Chapter 64: Episode 64: The Secrets Beneath the Temple
The Grand Elder's Temple was unlike anything they had seen before. Thick roots twisted around the massive structure, pulsing with faint green energy. The air inside smelled of damp earth and ancient wood, and faint golden lights floated like fireflies, illuminating the carved wooden walls.
The group moved carefully through the temple's grand halls, their disguises holding up as they passed by temple scholars and guards. At the far end of the corridor, an enormous wooden door stood guarded by two figures clad in living armor, their spears humming with energy.
Kaelen whispered, "That door leads to the Grand Elder's chamber. If he knows where the Nature Stone is, he'll be inside."
Ren smirked. "Then let's introduce ourselves."
As they approached, one of the guards raised a hand. "Halt. The Grand Elder is in deep meditation. None may enter."
Shigan stepped forward. "We carry an urgent message regarding Oranos's rule."
The guards exchanged glances, clearly uncertain. Before they could respond, a deep, aged voice resonated from behind the doors. "Let them through."
The doors groaned open, revealing a vast chamber within the heart of the ancient tree. The Grand Elder sat atop a throne of twisted roots, his long beard flowing like silver vines, his eyes sharp despite his age.
He studied them carefully. "You are not who you appear to be."
The camouflage leaves burned away, revealing their true identities.
"I suspected as much," the elder mused. "Kaelen, you return, but not alone. Speak, before Oranos senses your presence."
The Grand Elder's Warning
Kaelen stepped forward. "We know Oranos is searching for the Nature Stone. He's deceiving the kingdom, draining its life energy. We need to find the stone before he does."
The elder sighed, his gaze heavy with burden. "And what would you do with it? Will you claim its power for yourselves?"
Ren met his eyes. "We're gathering the elemental stones to restore balance—not to hoard power."
The elder was silent for a moment, then rose from his throne. He motioned for them to follow. "Come. There is something you must see."
The Hidden Chamber
The Grand Elder led them through a hidden passage behind his throne. The deeper they went, the more the air thickened with an ancient presence. The tunnel opened into a cavern filled with glowing roots stretching in every direction, surrounding a massive stone tablet covered in ancient script.
Kaelen's eyes widened. "This… this is a Verdant Cipher."
Ren frowned. "A what?"
Kaelen touched the markings. "An ancient Ecodian text. It tells the story of the Nature Stone's true resting place."
The Grand Elder nodded. "The Nature Stone does not lie in any temple or shrine. It is buried deep within the Heartwood—a living labyrinth beneath the kingdom. Only those who can read the cipher can navigate its depths."
Sakayanagi crossed her arms. "So we have to go underground, into a maze no one has ever survived?"
The elder nodded grimly. "And Oranos will do anything to stop you."
A Race Against Time
Ren clenched his fists. "Then we don't have a choice. We're going into the Heartwood."
Kaelen traced the final symbols on the stone. "We don't have much time. If Oranos figures this out, he'll send his forces after us."
The Grand Elder placed a hand on Kaelen's shoulder. "May the forest guide you."
The moment they turned to leave, the temple shook violently. Outside, the sounds of shouting and battle filled the air.
Shigan's eyes narrowed. "We've been found."
Ren smirked. "Then let's make this quick."
