Chapter 38: The Inuzuka Clan's Choice
Kuragami Uchiha took Sasuke to the backyard, where he usually practiced archery and lit the corridor lamps.
"What ninjutsu can you use?"
Kuragami Uchiha asked.
"My brother taught me the three basic jutsu before, and I just learned Lightning Style: Lightning Ball a few days ago."
Sasuke replied excitedly when talking about ninjutsu.
"Lightning Ball, huh? Let me see it." Kuragami Uchiha said.
"Yes!"
Sasuke responded eagerly.
His small hands quickly formed seals, and soon, a lightning sphere, over a meter in diameter, appeared in front of them. It flew forward for about seven or eight meters before exploding, momentarily lighting up the dim backyard with a dazzling white light.
After doing all this, little Sasuke looked at Kuragami expectantly, hoping for praise from his teacher.
However, instead of praise, Kuragami Uchiha gave him a firm smack on the top of his head, leaving Sasuke completely confused.
"What the hell, kid? I asked you to use a jutsu, and you decided to blow up my backyard?"
"I'm sorry..." Sasuke muttered weakly.
"Watch closely; this is how you use a Lightning Ball."
After Kuragami finished speaking, he snapped his fingers, and a small, deep blue lightning sphere, only about ten centimeters in diameter, appeared out of thin air.
Although this Lightning Ball was much smaller than the one Sasuke had created, Sasuke could clearly sense that its chakra was far more concentrated.
Then, with just a movement of Kuragami Uchiha's fingers, the small sphere began to orbit around them in a controlled path, leaving Sasuke stunned for a while.
After circling them a few times, Kuragami Uchiha snapped his fingers again, and the blue sphere shot into the sky and exploded like fireworks.
"Amazing."
Sasuke exclaimed in awe.
"You saw that? Practice until you can do the same. Once you can, I'll teach you something new." Kuragami Uchiha instructed.
"Yes!"
Sasuke replied confidently.
Seeing Sasuke's eager smile, Kuragami Uchiha also smiled. This should keep the kid busy for quite a while.
After all, what he just demonstrated required precise Chakra control, something even many Chunin skilled in Lightning Style struggled with. For a beginner like Sasuke, it would take a lot of effort to reach that level.
However, this process of refining his Chakra control would be invaluable. Once Sasuke mastered it, learning other ninjutsu would become much easier.
Moreover, training in precise Chakra control would help temper the boy's personality; after all, Kuragami Uchiha had no patience for the reckless, headstrong version of Sasuke, who constantly ran off to get beaten up in fights.
After Sasuke left, Kuragami Uchiha changed clothes, preparing to head to the training ground for his daily routine.
Before leaving, he instructed: "Keiko, send invitation letters to the Inuzuka and Aburame Clans for me."
"Right now?"
Keiko Uchiha asked. "It's quite late."
"It's fine. I don't think they'll mind." Kuragami Uchiha replied.
"What name should I use to send them?" Keiko asked.
"Send the one to the Inuzuka Clan under the name of the Konoha Military Police Force. As for the Aburame Clan, just use my personal name."
"Understood." Keiko nodded.
… … …
That night, the two clans who received the invitations were not at peace.
The Inuzuka Clan immediately convened a clan meeting upon receiving the letter.
Unlike Uchiha Clan meetings, which barely lasted five minutes before turning into shouting matches and sometimes even physical brawls, the Inuzuka Clan conducted their meetings efficiently.
In a modest room inside their clan's shrine, four people sat around a table, the current Clan Head, Kenshiro Inuzuka, along with three others, a veteran elder and two Jonin, who are the highest-rank ninjas in the clan.
At the center of the table lay the invitation Keiko Uchiha had just delivered.
Kenshiro Inuzuka scanned the room and spoke first: "What do you all think about this invitation?"
"A gesture of goodwill from the Uchiha? That's rare."
The eldest member present, the seventy-five-year-old Seirou Inuzuka, said.
"This new clan head of the Uchiha seems very different from their past clan heads." Kenshiro Inuzuka noted.
"Kaze, you worked with him on a mission before. Can you tell us your impression of him?"
The youngest of the four, Kaze Inuzuka, stroked his chin thoughtfully before speaking. "To be honest... I can't read him at all."
This response made the others frown.
"But."
Kaze continued: "I don't think we would lose out by working with him."
He then summarized the events that had transpired at Orochimaru's base during their previous mission.
"I see... This clan head, Kuragami, is quite the figure." Seirou Inuzuka mused.
"So, should we fully align ourselves with the Uchiha?" Tatsuo Inuzuka, the last Jonin present, asked.
"Not necessarily."
Kenshiro Inuzuka said, picking up the invitation. "Since Clan Head Kuragami sent this under the name of the Konoha Military Police Force, he's leaving us some room to maneuver. Tatsuo, select the twenty most promising newly matured Ninja Hounds and present them as a gift to the Konoha Military Police Force from our clan."
"That's not enough."
Seirou Inuzuka suddenly interjected. "In addition to that, choose a few talented trainers and Ninja Hound handlers from within our clan and have them officially join the Konoha Military Police Force. If possible, negotiate to secure a few permanent positions in the force for our clan members each year."
Kenshiro Inuzuka was surprised. "Elder, wouldn't that make it obvious that we're siding with the Uchiha?"
"If Clan Head Kuragami is showing such sincerity, it wouldn't hurt to show some sincerity in return." Seirou Inuzuka replied.
"This... Elder, isn't this a bit too hasty?"
Kenshiro Inuzuka hesitated.
Normally, the elder was always urging him to be cautious, so why was he suddenly taking such an aggressive stance?
"Kenshiro, do you know why I've always emphasized caution when making decisions?"
Seirou Inuzuka asked, looking directly at him. "It's because, while our clan has a long history dating back to the Warring States Period, we are ultimately just a small clan with a Hidden Jutsu for training Ninja Hounds. Unlike clans with Kekkei Genkai, they have inherent combat power while we have survived by being careful, accumulating enough wealth and influence so that when an opportunity arises, we have something to bet on."
"Three hundred and eighty-one years ago, our ancestors took a chance by siding with the Senju clan, which led to the prosperity of the Inuzuka today. Now, another opportunity stands before us."
Seirou Inuzuka continued.
"Do you have that much confidence in this new clan head?"
Tatsuo Inuzuka asked.
"Call it the intuition of an old man who lived through the Warring States Period."
Seirou Inuzuka chuckled. Then he turned to Kaze Inuzuka. "What do you think?"
"Following Clan Head Kuragami, huh? Doesn't sound like a bad idea."
Kaze grinned. "We've been stuck on the outskirts of village politics for too long. If the Nara, Yamanaka, and Akimichi Clans could rise to power, why can't we?"
