Chapter 26: Chapter 26: Butterfly (Part-2)
[Yuhi's POV]
Getting this whole mess of a family into a healthy state—if that's not a grueling task, then I don't know what is.
The Todoroki family is absolute chaos, and it all stems from one person. Our mission isn't just to prevent harm but to do so while staying covert. And let me tell you, when your target is the second strongest hero in Japan, it's nothing short of terrifying.
The plan was solid, feasible even—thanks to the team I spent an entire year assembling. A group of heroes deemed insignificant on their own, yet together, they became the best support team ever. And now? That very support team was leading the charge. It might sound like lunacy—sending support specialists to handle a situation like this—but the truth is, we weren't here to fight.
We were here to resolve this warfare of a family. Psychological warfare.
For the first few weeks, everything played out as planned.
---
The operation truly began the day Enji Todoroki stormed into his home, his usual fury radiating off him. He slammed the door shut behind him and roared,
"Rei!"
That day, Rei had just put Shoto to sleep. The kid had been sick, crying the entire day, and had finally dozed off. She couldn't risk waking him up, so she kept her voice low when she replied.
Big mistake.
Enji took her silence as an offense.
Before she could even step out of the room, he was already there, looming over her, his face twisted with anger.
"So my words mean nothing to you now?!" he bellowed. "Why aren't you answering me?! Do you think I'm beneath your attention?!"
Rei remained silent—not out of defiance, but fear.
And fear wasn't the only thing brewing inside her.
"Not just fear," my colleague Yakuma had noted that day. "It's seething rage."
That was our cue to act.
Yakuma, who could manipulate emotions, toned down Enji's anger and Rei's fear—though, surprisingly, he also had to dull her rage to prevent an immediate explosion.
And then, Rei snapped.
Her quirk flared. A chilling cold seeped into the air, and for the first time, Enji felt it.
Of course, it wasn't just her power—Hiyashi, our power-amplification specialist, had weakened Enji's strength while boosting Rei's. Yuna, our healer, stood by in case things escalated, and Hikari was ready to intervene if necessary.
But Rei didn't need anyone to fight for her.
"For once—just for once—could you shut your damned mouth and be grateful?!" she shouted. "You're always screaming while I'm rotting away in this—whatever the hell you call a family! I've been nothing but a tool to you! And even that isn't enough for you, is it?!
"Do you even care that your son— YOUR son—has been sick and crying all day?! Did you even bother to ask how he is?! He just fell asleep, and now your screaming has woken him up again!"
From the crib, Shoto began to cry.
"Can you hear that, Enji? CAN YOU?!"
Her voice, raw and unfiltered, shook even me. But more than that—her quirk had manifested a sharp icicle just centimeters from Enji's throat.
And he stepped back.
Not out of strategy.
Not out of control.
But out of fear.
Courtesy of Yakuma.
Rei, realizing her priority, dropped the icicle and rushed to Shoto.
For the Todoroki children, this was new.
Had this happened before, they would've stayed hidden, afraid of being caught in the crossfire. But this time?
All three of them were standing in the hallway, watching.
Toya, the eldest, saw something he never thought possible—Endeavor hesitating. For the first time, his father looked unsure. His mother, usually timid and obedient, had stood her ground.
Fuyumi, conflicted, felt relief but also fear—her mother almost stabbed her father.
Natsuo, too young to understand, was only there because his older siblings were.
And Enji?
The number two hero stood there, unusually silent.
For the first time, he was thinking.
And the words that echoed in his head?
"Either you become a real father to your kids, or I will be the real mother for mine."
It was burned into his memory.
His pride wouldn't let him admit she was right, so he did what he always did—he walked away.
To train.
But as he left, he caught sight of his children.
They had seen everything.
And for Enji Todoroki—that was humiliating.
---
[Narrator's POV]
The next phase of the mission was constant surveillance—keeping Enji calm whenever he was home so that he'd have time to think.
For the first few days, he held back, hesitating whenever he wanted to lash out.
It disgusted him. That he, the number two hero, was shaken by someone as weak as Rei.
But his pride wouldn't let him acknowledge the fear still lingering in his mind.
So, in an attempt to regain control, he resumed training Toya.
This time, he wasn't aiming for Toya to surpass All Might—he had abandoned that goal years ago. No, this time, he was training him for control. Discipline.
For Toya, it was a dream come true.
His father was acknowledging him. Teaching him how to wield his fire without burning himself. For the first time in years, Toya felt like he mattered.
But Enji?
Little by little, he started slipping back into his old ways.
The training got rougher. Harsher.
And then, one day, Toya had enough.
He didn't fight back. He just turned and walked away.
"You can never be the real father Mom asked you to be," Toya said without looking back. "But at least I know now that I have a real mother—one who was willing to die at your hands that day for us."
The words stabbed deeper than any ice ever could.
Enji lunged forward, but—he stopped.
On his own.
No intervention.
No quirks holding him back.
He stopped himself.
A realization crept in—one that shook him more than any battle ever had.
His own family was rejecting him.
"Where are you going now?" Enji scoffed, voice tense. "To your mother? She's too weak for you to ever get strong enough to wield your flames."
Toya didn't turn around.
"I know. But at least she's strong enough to stand up to you. Something you could never do."
And Enji knew Toya was right.
He failed to face his own flaws every time. He kept running away from them.
He spent his entire career chasing All Might's shadow—for what? To be acknowledged by strangers? To prove himself?
Yet, in the end, even his own family refused to acknowledge him.
All those years spent to be acknowledged by the nation, and yet at his home, he had nothing.
That day, something changed in Enji Todoroki.
When he saw his family living more happily than they ever were with him being constantly on their necks. He could see Rei smiling more than usual. She was much brighter than before. And he had no part in it at all. His children were enjoying being with each other at home, a home in which he was ignored completely.
Strange thing was that despite all of this. Enji was calm. He listened even though he wasn't the one being talked to. He saw them, even though they ignored him. He helped even when he wasn't asked for it.
He knew what he did deserved this kind of treatment, and he knew he didn't deserve forgiveness, so he wasn't asking for it.
But now—he was trying to earn that forgiveness.
And that was the first step toward redemption.
