Chapter 12: Chap 9: A Gamble with fate
---
Prologue: A Hand Worth Playing
The neon lights of the underground casino flickered in the smoky air, casting long shadows over the velvet tables. The place was alive with laughter, the clinking of poker chips, and the desperate whispers of men wagering more than they could afford to lose.
At the far end of the room, in the VIP section, sat a man who never lost.
Renji Arata.
His black suit was crisp, his red tie slightly loosened as he casually shuffled a deck of tarot cards between his fingers. A smirk played on his lips as he leaned back, eyeing his latest opponent—an older man, sweat dripping down his temple as he pushed his last chips forward.
"All in," the man stammered.
Renji chuckled. "Bold. Let's see if fate favors the reckless."
He flipped his cards—four aces.
The old man's face paled.
Renji clicked his tongue. "Unfortunate."
Before the man could protest, two large bodyguards grabbed him by the arms, dragging him away into the darkness.
Renji collected his winnings, stacking the chips with precision. As he pocketed a single gold coin, his Stand shimmered into existence behind him—Fortune's Folly, a golden, ghostly figure adorned with shifting tarot cards.
The Wheel of Fortune card flipped in the air.
Renji smiled.
That's when the casino doors swung open.
Akira Takahashi and his team stepped inside.

Phase One: A Gambler's Invitation
Renji didn't even look up. "Took you long enough."
Akira adjusted his glasses. "You knew we were coming."
Renji smirked. "I always know." He tossed the Hanged Man card onto the table. "Let me guess—you need my help."
Kenji crossed his arms. "We need a strategist. Minh and Cetz won't fall without one."
Daisuke leaned against the bar. "And let's be real, Renji—you love a good gamble."
Renji sighed, rolling a poker chip between his fingers. "True. But why should I bet on you?"
Nao stepped forward. "Because this is the biggest game of your life. Play it right, and you win everything."
Renji chuckled, leaning forward. "Tempting. But I don't make deals without a little fun first."
He snapped his fingers. Fortune's Folly shimmered, and suddenly—
The casino floor shifted.
Tables moved on their own, the walls twisted, and golden mist filled the air. The players, the dealers—they vanished.
The team was no longer in a casino.
They were in Renji's world.
"The game is simple," Renji said, standing. "Survive my luck."
He flicked his wrist. The first card flipped—The Tower.
A deafening crack echoed. The ceiling collapsed.
---
Phase Two: Beating the Odds
"Move!" Akira shouted.
Kenji reacted instantly, slamming his fists into the ground. Titan Soul erupted, creating a shield of solid stone as rubble crashed down around them.
Daisuke sprinted forward, using Gale Phantom to create an updraft, launching himself over the debris.
Renji laughed. "Not bad. Let's raise the stakes."
He flipped another card—The Devil.
A golden chain shot from the mist, wrapping around Hiroshi's arm.
"Damn it—!" Hiroshi gritted his teeth as the chains tightened, pulling him toward a bottomless pit that hadn't been there a second ago.
Akira's Echo Chamber pulsed—he amplified the sound of the chains tightening, sending a shockwave that snapped them apart.
Renji whistled. "Clever."
Nao stepped forward, her eyes glowing crimson. "Enough games."
Blood-red tendrils slithered from her fingertips, lashing out at Renji's deck. Crimson Reverie appeared behind her, its veins pulsing.
But before she could strike—
Renji flipped one final card.
The Fool.
Nao's attack vanished.
Her Stand staggered back, as if confused.
"What—?"
Renji grinned. "The Fool represents unpredictability. It cancels out any action that relies on certainty."
Nao clenched her fists. "So you're saying—"
Renji leaned back. "I just turned your attack into nothing."
Kenji growled. "Then we take you down the old-fashioned way!"
He charged forward, fist raised—
Renji flipped a new card.
The Lovers.
Suddenly, Kenji froze.
The air shifted—Nao and Kenji switched places.
Kenji's punch connected—but with Nao.
The force sent her crashing into a nearby pillar.
Kenji's eyes widened. "What the hell?!"
Renji chuckled. "The Lovers is a swap effect. Fitting, don't you think?"
Akira narrowed his eyes. Renji wasn't just lucky—he was controlling probability itself.
There was only one way to win.
---
Phase Three: Playing the Right Hand
Akira took a step forward. "Renji. Let's settle this with one final move."
Renji smirked. "Oh?"
"You flip a card. I call what it will be."
Renji tapped his chin. "And if you're wrong?"
"We leave. No fight. No allies."
Renji chuckled. "And if you're right?"
"You join us."
Renji grinned. "Now that's a gamble."
The others watched in silence as Renji placed his fingers on a card.
Akira adjusted his glasses.
Renji flipped the card.
The Sun.
Akira exhaled. "I knew it."
Renji's grin faded.
"How?"
Akira smirked. "Because you never let yourself draw a bad card. You always pull what benefits you. And when it came down to it, you knew the Sun meant victory."
Renji was silent for a moment.
Then, he burst out laughing.
"Hah! Takahashi, you sneaky bastard."
He stood, stretching his arms. "Fine. You win."
Kenji raised an eyebrow. "Just like that?"
Renji adjusted his tie. "I don't play rigged games. And you? You just beat my game."
He picked up his deck and tucked it into his coat.
"Let's go hunt some ghosts."
The team had won more than just an ally.
They had won the Gambler of Fate.
