"What's wrong?"
After she showed signs of abnormality, Zhang Ge naturally leaned forward to support her. However, it seemed that her condition did not improve. The mechanical arm behind her went limp, and the information-integrated visor on her face even popped off with a series of urgent beeps.
"Don't..."
Yolanda seemed to have modified her body's fluid circulation. As she spoke with a trembling voice, struggling to articulate her words, one could see an unusually large amount of translucent saliva clinging between her lips and teeth. Much of it flowed down along the tip of her tongue, which was naturally hanging slightly out of her mouth, or directly overflowed from the side of her pale pink lips.
She seemed to be enduring some intense stimulation, with physiological tears secreting from the corners of her eyes, uncontrollably accumulating and streaming down her cheeks.
Don't?
Oh, I see, she's telling me not to let go.
Zhang Ge, being considerate, immediately decided to risk being attacked and help her to the Adeptus Mechanicus guards at the entrance upon seeing her in what seemed like a cyberpsychotic episode.
Well, she did ask for my help, didn't she? It's definitely not because I was expecting her to suddenly go berserk.
Seeing that she probably couldn't walk on her own, Zhang Ge moved his arm to support her waist and the bend of her legs, lifting her into a horizontal carry.
Yolanda's already strained nerves finally overloaded, her legs twitching and her head tilting as she fainted.
The distance to the entrance wasn't far, and even though Zhang Ge deliberately slowed his pace a bit, it didn't take long before he saw the Adeptus Mechanicus guards again:
"Yolanda, a low-level Enginseer, seems to have run into some trouble."
Not knowing how to describe her condition, Zhang Ge could only vaguely explain.
The two Adeptus Mechanicus guards exchanged a glance, and one of them said:
"Log entry, behavioral directive: Lay her flat on the ground."
Hearing this, Zhang Ge bent down and placed Yolanda flat on the ground, finding a spot on her robe that wasn't yet soaked to wipe off some kind of waste liquid—probably sweat—that had transferred to his fingers from her body.
Since she didn't suddenly lash out, Zhang Ge was greatly disappointed and couldn't be bothered to interfere with whatever treatment came next.
After returning to the hall, he finally spoke:
"So even the Adeptus Mechanicus can suffer from electronic fever. Have you seen this before?"
The latter half of the sentence was asked in a slightly curious tone to the captain of the guard beside him.
The captain had already sensed something from Yolanda's demeanor earlier, but upon further reflection, he found the speculation too absurd. Just as he was trying to convince himself to dismiss that possibility, he was suddenly asked a question, causing him to pause for a moment before hurriedly replying:
"Ah? Ah, this is... the first time I've seen it."
It wasn't that he hadn't witnessed top-tier modified individuals from the family engage in electronic warfare with members of the Adeptus Mechanicus before, but no matter which side was infected with a virus, the symptoms were never like this.
His curiosity not fully satisfied, Zhang Ge didn't delve deeper but instead continued with the unfinished tour.
After a round of inspection, Zhang Ge roughly understood the structure of the place.
This was a massive stronghold with a total of thirty floors, each with varying heights depending on its purpose. The total height reached approximately 140 meters, with 120 meters buried within the interstitial walls between the upper and lower hives, hence "underground," while the remaining 20 meters were directly embedded within the walls themselves.
From the independent generator room, maintenance workshop, and food recycling production facilities to the armory, ammunition depot, as well as the canteen, dormitory, and garage.
Facilities of this scale are sufficient to accommodate at least ten thousand fully armed soldiers for long-term stationing, and this is just one of the numerous regiment bases.
Even if the outside world were completely overrun, this place could independently sustain resistance for a considerable period.
It must be said that when it comes to protecting themselves, the nobles at the pinnacle are quite willing to invest heavily.
Just as Zhang Ge finished his tour and was about to leave, an angry voice tinged with an inexplicable emotion came from behind:
"Stop!
You, who can't learn mechanical repairs, with your low-quality database, incapable of adapting to mechanical structures..."
Zhang Ge turned around, and sure enough, it was Yolanda's voice. Behind her stood several Skitarii, and the Skitarii officer beside her, hearing such harsh words, couldn't help but interject:
"Verification of identification code: result: ally."
Only then did Yolanda realize that she had been a bit too "emotional."The other party is now an ally wielding a Titan, and even if she... she really shouldn't have been so aggressive.
So she visibly swallowed her anger, struggling to suppress her previous emotions, and continued to speak:
"Alright, I'll apologize first. I shouldn't have said that. But shouldn't you also explain why you attacked me with a virus?"
Did Yolanda want an answer herself? Although she did, some more rational part of her reminded her that there was a better way to achieve this goal.
But the rationality that usually held absolute dominance became difficult to suppress a certain impulse after the previous encounter. And what she was unwilling to admit was that upon seeing the other party, that impulse had clearly eased.
So much so that she herself was somewhat confused about her true intentions.
However, Zhang Ge was completely at a loss about what she was talking about... A virus? The most I could pass on to you is probably a cold virus, right?
"What nonsense are you talking about? You suddenly fainted, and then I took you for treatment. I don't ask for anything in return, but you actually use this to slander me?"
"You!"
Ignoring her intentions, Zhang Ge directly turned to the officer and asked:
"Did your treatment detect any foreign viruses?"
The officer glanced at Yolanda and Zhang Ge.
The former seemed to have received a direct communication from the officer. Although she still glared fiercely at Zhang Ge, she stopped speaking. After some time, presumably after the two had finished their discussion, the officer spoke again:
"Consensus: Data anomaly caused the malfunction, ruling out viral factors."
To be fair, the officer also found it fantastical that a simple handshake could complete the entire virus invasion process, leaving no trace or signs of damage.
Achieving the first part might be possible, but the latter... It's like expecting a macro-cannon shell to hit the ground and then repair the crater itself.
He was more inclined to believe it was a coincidental data glitch. And to disrupt a high-ranking Magos's plan for the sake of a low-ranking Tech-Priest's coincidence? Clearly, the latter's priority was much higher.
Of course, although the officer said so, Yolanda still wore an expression of obvious forced restraint. She was determined to uncover this potential threat, even at the cost of sacrificing herself, and so she spoke:
"...May I ask, Colonel Zhang Ge, if I could become your field chaplain?"
The sudden shift in topic caught Zhang Ge off guard, but upon reflection, wouldn't it be just to his advantage to have such an unreliable Tech-Priest in charge of repairing the machines? It would be best to leave everything to her:
"Hehe, of course, no problem. However, Tech-Priest Yolanda, I need you to provide full service."
Upon hearing this, Yolanda clenched her fingers tightly:
"Full service?!
...You!
..."
But her words were still almost squeezed through her teeth as she replied:
"...Fine, but restoring the weakened sensory systems and such will take some time. You wouldn't want..."
"Alright, then go and fix the car I parked at the entrance first.
What sensory systems? What does that have to do with anything?"
"Huh?"
