Chapter 3: Attack
After seeing off Director George Stacy, Luke Field stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, watching the unique NYPD pickup truck leave. He turned around to face Ina Sandra, who was standing behind him, her eyes focused on him. He sighed, "Alright, is there anything else that requires my involvement or decision?"
Ina smiled with satisfaction, "Justin Hammer wants to acquire some shares of Heblon Technologies, or rather, he's willing to trade some shares and resources from Hammer Industries in exchange with us."
"Reject him." Luke shook his head without hesitation. "I'd rather trade with that narcissistic, arrogant Stark guy than get involved with him."
Ina nodded. Although Luke entrusted most of the affairs of Heblon Technologies to her and gave her significant authority, she was smart enough to never make major decisions on her own in crucial matters. Instead, she would always listen to Luke's advice. Even if Luke was, to outsiders, merely a Stark-like research genius who wasn't great at managing a large company, she still respected his decisions. If Luke made a decision on something, she would execute it.
Luke set the goals, and she used her abilities to help and manage the team to achieve those goals.
She enjoyed this process. The two had clear roles, but worked together intimately.
"Tomorrow evening, there will be an insider gathering."
After getting her answer, Ina Sandra skipped the previous issue and flipped through the transparent tablet in her hand to find the next matter that required a decision.
"Do I need to show up?" He frowned.
"Yes!" Ina Sandra responded firmly. There were many things she could defer to Luke on, but that didn't mean she wouldn't argue her case on certain matters. "The big deal with the military is at a crucial point, and since it's our first major collaboration with the military, I think you should show up to entertain them when necessary! After all, in the company, the person who is revered as the monarch of Heblon isn't me, it's you!"
"Sounds a bit sour," Luke chuckled. He of course knew Ina was exaggerating. If the Heblon researchers were devoted to him, considering him the monarch of their research journey, then among the other employees, Ina Sandra—who managed most of the company's affairs, excluding research—was seen as more authoritative.
"I'll go, bringing what they want to see," Luke Field nodded.
…
A military transport helicopter flew over towering mountains, landing at a training ground in a suburban area.
The tailgate opened, and Luke shielded his eyes from the gust of wind that rushed in as the door opened, stepping down from the helicopter. Beside him was Ina, dressed in a gray professional skirt suit, accompanied by a six-person fully armed team.
The Becky Team.
A security team under Heblon Technologies, led by retired Lieutenant Wallace from the military.
There were already some soldiers in uniform standing by the helicopter door, who approached Luke as soon as they saw him.
"Is this the team participating in the test? They look well-equipped." A gray-haired, determined-looking middle-aged man shook Luke's hand, his gaze falling on the Becky Team behind him.
"General Evra, this is the Becky Team, which Heblon Technologies recently formed. It consists of handpicked members from Heblon Technologies's security force, outfitted with latest tech products. They will be one of the most elite and powerful teams," Ina Sandra spoke up.
"I look forward to it." General Evra nodded, forcing a small smile onto his face. "If Heblon Technologies's products are as good as you say, we'll definitely give you an order that will satisfy you."
Although General Evra said he was looking forward to it, both Luke and Ina could hear the skepticism in his tone. However, they didn't offer any explanations or arguments. For these people, no amount of talking was as convincing as seeing things with their own eyes. Even though Tony Stark was currently quite annoying, the remark he made to reporters was indisputable:
"In this business, fame and debate don't make products sell better."
And two hours of testing later, the facts indeed spoke louder than words.
During those two hours, every time the time was reduced, the smile on General Evra's face grew wider, and his sincerity increased. By the time all the tests were completed, his previously stern and rigid expression had softened into a full smile. His attitude toward Luke had become warmer as well. Although his soldiers had been thoroughly outperformed by Luke's Becky Team in every aspect, embarrassing him in front of his men, he knew very well that this wasn't a result of his soldiers' incompetence but rather because the products of Heblon Technologies had boosted the soldiers' abilities far beyond expectations.
In fact, in General Evra's eyes, the performance of the equipment demonstrated by the Becky Team was even more impressive than the self-assessment Heblon Technologies had submitted.
Core helmets + mechanical gloves + sprinting boots = $300,000?
Such a bargain!
General Evra had already started eyeing the military procurement officers nearby, giving them pointed looks.
Expensive?
Not at all!
I want them!
I really want them!
Don't mess this up!
Seeing the military procurement officer awkwardly forced into a corner by General Evra's gaze, Luke and Ina exchanged a smile.
Next, of course, was a delightful time for all.
…
Later that night.
In the car.
Finally escaping from the alcohol-pushing old men who could be considered his grandfather's generation, Luke Field let out a sigh of relief.
Seeing Luke's expression, as though he had narrowly escaped a disaster, Ina Sandra smiled. As his partner, this was a rare sight—one Luke was always trying to avoid.
"Back to Heblon? Or home?" Ina Sandra asked softly.
"Back to Heblon." Luke Field responded immediately. The big military order that had been finalized today had already raised his talent card experience, bringing him closer to unlocking the next stage! This meant it was time for him to draw cards again. He had been eager to do so even during the cocktail party, and the crafty old men had noticed his anticipation, giving him looks of "I know, I understand, being young is so good" as they watched him and Ina.
Ina Sandra's face showed a trace of disappointment, but she still nodded and told the driver ahead, "Back to Heblon."
The convoy started moving, with two cars flanking Luke's car as they headed toward the Heblon Technology Building.
Halfway through, as they passed a relatively isolated road, a gunshot suddenly rang out from ahead. The front windshield of the car was covered in a web of cracks. A sniper's bullet protruded slightly from the cracked glass in front of the driver, clinging to the bulletproof glass, resembling a pimple that had emerged on skin.
