Sensing Danzo's disappointment, the girl, accustomed to his ruthless demeanor, flinched and hurriedly apologized, "I'm sorry, Father. I disappointed you."
"It's okay, Rekka," Danzo replied, his voice softening. "You are still young, and your chakra reserves are not sufficient yet. It's understandable that you couldn't succeed."
Danzo's rare attempt at a gentle smile made his usually rigid face appear even more unsettling—like someone unused to expressing warmth.
Despite his daughter's shortcomings, Danzo was lenient with her. Rekka had inherited a weaker version of Wood Release, even less potent than Yamato's, but it was enough to keep Danzo hopeful.
After all, with the destruction of the Shimura clan, there were only three members of his family left, including himself. His second son, who lacked Wood Release, was of limited value, leaving Rekka as his only hope.
Once she matured, Danzo planned to transfer his Sharingan to her. He was convinced that with proper guidance, she would become a powerful shinobi.
Just as he was about to offer more guidance, a knock at the door interrupted him.
"Didn't I say no one is allowed to disturb me during training?" Danzo snapped, his frustration evident.
The Root ninja outside responded cautiously, "Lord Danzo, an Anbu operative just arrived with a message from the Third Hokage. He asked me to inform you that Fujiwara Kirito, the one who wiped out the Shimura clan, has returned."
"Fujiwara Kirito?" Danzo froze. A flash of rage flickered in his usually emotionless eyes. "What is that brat doing now?"
"He severely injured Kakashi Hatake, Might Guy, Sarutobi Asuma, and other jonin in the Forest of Death. Afterward, he boldly walked out of Konoha's main gates in front of the Third Hokage and the Anbu."
Danzo's face contorted with fury. "Pathetic. So many of them, and they couldn't stop one man? Why are they still alive? Useless fools!"
Already in a foul mood, Danzo's anger only grew. He lost interest in Rekka's training and quickly gave her instructions to rest before calling out, "Prepare to take me to him immediately."
Danzo left the Root base flanked by two operatives, cursing under his breath. When they reached the Anbu operative waiting for them, Danzo barked, "Tell me everything about Fujiwara Kirito."
The Anbu operative, clearly intimidated, led Danzo and his entourage toward the Hokage Building while delivering a detailed report.
It didn't take long for Danzo to arrive. Even before he entered the room, he overheard the voices of Mitokado Homura and Utatane Koharu.
"I never imagined Fujiwara Kirito would be this powerful," Homura said with a heavy sigh.
"Indeed. And with his knowledge of Konoha's secrets, his threat level surpasses even Orochimaru's," Koharu added.
Danzo sneered and pushed the door open, entering with his cane. "A mere Fujiwara Kirito has left all of you helpless? Hiruzen, Koharu, Homura—it seems you're truly past your prime."
Unlike the visibly aged Sarutobi Hiruzen, Koharu, and Homura, Danzo's use of First Hokage cells had rejuvenated him. However, due to the effects of the Zimu River water he had consumed, his body now exhibited a bizarre mix of masculine and feminine traits.
To make matters worse, Danzo was dressed in a traditional women's kimono. If not for his Adam's apple, anyone unfamiliar with him might have mistaken him for an elderly woman.
Upon seeing Danzo, the room fell silent. Hiruzen, Koharu, and Homura were momentarily stunned.
"Danzo," Hiruzen began, trying to suppress his confusion, "what are your thoughts on the situation?"
Danzo adjusted his kimono and spoke in a low voice, "Since Fujiwara Kirito hesitated to act in Kurenai Yuhi's presence, it's clear that he hasn't completely severed his ties to the past. We should exploit this weakness. Capture Yuhi Kurenai and his former comrades to lure him into a trap."
Danzo's suggestion was met with immediate rejection.
"No!" chorused Hiruzen, Koharu, and Homura.
Hiruzen's refusal stemmed from his desire to protect his legacy. He was already preparing for his end and did not want to tarnish his reputation further. Moreover, angering Kirito could result in devastating consequences, including harm to his grandson Konohamaru and other loved ones.
Koharu and Homura, on the other hand, were simply terrified. Having witnessed Kirito's brutal extermination of the Sarutobi and Shimura clans, they feared he might target their own families next. Unlike Danzo, who had little left to lose, they couldn't afford to provoke such a dangerous man.
"Why not?" Danzo demanded, stunned by their opposition.
Hiruzen spoke firmly, "Kurenai is the daughter of Shinku Yuhi, who served Konoha loyally. She has suffered enough due to Kirito's actions. Sacrificing her would be unjust and counterproductive."
Koharu and Homura nodded in agreement, echoing Hiruzen's sentiments.
Danzo sneered, "Sentimentality has no place here. Who's to say Yuhi Kurenai isn't colluding with Kirito? The same goes for those brats Naruto and Sasuke. They could all be liabilities."
"Enough, Danzo!" Hiruzen slammed his hand on the table. "I called you here to discuss solutions, not to create more problems. Remember, I am still the Hokage."
Danzo glared at Hiruzen but said nothing more. "You'll regret this, Hiruzen," he muttered under his breath.
As the four elders pondered their next move, an Anbu operative burst into the room.
"Hokage-sama, great news!" the operative exclaimed, his voice brimming with excitement.
Even before hearing the message, the elders exchanged hopeful glances.
"Could it be… Jiraiya has returned?" Koharu whispered, voicing the thought on everyone's mind.
"Come in," Hiruzen ordered, motioning for the Anbu to enter.
