Kage no Densetsu: The Shadowborn's Quest

Chapter 55: Episode 55: The Betrayer Unmasked

As Ren darted through the palace corridors, the weight of the Light Stone pulsating in his hand, the world around him seemed to stretch and warp in strange ways. The shadow power within him hummed in harmony with the Stone's radiant energy. His steps were silent, and the sound of the Light King's fury grew faint behind him. But just as he turned a corner toward the exit, a sudden, powerful force collided with his side.

Ren was sent crashing into a marble wall, the impact rattling his bones. As he struggled to regain his footing, he looked up, only to see the familiar figure of the old sage standing over him, his staff glowing with a dark energy.

"Did you think you could escape so easily, boy?" the sage sneered, his tone dripping with contempt. "You've outlived your usefulness."

Ren glared at the old man, his body tensing as he rose to his feet. "What are you doing? We had a deal."

The sage laughed, the sound echoing off the palace walls. "A deal? Foolish child. You were nothing more than a pawn. I never cared about your journey, or your quest for the Elemental Stones. All I wanted was this—" he said, snatching the Light Stone from Ren's grasp with a swift motion. "The power of the Light Stone belongs to me!"

Before Ren could react, the sage struck him in the stomach with a vicious kick, sending him flying across the room. He coughed, the wind knocked out of him, but there was no panic in his eyes. As the sage turned to gloat over his supposed victory, the figure of Ren that had been kicked shimmered and flickered. Then, in an instant, it dissolved into dark mist.

The sage's eyes widened as realization dawned. "A clone?!"

From the shadows of the palace, the real Ren emerged, his face hardened with a calm, cold determination. "You really thought I wouldn't see this coming?"

The sage whipped around, fury and confusion mixing in his expression as he gripped the Light Stone tighter. "How? When did—?"

Ren cut him off with a low chuckle, stepping forward as his hands darkened with shadows, forming a swirling black gauntlet around his fists. "It was simple. You think I'm stupid? No one in this world offers help without a hidden motive. You were never on our side."

With that, Ren surged forward, his shadow gauntlets glowing ominously. "I planned for this from the beginning, while you were too busy thinking you had control over us!"

The sage barely had time to raise his staff before Ren was on him. The first punch landed square on the sage's chest, a powerful blow that sent him stumbling back. Before he could recover, Ren unleashed a barrage of attacks—each punch charged with dark energy, landing with brutal precision. The old man grunted in pain, his staff flickering with defensive magic as he tried to block the relentless assault.

But Ren was faster, more determined. Each strike seemed to gain momentum, the gauntlets on his fists becoming heavier and more powerful with every punch. The shadows around Ren seemed to pulse, reacting to his anger.

"Take this!" Ren yelled, delivering a crushing uppercut that knocked the sage off his feet. The sage crashed to the ground, gasping for breath, the Light Stone slipping from his grip. It skidded across the floor, stopping just inches from Ren's feet.

But before Ren could reach down and grab it, his clone—still lurking in the shadows—emerged and deftly snatched the Light Stone, tossing it back to Ren.

The sage, lying on the ground, raised a trembling hand toward Ren, trying to form a spell. "You… you're nothing… without me…"

Ren looked down at him, his eyes narrowing with disdain. "Without you? I was never with you in the first place." He raised his fist again, the dark gauntlet forming a swirling mass of energy around it. "You tried to use us for your own gain, but you underestimated me. You underestimated all of us."

With a final, devastating punch, Ren sent the sage crashing through the marble floor, the impact shattering the stone beneath him. Dust and debris filled the air as the old man lay motionless, his staff shattered beside him.

Ren stood over the fallen sage, his breathing heavy but controlled. He looked at the Light Stone now firmly in his grasp, and for a brief moment, a sense of triumph washed over him. But he knew this wasn't the end. The sage had betrayed them, but Ren had learned an important lesson from this battle: there would be more enemies, more betrayals, and more powerful forces to face.

He turned, walking away from the rubble, the Light Stone in hand. As he emerged from the palace, the faint sounds of the bustling city outside greeted him. Shigan and Sakayanagi were waiting for him at the edge of the city, their faces marked with worry.

"What happened?" Sakayanagi asked, her blue flames flickering in her hands, ready for a fight.

Ren glanced back at the palace, where the ruins of the battle still lingered. "The sage was never on our side," he said grimly. "He wanted the Light Stone for himself."

Shigan gritted his teeth, the ki energy around him flaring in frustration. "We should have known."

Ren nodded. "I knew he would try something, so I made sure we were prepared."

Sakayanagi sighed in relief. "I'm just glad you're okay."

Ren offered a small smile, but his mind was already elsewhere. The Light Stone had been secured, but now they were one step closer to their goal, and the path ahead was only going to get more dangerous.

As they regrouped, Ren couldn't shake the feeling that the next part of their journey would be even more perilous. The betrayal of the sage had left a bitter taste in his mouth, but it had also made him more determined than ever.

Together, they walked into the city, their mission far from over, but their resolve stronger than ever.
