Chapter 155: Chapter 155: God and Angel
"I kept you waiting! Here are the meatballs you ordered!"
In a dessert shop on the streets of the Hidden Rain Village, a beautiful waitress placed several skewers of dessert balls on the table next to Jiraiya.
Grabbing a skewer and stuffing the meatballs into his mouth, Jiraiya grumbled, "Unbelievable! I actually fell for her excuse about not hearing clearly. She sure spoke clearly enough when praising the buns from her shop!"
Kirito, also picking up a skewer and eating, remarked, "This village is completely different from what you described earlier. Maybe your information is outdated."
"It looks like they've been unified, but the current leader doesn't seem to be Hanzo the Salamander," Jiraiya muttered, gazing up at the unrelenting rain. "What could have happened in the Hidden Rain Village over all these years?"
Suddenly, his attention was caught by a pink signboard on the street.
Recognizing the unmistakable style of a pleasure house, Jiraiya's eyes lit up. "I've got a better way to gather information. Wait here for the good news!"
Before Kirito could respond, Jiraiya had disappeared from the dessert shop, practically vanishing into the nearby nightclub.
Kirito momentarily entertained the thought of taking a stroll inside but quickly dismissed the idea. Since arriving in this world, he had maintained an ascetic lifestyle. Part of it was due to the physical demands of his journey, and part of it stemmed from lessons learned in his previous life.
Indulgence could lead to losing focus and delaying critical tasks—a hard-earned lesson from past experiences.
While waiting for Jiraiya, Kirito sat outside under the shop's awning, quietly observing the scenery of the Hidden Rain Village.
Because of the frequent downpours, the village was filled with intricate drainage systems and towering pipelines. The massive pipe towers, a unique hallmark of the Hidden Rain Village, created an almost surreal, otherworldly atmosphere.
[If everyone wore gas masks, this would look just like a cyberpunk city from a science fiction story.]
Looking at the rusty pipe towers, the pedestrians in translucent raincoats, and the neon-lit nightclubs flashing pink signs, Kirito felt transported into a futuristic, dystopian world.
As he ate meatballs and admired the scenery, the waitress who had served him passed by and paused to look at the unending rain. With a wistful expression, she muttered, "Strange... Why has it been raining for so long today? Could it be an arrangement by the 'God'?"
"Can this rain be controlled on a schedule?" Kirito asked casually.
"There's heavy rain every Sunday, with occasional showers on other days," the waitress replied after a moment of thought.
"That's impressive," Kirito said with genuine amazement. "To control rain like this—if it's true, that might as well be godlike power."
"Of course, Lord God is great! But Lord God rarely shows up. It's usually the 'Angel' who conveys His will."
The waitress pointed to an origami angel hanging under the awning. "That's from the Angel. They say hanging it brings good luck."
"Are they still being distributed? I'd like to have one," Kirito asked with curiosity.
"You don't seem like a local. During the usual gatherings, Lord Angel hands them out for free."
"I've been away studying crafts and just recently returned to open a shop. I'm not familiar with the changes here," Kirito said smoothly.
"Ah, I see..."
The gathering of the Angel wasn't exactly a secret, so the waitress readily explained how to reach the meeting location, where the Angel—Konan—would make an appearance.
"If you want an origami angel, you'll need to wait for the next announcement about the meeting," the waitress added cheerfully.
Kirito noted the directions and sincerely thanked her. "Thanks. Once my shop is up and running, I'll be sure to invite you!"
"Great! I'll look forward to it," she replied with a smile before leaving to serve another customer.
As the waitress left, Kirito shifted his attention to the rain, mentally mapping out the location she had described. He quickly decided to scout the area and search for Konan, the Angel.
The location was a tall pipe tower with an open square at its base. Next to the square was a high platform made of bent pipelines, an ideal spot for large gatherings.
Unfortunately, the square was empty when Kirito arrived—no Konan, no Pain, not even guards. It seemed the area was only used during actual meetings.
Turning his gaze away, Kirito searched for another familiar landmark: the grotesque, tongue-like tower where Pain was often depicted meditating in the original story.
Soon, he spotted the oddly-shaped structure near the village center. On its roof, Pain was performing ninjutsu.
With precise hand seals, Pain brought the torrential rain to an abrupt stop, clearing the skies over the Hidden Rain Village. Behind him, Konan dissolved into countless origami butterflies, which scattered beautifully into the air, spreading throughout the village.
Just as Kirito prepared to observe further, Pain suddenly turned his head in Kirito's direction, their eyes locking across the distance.
[As expected of the Rinnegan. His perception is sharp.]
Realizing that Pain was now on guard, Kirito averted his gaze, abandoning any immediate plans to locate Nagato's true body.
Like Kirito, Pain hadn't pinpointed his exact location but had sensed the subtle disturbance caused by the Rinnegan's powerful pupil abilities.
[This is just like when I avoided the Third Hokage's Telescope Jutsu as a child,] Kirito thought.
A short while later, Jiraiya emerged from the nightclub, beckoning Kirito to follow. Placing money on the table, Kirito got up and left the dessert shop.
"Master Jiraiya, did you learn anything?" Kirito asked.
"It's confirmed—Hanzo has been killed by Pain, who now calls himself a 'god.' The current leader of the Hidden Rain Village is Pain, the leader of the Akatsuki organization. What about you?"
"I found a location where we can meet the 'Angel.' She acts as Pain's spokesperson. If we can meet her, we might learn more about him," Kirito replied.
"A god and an angel, huh? Everyone keeps mentioning those two titles. It seems they're code names for their roles in the Hidden Rain Village."
Jiraiya pulled out a crumpled piece of paper. "If we're going to fight, the next step is figuring out Payne's abilities and strength."
