Kage no Densetsu: The Shadowborn's Quest

Chapter 57: Episode 57: Into the Heart of the Wilderness

Ren's eyes fluttered open, his head pounding as he pushed himself off the forest floor. He could still feel the echo of the crash in his bones, the weight of exhaustion pulling at him. Slowly, he sat up, taking in the scene around him. Shattered metal and scraps of their ship lay strewn across the ground, tangled with fallen branches and moss. A faint smell of smoke hung in the air.

Nearby, Sakayanagi groaned as she sat up, dusting leaves from her shoulders, while Shigan blinked groggily, rubbing his temples.

"When… when are we going to get a real break?" Sakayanagi muttered, looking at their surroundings with a weary smile.

Ren gave her a wry smile as he stretched his arms. "We'll take one as soon as we can find a safe place. This territory is a mess—half of it's probably off-limits with poisonous gases or worse."

Shigan nodded, consulting their map. "Yeah, this forest is marked with dangerous terrain all around—poisonous gas pockets here, quicksand traps there… and we're in predator territory. Only clear path forward is right through them."

The trio shared a look before heading toward the edge of the clearing to find a secure area for camp. After a short hike, they found a small, sheltered grove surrounded by thick trees. It was quiet here, the faint sounds of chirping insects and distant rustling creating a backdrop of nature's song.

"Let's set up here," Ren said, gathering wood for a fire. "This place is good for shelter, and we'll need food and rest to face whatever's coming."

The group split up to gather materials: Ren gathered wood and made the fire, Sakayanagi found a few wild vegetables and herbs nearby, while Shigan went in search of anything that looked safe enough to cook.

Once the camp was set up, they placed a few barriers of branches around their makeshift shelter. Ren quickly used his shadow power to summon a perimeter guard—a small shadow creature that would alert them to any danger.

Sitting around the crackling fire, Shigan set a pot on the flames, tossing in the vegetables and a couple of wild mushrooms. Ren handed over a few fruits he'd found, hoping they were edible, while Sakayanagi checked their limited supplies.

After an hour, the pot's contents had become a warm stew, sending an aroma that reminded them of simpler times before they'd entered the Nature Kingdom. The three of them ate quietly, grateful for the warmth and the meal.

As they finished, Shigan glanced over at the forest ahead, a dense stretch of trees and twisted roots that seemed to pulsate with life. "Once we go through that, there's a swamp, right?" he asked, studying the map.

"Yep," Sakayanagi said. "Then we're into the territory of the Nature Kingdom. We'll have to keep to the marked paths to avoid gas pockets. Otherwise, it's predator territory. Quick thinking, speed, and strength—those are going to be our only tools."

Ren nodded. "Let's get as much rest as we can tonight. Tomorrow's going to be intense."

One by one, they settled down in the shelter, the crackling of the fire and the hum of the forest lulling them into sleep. They knew tomorrow would be a trial, but tonight, at least, they had each other's company and the warmth of their small camp.

To be continued…
