Chapter 154: Chapter 154: Infiltrating the Hidden Rain Village
In a certain apartment in Konoha, Kirito, sitting alone on the bed, slowly closed his eyes after confirming Jiraiya had obediently returned to the hotel to rest.
Not long ago, Kirito, who had just returned to his apartment, reflected on the Q&A in the izakaya earlier and felt a gnawing sense of foreboding.
After all, Jiraiya had been adamant about wanting to end his grievances with Nagato alone, repeatedly forbidding Kirito from intervening. Knowing Jiraiya's headstrong personality, Kirito suspected he might attempt to sneak into the Hidden Rain Village alone to prevent interference.
Thankfully, it seemed that Kirito's responses had reassured him. Jiraiya chose not to leave Konoha in secret but instead decided to honor their agreement: to meet at the village gate early the next morning and travel to the Hidden Rain Village together.
Breathing a sigh of relief, Kirito lay down on the hard, flat bed and reached toward the empty space beside him. From an opened spatial door, he pulled out a chubby little creature: little leopard.
Seemingly annoyed by the disturbance, the little leopard squirmed in Kirito's hand, shaking its pudgy body and flicking its plump tail with irritation.
"Miss me?" Kirito asked with a smirk. In response, the little leopard covered its face with its tiny paw, clearly unimpressed.
Since consuming Urashiki, the little leopard had become increasingly independent over the past two years. Initially, it would become aggressive if it couldn't sense Kirito's presence, attacking any unfamiliar aura without hesitation.
Now, while still full of energy, it had developed a degree of rationality, controlling its actions and thriving even when apart from Kirito. Lately, Kirito had been leaving the little leopard in the "Forest of Death" within Konoha.
The ninjas responsible for supervising the forest, upon learning the leopard was Kirito's pet, didn't raise any objections to its presence.
Of course, Kirito didn't let the leopard act recklessly. He strictly forbade it from using abilities like the "Tailed Beast Bomb" or techniques related to the Rinnegan, restricting it to taijutsu only. More importantly, it was forbidden to "transform into a tree."
After some time observing the leopard's behavior in the forest, Kirito confirmed it posed no issues. Thus, the Forest of Death became an exclusive "nursery" for the little leopard.
This time, Kirito brought it back mainly to check on its progress and remind it of any necessary guidelines.
Through their telepathic bond, Kirito could watch the leopard's recent activities as if viewing a documentary, passing the otherwise dull moments before sleep.
"Let's see if you've made any new friends..." Holding the leopard close, Kirito placed a hand on its forehead. Man and pet lay quietly on the bed, like sculptures.
The Land of Rain, home to the Hidden Rain Village, lies at the intersection of the Fire, Earth, and Wind nations. Consequently, during past ninja wars, it often became a battleground for these neighboring powers.
Enduring near-constant rainfall, the people of the Land of Rain, and the Hidden Rain Village's ninja, who had suffered greatly from war, referred to their country as "the land that weeps," symbolizing their disdain for the devastation of war.
Heavy rain poured down over the Hidden Rain Village once more.
From a small lake, an inconspicuous toad emerged, scanning its surroundings through the downpour to ensure no sentries were watching. Once the coast was clear, the toad paddled toward a commercial street and opened its mouth.
With a wet sound, an arm reached out, followed by the emergence of a middle-aged man with long white hair: Jiraiya.
Using chakra to repel the rain from his body, Jiraiya surveyed the street and smugly declared his infiltration mission a success.
Moments later, another figure emerged from the toad's mouth. Kirito, holding an umbrella, avoided being drenched by the rain.
"How about it? This infiltration is flawless," Jiraiya said proudly.
Kirito glanced up at the rain pouring relentlessly. "If this rain doubles as the enemy's sensory ninjutsu, wouldn't using chakra to repel it give away our location?"
"Impossible..." Jiraiya muttered, looking skeptically at the seemingly endless rain blanketing the village. "If that were true, the chakra required to sustain it would be immense."
Still, just in case, Jiraiya donned a raincoat.
Walking along the water-covered ground, Kirito frowned. "Next time, pick a bigger toad. Two men crammed in its stomach—it's almost like kissing each other."
"You're the one who insisted on coming along. Alone, I wouldn't have felt cramped."
Upon reaching the bustling streets of the Hidden Rain Village, Jiraiya focused on a solitary elderly woman browsing a shop.
Elderly individuals tend to be less guarded than younger people. Confident in his ability to extract information, Jiraiya approached her while Kirito kept watch for any disturbances.
Despite the torrential rain, the villagers moved about as if it were a sunny day, their daily routines unaffected.
[The people here seem so accustomed to the rain. It's peaceful—hard to believe this is the base of the Akatsuki organization,] Kirito mused as he observed the passersby.
Along the way, Jiraiya shared information about the Hidden Rain Village.
The village's leader, Hanzo the Salamander, was known for his warlike tendencies, which had left the Hidden Rain Village in turmoil. Rumors suggested an opposition faction existed within the Land of Rain, further dividing the country.
Given this, and the knowledge that Akatsuki's leader, Pain, resided in the Hidden Rain Village, Jiraiya speculated that the opposition force was likely Akatsuki itself.
Jiraiya's plan was to gather information on the conflict between these two factions, focusing on the leaders: Pain and Hanzo.
"The one called 'Hanzo the Salamander'..." Jiraiya began.
Suddenly, every pedestrian in the street turned to look at him.
"Are you done yet? We're in a hurry—let's go!" Kirito interjected impatiently, urging Jiraiya to move.
"Ah, my apologies! The steamed buns here were just so delicious; I couldn't resist eating a few more. I'll make sure to feature this shop in a magazine!" Jiraiya stammered, realizing the tense atmosphere.
The two quickly left the shop and disappeared into the rain-soaked depths of the village.
