Chapter 135: Chapter 135: A Place with Immense Chakra
On a bright sunny morning, Kirito strolled aimlessly through the streets of Konoha. His thoughts were occupied by Asuma's recent advice: to cherish the people he cared about and not leave regrets behind.
Since Tenten had been promoted to Chunin, she had been busier than ever, throwing herself into missions and training. Her ultimate dream of becoming a "legendary kunoichi" fueled her relentless drive, and she was now aiming for Jounin.
The former dynamic of Team Guy had shifted. Guy often took on high-ranking solo missions, while Tenten and Rock Lee were assigned to different squads to hone their skills. Kirito, meanwhile, remained in the village, serving as a safeguard for Naruto and occasionally assisting with key tasks.
[Compared to them, I really am the king of slackers,] Kirito thought as he cradled the little leopard in his arms.
The recent defeat of Hidan and Kakuzu had brought a temporary lull to the Akatsuki's activities, giving Kirito a rare chance to relax. With Naruto's training progressing well under Yamato's supervision, Kirito finally had some breathing room.
But Asuma's words lingered in his mind.
[No regrets, huh?]
He decided it was time to act on an idea he'd been contemplating for a while: finding a way to grant Tenten a body that could withstand the test of time. His unique physiology granted him a lifespan without limits, but he couldn't bear the thought of experiencing life's cycle of loss repeatedly.
He recalled a method from Urashiki's memories: the elixir of immortality crafted by the Otsutsuki clan using immense chakra. But the process required a vast reservoir of chakra—far beyond what Kirito could generate on his own.
[The chakra needs to come from this world,] he reasoned, recalling how his previous attempts with his own chakra had disastrous results, turning test subjects into towering trees. The only viable sources were tailed beasts or similarly massive energy reserves.
Naruto's Nine-Tails Chakra was out of the question. It would require unsealing the beast, an excruciating and risky process that Kirito wasn't willing to subject Naruto to.
[There must be other sources,] he thought, wracking his brain for places with immense chakra.
Two came to mind: the Zero Tails and the Dragon Vein. The details were fuzzy, but he remembered that the Dragon Vein was tied to a location called Rouran.
Sitting on a quiet bench in a secluded square, Kirito began sketching in the dirt with a branch, mapping out his thoughts.
[Zero Tails was tied to a unique environment, but Rouran… the Dragon Vein is accessible. I need to see if there are any missions related to it.]
Brushing away his sketches, Kirito stood and made his way to the Hokage Building.
At the Mission Assignment Office, Tsunade sat behind a towering stack of mission requests, her face a picture of frustration. Despite Konoha's recovery over the past two years, the number of Chunin and Jounin was still insufficient to handle the demand for high-level missions.
"Good morning, Lady Tsunade," Kirito greeted as he walked in.
Tsunade blinked in surprise. "Kirito? What are you doing here?"
He was known for avoiding missions unless absolutely necessary.
"I'm here to pick up a mission," he said casually, "but I'd like to choose one myself."
Tsunade eyed him suspiciously but decided not to question his motives. She shoved a thick stack of mission scrolls toward him. "Fine, take your pick. In fact, take several."
As Kirito flipped through the scrolls, Tsunade leaned back in her chair, curious. "Why the sudden interest? Don't tell me you're finally feeling guilty about slacking off."
Kirito smirked. "I've got a new idea I want to test, and it involves a huge amount of chakra. I figured I could experiment while completing a mission. Two birds, one stone."
Tsunade nodded, accustomed to Kirito's unconventional methods. "Now that you mention it, there is one mission that might interest you." She rummaged through the pile and pulled out a scroll.
"Recently, the Sand Village sent us a request," she began. "A rogue ninja named Mukade has been spotted near the ruins of Rouran in the Land of Wind. His target is the Dragon Vein—a massive reservoir of chakra sealed there by the Fourth Hokage over twenty years ago.
"The Sand Village doesn't currently have the resources to handle this, so they've asked for our help in eliminating Mukade and securing the Dragon Vein."
Kirito's eyes lit up. "This is exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks, Lady Tsunade."
"Great," she replied. "Then get moving. The sooner this is dealt with, the better."
But as Kirito turned to leave, he paused. "Actually… I'll wait for Tenten to return. I want her to come with me."
Tsunade's jaw dropped. "What?! You're delaying an S-rank mission for your girlfriend?"
Kirito shrugged. "It's not just any mission. I want her to see it too."
Tsunade sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. "Fine. But don't take too long, or I'll send someone else."
Later that day, Kirito sat in the village square, waiting for Tenten's return. In his mind, plans for Rouran and the Dragon Vein were already forming.
[If I can tap into the Dragon Vein's chakra, I'll finally be able to create the elixir. And who knows? Maybe there's more to Rouran than just the Dragon Vein.]
