Chapter 65: Episode 65: The Heartwood Descent
The ground trembled beneath them as distant explosions rocked the temple. Oranos's forces had arrived.
Kaelen's eyes widened. "They're moving faster than I expected. We need to get out of here—now!"
Ren clenched his fists. "Then we fight our way through."
The Grand Elder raised a hand, his expression calm despite the growing chaos. "No. Fighting here will only bring destruction to the temple and the people within."
The elder pressed his palm against the cavern wall, and the roots coiled away, revealing a hidden tunnel. "This passage leads directly to the entrance of the Heartwood. It will be dangerous, but it is your best chance."
Sakayanagi's flames flickered around her hands. "What about you? Oranos will know you helped us."
The Grand Elder smiled faintly. "I have lived through many storms. Go."
With no time to argue, they dashed into the tunnel. As soon as they passed through, the elder sealed the entrance behind them with a wave of his hand.
Into the Depths
The passage was narrow, the walls pulsing with faint green energy. The deeper they traveled, the stronger the sensation of life force surrounding them. The air felt alive, thick with unseen energy.
Kaelen, leading the way, touched the living walls. "The Heartwood is unlike any place in the kingdom. It shifts, reacts, and judges those who enter."
Ren raised an eyebrow. "Judges?"
Kaelen nodded. "Only those who are truly connected to nature can navigate it. Otherwise, the forest itself will reject them."
Shigan scoffed. "Great. A sentient forest that can decide to kill us."
Sakayanagi crossed her arms. "Then we just have to make sure it doesn't."
The Guardian's Challenge
After what felt like hours, they arrived at a vast underground chamber. A massive tree, ancient beyond reckoning, stood in the center. Vines wrapped around its colossal trunk, and in its hollowed core, a faint green light shimmered.
"The entrance to the Heartwood," Kaelen whispered.
As they stepped forward, the ground quaked, and the vines twisted, forming into a towering humanoid figure. Its glowing eyes bore into them, and a deep, resonating voice filled the chamber.
"Only those worthy may enter."
Ren smirked. "Figures. There's always a test."
The guardian raised its arm, and the vines lashed out at them.
Shigan reacted first, dodging as he fired an energy blast at the guardian's chest, but the attack barely made it flinch. Sakayanagi followed with a wave of blue flames, scorching the vines, but they regenerated instantly.
Ren summoned his shadows, sending them forward, but the guardian swept its massive arm, scattering them like leaves.
Kaelen's eyes narrowed. "We can't just fight it. We have to prove ourselves."
Ren dodged another attack. "And how do we do that?"
Kaelen turned to the tree. "We show we are part of the cycle. We must give, not just take."
Without hesitation, Kaelen knelt and placed his hands on the ground, channeling his energy into the earth. The vines hesitated.
Sakayanagi glanced at him, then followed, pressing her palm to the soil, letting her flames die down.
Ren sighed, placing a hand on the tree's bark. His connection to his shadows wavered slightly, but he let them recede.
The guardian's glowing eyes softened. The vines loosened, and the massive figure slowly stepped aside.
"You may pass."
The Path Ahead
As they stepped forward, the tree's hollow glowed brighter, and the world around them shifted. The air thickened with power, and the ground beneath their feet pulsed like a heartbeat.
Ren glanced at his companions. "No turning back now."
Kaelen took a deep breath. "The Nature Stone is waiting."
And with that, they stepped into the Heartwood.
To be continued...
