Chapter 4: Chapter 4
It was already the middle of the night when Shisui called Itachi to their usual cliff. The Uchiha Compound was asleep, but the Anbu watching them were not.
As always, Itachi avoided the hidden cameras, taking the blind-spot route he had memorized. He had only shared this path with Shisui, trusting him not to blabber about it.
Once outside the compound, he picked up speed, running under the dim moonlight until he reached the cliffside. There, as expected, was Shisui, staring down at the river below.
"Sorry to make you wait."
Before Shisui could respond—
"You're late?"
A voice from behind.
Both turned, their movements precise, kunai already in hand—
Nothing.
Then, another voice—this time from above.
"Up here."
They looked up.
There, floating in the air, was a figure bathed in moonlight. His long black overcoat rippled slightly, his silver embroidery catching the light. His white ash hair was cropped short, jagged strands falling over his forehead. Though slim for his age, he carried himself with a certain presence, giving him a look that said, I'm cool, but I don't try to be cool, which makes me cooler.
But the most unnerving detail—
His glowing blue eyes, framed by a flower-like pupil.
Itachi and Shisui immediately tensed.
This wasn't normal. This wasn't a wind jutsu. There was no chakra disturbance.
And his attire… it was nothing like any known shinobi village.
Who—or what—was this?
And those eyes… neither had seen anything like them before.
The stranger descended without a sound, landing lightly on the ground.
Shisui's voice was cautious. "Who are you?"
The stranger gave a small nod. "Toneri Ōtsutsuki."
Neither Itachi nor Shisui recognized the name.
But that wasn't what mattered.
This person had approached them undetected, moved in ways that defied logic, and showed no openings.
Still, his voice was calm. "I am no Shinobi. I hold no trouble. Please, be at ease."
But Shisui and Itachi weren't about to let his mystery play out.
Shisui moved first.
His Mangekyō Sharingan whirled to it's form, locking onto Toneri.
If this guy wasn't going to explain himself, then Shisui would just find out the truth himself.
A Genjutsu—deep, unbreakable—should have taken hold instantly.
But—
Nothing happened.
Toneri wasn't affected.
Shisui's breath hitched. No way…
That had never happened before. Never.
He had never encountered someone who could resist his Mangekyō without even trying.
Was he immune? Or… did he just not perceive it at all?
That was terrifying.
A flicker of movement—
Toneri vanished.
Both Itachi and Shisui reacted instantly, their kunai striking where he should have been.
But—
They passed straight through him.
No resistance. No impact.
Itachi's heart pounded.
He had seen this before.
The masked man.
The one who had killed his former teammate Tenma.
But this wasn't the same. The masked man had the Sharingan. This one had something else.
Before either of them could turn—
Toneri was behind them.
Standing at the cliff's edge.
Back turned to them.
As if nothing had happened.
Felt like wind rustled his coat, but he remained still, gazing at the distant village.
Shisui's hand tightened.
His Mangekyō had failed. His attacks had failed.
This wasn't an opponent he could read.
This might be the most dangerous person he had ever met.
Meanwhile, Itachi felt a cold weight settle in his chest.
The masked man had unnerved him before. But at least he had a presence.
This one…
It felt like they were staring at a ghost.
