Chapter 523: Chapter 523: The Night of Betrayal

As night fell on the battlefield, the tide of war briefly shifted. The Iron Country's samurai corps entered the fray, and exhausted coalition ninjas were withdrawn for rest and medical attention. Fresh troops replaced them, ready to hold the line against the relentless White Zetsu army.

Yet, despite the changing faces on the battlefield, Uchiha Madara remained unmoved.

To him, this war was a game. Whether White Zetsu advanced or fell didn't matter—what mattered was the attrition. The coalition forces were burning through resources, morale, and manpower, while the White Zetsu army, with its mindless determination, continued to grind them down.

The Coalition's Growing Struggles

Though the coalition forces had the upper hand at the start, their momentum began to wane. The advantages of the White Zetsu army became glaringly apparent.

Unlike human ninjas, White Zetsu had no wounded to care for. There were only the living and the dead. In contrast, the coalition faced mounting logistical challenges: tending to the injured, rotating fatigued troops, and retrieving the bodies of fallen comrades.

In the coalition camp, Kushina carried out her special mission under Shinki's orders. Alongside Pakura, she patrolled the medical department—a critical area vulnerable to infiltration.

Shinki had entrusted her with an essential task: eliminate any White Zetsu disguised as coalition ninjas.

During the Fourth Ninja War in the original timeline, the parasitic White Zetsu had sown chaos, fostering paranoia and mistrust within the coalition. Shinki was determined to avoid such a scenario by proactively rooting them out. With Kushina's sensory abilities and combat prowess, the camp's stability was in capable hands.

Takigakure's Plight

Meanwhile, the battlefield expanded. Takigakure bore the brunt of the fighting as the coalition blocked the White Zetsu army from advancing into their territory. Despite their efforts, the once-peaceful land had become a warzone.

Desperate to protect their village, Takigakure's leader led his ninjas in a fierce counterattack. The more White Zetsu they killed, the less destruction their home would suffer—or so they hoped.

Return to the Command Room

As the four Kage returned to the headquarters for the night, they reviewed the coalition's casualty reports. Onoki, ever the realist, scowled as he scanned the numbers.

"The casualties seem... significant," he remarked, veins bulging on his forehead.

The Third Kazekage nodded grimly. "Even though we've killed many White Zetsu, their numbers are overwhelming. And their strategy has shifted—they're no longer charging recklessly."

The Third Raikage grumbled, frustrated by their lack of intelligence. "These ghosts are a menace. Where did Madara even find so many White Zetsu? And we still don't know if he's commanding them directly."

Shinki offered an explanation. "It's unlikely Madara is commanding them personally. From the data we've gathered, the smarter White Zetsu seem to be leading the army. They're likely coordinating the others, which explains the change in their tactics."

Sharing Konoha's findings about White Zetsu, Shinki continued, "This is a war of attrition. Casualties are unavoidable, but White Zetsu's numbers aren't infinite. If we hold out, we'll deplete them eventually."

The Third Raikage, however, had a different concern. "When will your puppet forces join the battlefield?"

"Not yet," Shinki replied. "First, we need to stabilize the camp. Tonight will be... lively."

The Quiet Before the Storm

As the camp settled into the stillness of night, many ninjas drifted into an uneasy sleep. Even the battlefield itself grew quiet, with the White Zetsu army halting their attacks—a suspicious change in behavior.

But Shinki's warning proved prescient.

Within the camp, betrayal began to unfold.

The Attack Within

A Konoha ninja, dressed in standard combat attire and wearing a Konoha forehead protector, approached his sleeping comrade. A kunai glinted in his hand as he raised it for the kill.

Before the strike landed, a golden flash lit up the tent, and the would-be assassin collapsed to the ground, groaning in pain. His companion awoke in shock, staring blankly at the kunai and the attacker.

From behind the tent, Kushina's shadow clone emerged, humming smugly. "You really thought you could pull that off with me here?" she sneered, stomping on the fallen White Zetsu's body.

Similar incidents erupted throughout the camp. White Zetsu infiltrators, disguised as coalition ninjas, launched surprise attacks on their unsuspecting comrades.

The medical department bore the brunt of these assaults. Parasitic White Zetsu targeted the wounded and exhausted, hoping to sow chaos. But Kushina, supported by her shadow clones and sharp instincts, systematically hunted them down.

The Coalition Reacts

By morning, the extent of the infiltration became clear. At the center of the camp, the four Kage gathered around the subdued White Zetsu infiltrators.

Onoki's expression was grim. "Now I understand what you meant, Shinki. If we hadn't prepared for this..."

The Third Raikage clenched his fists. "These sneaky bastards almost turned the camp into a bloodbath."

Shinki nodded. "We've managed to avoid catastrophe, but this tactic is far from over. White Zetsu are masters of deception, and Madara won't stop at this first attempt."

Tsunade added, "At least now we know how to spot them. Kushina's efforts saved us from complete chaos."

Kushina's patrols had prevented what could have been a devastating blow to coalition morale. Without her vigilance, paranoia and infighting might have torn the camp apart.
