Chapter 8: Game
That same evening, I shared everything that had happened in the group chat. And I didn't have to wait long for a response.
"Really? Knight????" Rika asked almost immediately.
"Yeah, can you believe it?"
"Lol. So it's like another confession? You're in your popular phase!"
"Isn't that romantic?"
"I think it's adorable!"
As I was about to send the next message, a text appeared on the screen, "Hana is typing..."
"Knight?" her message read.
"Yes! And I'm going to find them!" I said.
"Are you serious?" she asked.
"Of course I'm serious! Why are you so surprised? Don't you think it's super romantic?"
"Romantic? The whole knight thing? Honestly, it sounds a little cheesy," Hana said. "What's so romantic about it?"
"Oh my God, you don't get it! I've always loved stories like that! Knights and princes and all that! I thought you knew!"
I sighed dreamily, pressing my hand to my chest, even though she couldn't see me.
"You're on my side Rika, right? It's super romantic, right?" I asked.
"Hmmm... I can understand the appeal. Knights and princes! Like something out of a fairy tale, right?" she replied.
"Exactly! See, Hana? Rika gets it!"
"I still don't think it's anything special," Hana replied dryly.
"Are you serious? I thought even you would be interested this time!" I said.
"What can I say? I just don't see anything super romantic about it," she said.
"Eh, you just don't know anything about romance," I said. "See Rika? That girl is totally boring."
"Oh... no, no. That's not the point here. You see, Rika... This girl's heart can skip a beat over anything. Like, literally! She's always been like that. Imagine reacting like that to an anonymous love letter?" Hana said.
"I see, I see... So she is like that, huh," Rika said.
I couldn't believe it.
"Rika? What is this? You're supposed to be on my side!"
"Sorry, sorry," she replied, sending a laughing emoji. "It's just so much fun to finally talk about these things with you two, so I wanted to tease you a little! But I really want to hear more! So you didn't get a chance to talk to that 'knight'?"
I guess it was just an exciting game for her. Well, it was a game for me as well.
"Hahahaha, well yeah, but, like I said, they just ran away, can you believe that?" I said.
"Maybe they were just embarrassed that you caught them red-handed? You said the letter slipped out of their hands, right?"
"Yeah, lol, they ran away without even noticing! And they didn't even leave their name on the letter. You know, I'm pretty sure whoever wrote this letter is a complete coward! That's why I'm going to find them!"
"Are you really that interested in who wrote the letter?" Hana asked.
"Of course I am!"
"You're crazy..."
"What?"
"I mean, it's just a useless letter. Why are you overreacting?"
"Hey! Hana! Weren't you the one asking for romantic advice in the chat group the other day? Remember?? Overthinking a simple date! And now you call me crazy? You f*cking hypocrite!"
"That's a completely different thing. They were practical questions. I was asking for advice. And don't forget, the advice wasn't for me, remember? You, on the other hand, are talking about the knight as if you were in a fairy tale."
"Come on, don't pretend that the advice you asked for wasn't for you. The more I listen to you, the more I think it was! You probably found a boyfriend and are hiding it," I said.
"Really? Hana??" Rika asked.
"What are you talking about? Of course not," Hana replied. "You're the one who's too obsessed with romance, not me. That's all you think about."
"Ah... So you're saying I'm too easy?"
"What the hell? Where did you get that from? I never said that. Sometimes you come to the strangest conclusions."
"Then what did you mean, hmmm?"
"I meant that you should be more selective with your dates. Remember that cute boy in middle school? Why did you reject him?" Hana asked.
"What boy? There was another boy?" Rika asked.
"Hana, what are you doing? You keep bringing up unrelated things! Are you doing it on purpose? Rika won't be able to sleep until she's squeezed all the answers out of us. Rika, there was no other boy! He was interested in me and I wasn't, end of story," I replied.
"But you did say yes to another guy and then broke up with him because he turned out to be an asshole. And don't act like you're not excited to talk about romance right now. The only thing on your mind is romance, you can't think about anything else," Hana said.
"Stop lecturing me, you hypocrite," I said.
"Fine... Whatever you say, dumbass," she replied.
"Is that all you have to say, you boring b*tch?" I asked.
"What else do you want me to say?"
"Well, instead of lecturing me, you should think about your love life. Right, Rika?"
"Rika, don't listen to her," Hana said.
"Rika, use your moment," I said. "Ask this idiot what right she has to judge me when she has no love life herself?"
"Shut up stupid. Your jokes are so repetitive it's not even funny. We've gone over this many times already. And anyway. Who are you to tell me that? I'd rather have no love life than date a scumbag," she said.
"So? Your point?"
"I mean you should've given that nice guy a chance. I personally would have."
