Kage no Densetsu: The Shadowborn's Quest

Chapter 62: Episode 62: Taking a Break

As the group ventured deeper into the hidden town beneath the Great Canopy, they marveled at its unique blend of natural architecture and subtle magic. Homes and shops were carved into the trunks of massive trees or nestled within enormous hollowed-out roots. Bioluminescent vines glowed softly, serving as both decoration and illumination.

Kaelen led them toward a modest housing district. "If we're going to stay here for a while, we'll need a base of operations. It's safer than wandering around aimlessly."

Ren nodded. "Agreed. We need to regroup and plan our next steps properly."

The House of Perks

After some searching, they found a quaint treehouse for sale. The structure was suspended high above the ground, connected by sturdy wooden bridges and a spiraling staircase that wrapped around the tree trunk. It had a charming, earthy design: walls made of living wood that pulsed faintly with a greenish hue, and a roof covered in soft moss that glistened under the faint glow of the bioluminescent canopy.

Inside, the house was surprisingly spacious.

Four Bedrooms: Each room had a unique theme. Ren's room had dark wooden panels with shadowy carvings that seemed to shift when viewed from different angles. Sakayanagi's room had soft, warm hues of orange and red, with a fireplace etched into the wall that glowed faintly without burning. Shigan's room featured natural tones and a small meditation nook surrounded by miniature bonsai trees. Kaelen's room had walls that resembled a lush forest, with real plants growing from the corners.A Communal Living Area: The centerpiece of the house was the living room, featuring a large circular table and chairs carved from the same tree as the house. A vine-covered chandelier hung above, casting a soft, magical light.Kitchen with Perks: The kitchen was perhaps the most extraordinary feature. Shelves and cupboards automatically restocked themselves with fruits, vegetables, and basic ingredients as soon as they ran low. A rune etched into the countertop glowed faintly, providing an endless supply of fresh water.

Sakayanagi ran her fingers over the rune, her eyes wide with amazement. "This… is incredible. It's like the house knows what we need."

Kaelen smirked. "That's one of the perks of living in the Nature Kingdom. Almost everything here comes with a perk—houses, tools, even clothing. The kingdom is infused with life energy, so everything resonates with the magic of the land. But," he added, his tone serious, "the one thing you can't rely on are perks for food you buy outside. That's always a separate deal."

Shigan raised an eyebrow. "Why's that?"

Kaelen shrugged. "It's part of Oranos's control. He ensures food supplies are tied to the kingdom's central trade network. It's one more way to keep people dependent on him."

Settling In

Ren placed his sword against the wall of his room and lay on the bed, sighing deeply. "This place feels almost too good to be true."

"It is," Kaelen said from the doorway. "Don't get too comfortable. The kingdom's beauty hides its dangers. Oranos's influence reaches farther than you realize."

Sakayanagi, sitting cross-legged on her bed, looked over at Kaelen. "But why give the houses these perks? Why not keep everyone in constant need?"

Kaelen leaned against the doorframe. "It's a balance. Give people enough to feel content but not enough to make them question the system. The perks are a distraction, a way to make you forget the chains around your wrists."

Ren sat up, his eyes narrowing. "Then we'll break those chains. Starting with the Nature Stone."

Kaelen chuckled softly. "You're ambitious, I'll give you that. But let's take things one step at a time. For now, we rest. Tomorrow, we plan."

The group spent the rest of the evening settling into their new home, the comforting hum of the living wood lulling them into a sense of calm. They shared a simple meal together at the table, laughing and recounting their recent adventures. Despite the looming threats, the house felt like a sanctuary—a rare moment of peace in their chaotic journey.
