Chapter 15: Chapter 15: Searching for Wolverine
Chapter 15: Searching for Wolverine
"Can I borrow your phone for a moment?"
As the truck started moving again, George immediately asked Gabriela.
Before figuring out how to rescue Tony Stark, he needed to thoroughly understand the history and current state of this world to make more accurate judgments and develop a solid plan.
In this era, the fastest way to gather information was through a smartphone.
"Of course, here you go."
Without hesitation, Gabriela pulled out her phone and handed it to George.
With the phone in hand, George began searching for the information he needed. By the time the truck crossed the Mexican border and the sky began to darken, he finally returned the phone to Gabriela.
"So that's how it is."
The history of this universe wasn't too different from the movie universe, except for the addition of mutants.
According to online news reports, mutants first came to public attention in 1973.
Mystique had attempted to assassinate Bolivar Trask but was stopped, becoming a hero among mutants. Humans gradually began to accept the existence of mutants.
In 1977, Quicksilver broke eight world records in sports competitions, leading to a ban on mutants participating in professional sports.
This conflicted with the movie universe, where Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch were born in 1990. This discrepancy reminded George that he couldn't rely entirely on the movie plots he knew.
Later, the X-Men, as a superhero team, gained widespread popularity, and numerous X-Men comics were published. The comic the children had was one of them.
Many stories were based on real events involving the X-Men, but there were also plenty of fictional elements, such as the so-called "Eden."
In 1983, the Apocalypse incident occurred. Shortly after its resolution, the Westchester incident took place. Professor X suffered a seizure, lost control of his mind, and killed all the X-Men except Wolverine, as well as the mutant students at the school and over 600 innocent humans.
Since then, Professor X had been labeled a "weapon of mass destruction" by the U.S. government and was wanted. Mutants began to disappear from public view.
Now, over twenty years later, most humans had forgotten about mutants, and many of the younger generation saw them as fictional characters from comics.
For some reason, governments around the world had been downplaying the history of mutants, seemingly to prove that governments, not mutant superheroes, were humanity's greatest reliance.
Before 1973, there were almost no news reports about mutants. This explained why Steve Rogers became Captain America in 1943 through the Super Soldier Serum and defeated Hydra.
Back then, Wolverine and Sabretooth were just ordinary soldiers with no fame, Professor X and Magneto were still children, and the Hellfire Club operated in the shadows.
"Have you thought about looking for Wolverine and Professor X, who might still be around?"
By now, George had a rough plan in mind.
Although this universe's history had some differences from what he knew, the general framework remained the same. He couldn't rely entirely on his knowledge, but he also couldn't completely discard the advantages it gave him.
At the very least, the initial reason for Tony Stark's kidnapping was likely still Obadiah Stane's desire to kill Tony and take control of Stark Industries.
However, his telepathic abilities weren't strong enough to extract information about the Ten Rings from Obadiah Stane's mind to locate Tony's prison. He needed Professor X's help.
Professor X, despite his seizures, had improved significantly with medication and was mostly lucid.
He might not be as powerful as before, but simple mind-reading should still be within his capabilities.
After all, he could still communicate with Laura from a distance.
With Wolverine as a tank and his own abilities, rescuing Tony Stark shouldn't be too difficult.
Even though Wolverine was old, he was still a force to be reckoned with when serious. Plus, Gabriela had brought along some temporary mutant-enhancing drugs that could restore some of Wolverine's strength.
Most importantly, both Wolverine and Professor X had extensive experience in planning and executing missions—something George, Gabriela, and the mutant children lacked.
Honestly, in a foreign country, George was just as clueless as Gabriela, if not more so.
"We've thought about it. We've been searching for information about them, but the only lead we have is that someone who looks like Wolverine is working as a driver in El Paso. There's no other information.
And we figured that Professor X is also a wanted criminal, so he might not be able to help us."
Gabriela replied helplessly.
George nodded. In some ways, Gabriela's reasoning wasn't wrong. Wolverine and Professor X were indeed struggling themselves.
"I have a plan. If it succeeds, the children might not need to be controlled by anyone and could live normal lives..."
Without holding back, George laid out his entire plan to Gabriela.
His idea was simple: if Gabriela agreed, he was willing to put in the extra effort to help, seeing it as an investment in the future.
If Gabriela disagreed, he wouldn't force the issue. He wasn't a saint. He would deliver the children to their destination and then leave to carry out his plan, settling down in New York.
Besides, his choice might not necessarily be the best for the children. They might fare better in Canada.
After hearing George's plan, Gabriela fell into deep thought.
She was torn. Honestly, she didn't have much faith in the Canadian government either. Growing up in Juárez, Mexico, she found it hard to trust any government.
But George's plan also carried significant risks.
If George and the others failed to rescue Tony Stark and they missed the deadline with the Canadian government, the children would undoubtedly be captured and killed by the lab.
And would Wolverine and Professor X even be willing to help?
Seeing Gabriela's hesitation, George added:
"If Wolverine and Professor X refuse to help, or if we can't make it back by 5 PM next Friday, you can proceed with the original plan and cross the border into Canada."
Today was Saturday, and there were six days until next Friday. If everything went smoothly, six days should be enough to rescue Tony Stark.
"Alright, George. Thank you so much!"
Gabriela nodded gratefully.
George could have easily left on his own. With his abilities and demonstrated intelligence, escaping the lab's pursuit wouldn't have been difficult.
But he chose to stay and help them, finding a way for them to survive and thrive.
"Don't mention it. In a way, I'm just like them—a lab experiment. I guess I'm their older brother."
George smiled wistfully.
"Actually, based on creation time, you're probably the youngest among them."
Gabriela suddenly laughed, as if remembering something.
George couldn't help but chuckle. It was true—his body had been created less than a year ago, making him the youngest mutant in the lab.