"Oh, you would have?"
"Yeah, I definitely would have."
"Then find him and ask him out!"
"Are you serious right now?"
"Of course I'm serious. Go out and date someone yourself instead of judging me!"
"I wasn't judging you. I just wanted you to find a normal person."
"Okay, okay, Mom! Since you want me to find a normal guy. The knight seems nice. So shy even!!!"
"What if he's not?"
"You're being hypocritical again."
"I'm not being hypocritical. I'm just worried about you as your friend. He might turn out to be some kind of scumbag, who knows?"
"Oh, so you're worried about me? You're my sweetheart."
"Shut up."
"Rude."
"And you're cringe," Hana said.
"You're so boring," I said. "You know? I'm going to find out who wrote that letter, and you won't be able to stop me! So shut up!"
"Meh..."
"By the way, how will you find them?" Rika asked.
"I've already thought about that. It has to be someone from the drama club, right? After all, they were wearing a knight's costume. That makes sense. I heard they're doing a play or a short movie or something," I said.
"Oh! That's right! Why didn't I think of that? It's so obvious. You're a genius!"
"I know, right? Considering that, I think it will be pretty easy to find out who it was," I said.
"Uh... But do you really think that's a good idea, Emi?" Hana finally asked.
"Of course," I replied. "I don't see anything wrong with it. Why?"
"I don't know... He didn't want you to see his face, did he? Maybe he's really shy," she insisted. "Don't you think so, Rika?"
"Hmmm, I see what you mean. Since they didn't write their name in the letter, it's like they didn't need an answer, right? It almost feels like they just wanted to let their feelings out..." Rika replied.
"Yeah, I think so too," Hana agreed.
"Or they're just a coward," I said. "Whatever! It's no use trying to talk me out of it! I don't care if they don't even need an answer! I'm really going to find them!"
"Wow, you're really serious about this, haha," Rika said.
"Of course I'm serious!"
"I think that's a bad idea," Hana said.
"Oh, Hana, you're always like that. If they were so shy, why did they confess at all? You know, if they wanted to say those words to me, they should've said them to my face. I don't care if they're a coward, I need to know who it was! And besides, maybe it wasn't a boy, but a girl!"
"A girl??" Rika asked.
"Yes!"
"What makes you think that?" Hana asked.
"Well, I just thought maybe it's that girl I was telling you about today, remember? When we were in the cafeteria," I said.
"Oh... That girl..." Hana said.
"So are you going to confront her directly? Or will you go to the drama club?" Rika asked.
"Hmmm... I think I'll go to the drama club," I said.
The knight was helping the drama club, so they know exactly who it was. I could just go and ask them who played the knight and get the answer. It would be quick and easy.
But it wouldn't completely satisfy me.
The thing is, if I do it that way, it won't help me get what I really want, which is for them to confess their feelings to my face...
So what should I do?
If I really want the knight to say it to my face, I have to leave them no other choice but to do so. That's why I came up with this idea.
As if she could read my mind, Rika asked, "Are you going tomorrow?"
"Sh*t... It's kind of embarrassing to go alone," I said.
"We can go with you," Rika suggested immediately.
"We literally can't tomorrow," Hana said. "We both have clubs, remember?"
"Oh, yeah, you're right..." Rika said.
That's even better!
"Well... how about the day after tomorrow?" I said.
"Hmmm… Yeah! Hana, we can, right?" Rika asked.
"Yeah, I guess we can..." Hana replied. "But Emi, are you really sure?"
"Yes, I'm 100% sure. I'm really going to find out who it was!" I said.
"You're really determined…, aren't you?" she asked.
"Of course, you have no idea how curious I am! No one is going to stop me!" I said.
"Okay. The day after tomorrow then, right?" Hana asked.
"Yes," I replied.
"Okay then!" Rika said. "Ahhhh I can't wait! I'm also really curious who wrote you the love letter!"
"Lol. I want to warn you in advance, though. Don't forget, this is all just between the three of us. Whatever happens when we go to the drama club, don't mention any confessions or love letters, okay? We should just ask who played the knight, that's all. And even after we find out who it was, I'll talk to them myself. Got it?" I said.
"Okay! Sure! Don't worry! My lips are sealed! I know they were embarrassed, so I won't bother them and I won't tell anyone! I just want to know who they are!" Rika said.
"Okay, then it's settled. We'll go together the day after tomorrow. Until then, don't try to find out who it was on your own, okay? Anyway, I'm going to eat! My mom's calling me. I'll see you later," I said.
"Ok, see you later. I have to go too," Hana said.
"See you later :)" Rika said.
Happy and smiling, I got out of bed, humming a romantic song to myself...
