cosplay.

I was horrified by the appearance of the man in the photo, who had holy-looking white wings but was smiling unpleasantly in contrast, in addition to seeing another bastard wearing shitty white clothes, and asked:
“Who is this?”

“This person is Park Jung-hoon, the representative of the Chosen Ones. His superpower is unknown, but… I know that people belonging to this group call him a god not because of this appearance, but because of his ability.”
Ah, that bastard. Hearing the name, I vaguely recalled from the cave of memories that this bastard was the one who created the Chosen Ones.
In the novel, there was a description that he was a handsome man exuding an inexplicable charisma – but my impression after seeing his face directly in the photo was this:

“On the surface, he looks like he could walk across the sea barefoot.”

“With wings, wouldn’t he fly instead?”

Yunari answered my impression with nonsense. I memorized the face of the man in the photo and then turned my gaze away. The police car siren sound was heard right below.

For now, I need to go with her while she writes her statement and testify together, and to prevent the police from talking nonsense like when Yunari reported before –

After that, let’s quietly return to the hospital. I’ll definitely go back. And then I’ll ignore whoever comes to visit and fucking rest well.

Thinking that, I headed to the bathroom to cool down my fever. Just before cupping water from the sink to cool my face, suddenly, I saw something in the water pooled in the sink.

I thought it was my face, but looking closely, this wasn’t a human face but an arm-

Splash!

“Huh?”

A hand extends from the water pooled in the sink. What flashed through my mind was Hydrokinetic’s ability, and I tried to shake off that hand, but I couldn’t escape while being grabbed and was pulled in.

Ah damn. Is this how I die? With the sudden attack and dizzying vision, I closed my eyes for a moment and when I opened them, what I saw in front of me was-

“Nice to meet you, Detective Lee Mun-su.”

Inside a building that was white all around. The protagonist of the photo Yunari showed me just now.
Brown hair with a beard. The man who is the representative of the Chosen Ones, doing a shitty Jesus cosplay. Park Jung-hoon was in front of me.

I really think I’m going to develop a phobia of the color white, fuck.
