Chapter 5: Chapter Four: Smoke and Sparks
Three years passed at the Monastery of Spinjitzu, and both Rudra and Cinder grew into formidable warriors under Master Wu's guidance. The serene mountains became their training grounds, and the ancient halls of the monastery echoed with the clash of blades and the steady rhythm of breathing techniques.
Cinder had come a long way since his first days at the monastery. Rudra, taking on the role of both mentor and brother, had devoted himself to teaching Cinder the art of Total Concentration Breathing—a discipline that required unwavering focus and precise control over one's body and mind. Together, they developed a unique breathing style tailored to Cinder's elemental power: Smoke Breathing.
"Smoke is fluid," Rudra explained one morning as they stood on the monastery's training platform, surrounded by wisps of mist and rising sunbeams. "It obscures and distracts, but it can also protect and overwhelm. Each form of Smoke Breathing should reflect that duality. Let's try the first form again."
Cinder gripped his katana tightly, his chest rising and falling in a steady rhythm. He exhaled sharply, black smoke spiralling around him like a living shroud. "First Form: Enshrouding Veil!" he called, his movements swift and deliberate as he vanished into the smoke, reappearing behind a wooden training dummy to deliver a precise strike.
Rudra nodded in approval. "Good. Your control is improving. But remember, it's not just about attacking. Smoke Breathing requires adaptability—offence and defence in perfect harmony. Let's spar."
They took their stances, blades gleaming in the morning light. Rudra activated his own breathing technique, Wind Breathing, and the air around him seemed to ripple with invisible force. The clash of their swords filled the air, each strike accompanied by bursts of smoke and gusts of wind. Cinder's smoke curled and danced around Rudra's attacks, while Rudra's wind dispersed the smoke, creating a dynamic and unpredictable battle.
"Second Form: Smokescreen Assault!" Cinder shouted, releasing a dense cloud of smoke that obscured his movements entirely. Rudra closed his eyes, relying on his heightened senses to anticipate the attack. "Wind Breathing: Fourth Form—Rising Gale!" he countered, sweeping his fans in a wide arc that cleared the smoke in an instant.
Their sparring was interrupted by the sound of Master Wu's staff tapping against the stone floor. The two warriors halted, bowing respectfully as their teacher approached.
"You've both made remarkable progress," Wu said, his voice calm yet commanding. "But there is more to your journey than mastering your own abilities. The balance of Ninjago depends on unity, not just individual strength."
Wu gestured for them to follow him to the monastery's central chamber. There, he unfurled an ancient map, its edges worn with age. "The Elemental Masters of Fire, Lightning, Earth, and Ice are out there, unaware of their destinies. It is your task to find them and bring them here. Only together can the balance of Ninjago be preserved."
Rudra and Cinder exchanged determined glances. "We'll find them, Master Wu," Rudra said.
Cinder nodded, his usual playful demeanour replaced by a rare seriousness. "Where do we start?"
Wu traced his finger across the map, pointing to various regions. "The Fire Master resides in the volcanic lands to the south. The Lightning Master lives in the stormy archipelago to the east. The Earth Master guards the mines in the western mountains, and the Ice Master roams the frozen tundra of the north. Your journey will not be easy, but I have faith in you both."
As they prepared to depart, Rudra turned to Cinder. "Ready to put Smoke Breathing to the test?"
Cinder grinned, his confidence renewed. "Let's show the world what smoke and wind can do."
With their swords at their sides and their bond stronger than ever, the two warriors set off on their next adventure. The wind carried them forward, and the smoke trailed behind, a reminder of the challenges they had overcome and the ones that lay ahead.
