MHA: A Villain's Leading Wish

Chapter 12: Is This What They Call A Goodbye?

Musutafu was quiet today. No acts of villainy were being committed.

'Strange.'

Even in the darkest alleyways silence seemed to be always present.

Almost the whole night was spent searching for crime.

Finally accepting the thought that there was no novelty today, he returned home.

It's funny how quickly he adapted to being Midoriya's brother. He'd told him almost everything about him.

He talked a little about his childhood and about how his dad died and stories about being homeless.

His work as a vigilante remained a secret.

Midoriya was shocked for a while, but he supported him.

Maybe because he hadn't told him that he killed criminals on a daily basis. Or that he killed his father.

Shinji slipped inside the apartment through the window. He walked into his room and didn't notice the look a certain green haired boy was giving him.

--------

3 years later..

"67, 68, 69." The handstand pushups kept Shinji distracted and unaware of the outside world.

"Yuuji, let's go out for something to eat." Now that his focus had broken, he calmly got out of the position.

"Midoriya, don't you know it's rude to interrupt someone while they're exercising?"

"You've already been at it for three hours, let's get something to eat."

"Hahh" Shinji exhaled slowly before drinking some water. They were currently in the park they'd met for the first time.

This was the usual spot for training and talking about life in general.

Their peace was often interrupted by a blond boy with an explosion quirk.

It was starting to get on his nerves.

He was always picking on Midoriya, but he didn't do anything to defend himself.

"Let's go get some hotdogs like that other time," Shinji said.

"Really hope there's no snowman guy trying to destroy everything this time.

Shinji and Midoriya got their hotdogs before eating in peace.

"Say, Shinji, why don't you take the hero exam with me?"

"I've told you already that I don't want to become a hero. Stop saying this all the time."

Midoriya fell deeply into contemplation.

"What would I have to do for you to at least try?"

"Midoriya, it just doesn't line up with my goals. I want discrimination to disappear from the face of the earth. Being a hero will not help me."

"You're wrong. All heroes save people with a smile on their face."

"You're still acting like a kid. You have to accept there are bad heroes too."

"But-"

"Alright let's stop, we're just going to keep on going in circles."

Midoriya seemed reluctant but accepted in his mind that it was the truth.

They kept eating without saying a word. The sun was starting to go down.

As night fell, they both stood and started heading home.

"The exam is going to be in two weeks from now, do you think I can make it?"

"You're still doubting yourself? You're the one that taught me how to fight. Have some pride in that."

Midoriya looked at the night sky, the stars were looking especially beautiful today.

"I don't want to admit it but All Might's words are starting to sound in my head. They're playing in an endless loop."

"You've already proved to yourself that you're better than that. Just try your best at the exam. I'm sure you'll pass."

"Thanks.." Midoriya seemed to hesitate whether to say what's on his mind or not.

"Shinji, listen to me. I know that you're going out at night. What are you doing out there?"

Shinji tiredly exhaled.

"I was hoping you wouldn't notice. Do you want to know the truth?"

"The truth and only the truth."

"Thing is, I'm actually a vigilante, that's why I don't want to be a hero."

Midoriya's eyes opened widely. "Shinji, that's illegal, you can't do that."

"This is why I didn't want to tell you. I knew you would tell me something like that."

They both stood still. The tension filling the space around them could cut through the air.

A pained expression crept up Midoriya's face.

"If you're still hiding stuff from me then maybe I was wrong thinking we were still friends."

"Midoriya, it's not like that. Let me explain."

"You always keep saying that. I just can't bring myself to trust you anymore."

Midoriya walked away without hearing what Shinji had to say.

'I'm stupid.'

Watching Midoriya's figure keep getting away from him made him think that it was over between them.

'How can I ever come back from this?'

Shinji thought about how he never told Midoriya he'd killed anyone and felt guilty.

'Maybe our friendship was just not meant to be.'

Midoriya finally disappeared from his vision.

He didn't return back to Inko's apartment. He instead decided to stay away from his path.

His transformation was reversed and he took his original form.

A form that he hadn't shown anyone these past few years.

He'd played the brother card for far too long. It was time to take some action and get the work done.

"Goodbye Midoriya. Sorry for everything. Hope you become a great hero one day."
