Kage no Densetsu: The Shadowborn's Quest

Chapter 58: Episode 58: The Path of Forgotten Ruins

Morning dawned gently over the forest, casting warm rays across the camp as the trio woke and stretched. The night's rest had restored them, though the looming challenges ahead weighed on their minds. Ren retrieved their tattered map, spreading it out on the ground for them to study the best route through the Nature Kingdom's dangerous terrain.

Just as they were debating which direction to take, a blur of movement shot past them. Before they could react, the map was gone, snatched from right under their noses. Ren whirled around, catching a glimpse of a figure—a bandit-like person wrapped in earthy-colored rags—darting through the trees.

"Hey! Get back here!" Ren shouted, charging after him. Sakayanagi and Shigan followed close behind, but the thief was too quick, slipping easily between the trees and vanishing into the depths of the forest. In minutes, they had lost him completely.

Panting, Shigan shook his head in frustration. "Great. So much for having a guide."

Sakayanagi sighed, crossing her arms. "Alright, let's think. We'll have to rely on memory—whatever we can recall from the map."

Ren thought back, picturing the landmarks and routes marked. They remembered some details—enough to head in what seemed like the right direction—but without precise guidance, their path felt uncertain.

As they trekked through the dense underbrush, dodging vines and stepping carefully around strange-looking plants, they came upon an unexpected sight. A clearing opened up before them, revealing a circle of ancient ruins—seven stone structures, each carved with intricate symbols. They stood tall and worn with age, arranged in a perfect circle as if marking some forgotten ritual site.

"What… is this place?" Sakayanagi murmured, eyes scanning the ruins.

Shigan moved closer to one of the stones, running his fingers along the symbols etched into its surface. "These look old, really old. But I can't read any of this."

Ren took a step forward, his mind turning with ideas. Without the map, they had no way of knowing if this place was marked or significant, but something about the ruins felt powerful, like they were in the presence of an ancient secret.

Ren extended his hand, summoning a small shadow creature. It sprang to life, hovering by his side with an alert expression.

"I'm going to leave this here," Ren explained. "If we get lost or separated, I can teleport back to it. We'll at least have a landmark."

The shadow figure nodded, anchoring itself to the spot. Ren gave it a quick nod in return, feeling a faint comfort knowing they had a way back if things went awry.

With that, the trio moved onward, plunging deeper into the dense forest of the Nature Kingdom. The canopy above thickened, shrouding them in shadows, as unfamiliar sounds echoed from every direction. They had no map, no clear direction, only the faint hope that their instincts and scattered memories would guide them.

The air felt heavier, laced with the ancient energy of the forest, as they pressed on. Uncertain but undeterred, they prepared themselves for whatever trials awaited in this untamed land.
