Chapter 26: Train under Kosuke Maruboshi -3
Another Grueling Day of Training
Kotetsu's body was already screaming at him by the time he arrived at the training ground for another day of Kosuke's brutal regimen. His muscles were stiff, sore from the weight training, the sword drills, and the damn turtle shell strapped to his back. But that didn't mean he was getting a break.
Kosuke was already waiting, arms crossed, his expression unreadable. "You're late."
Kotetsu, panting from the sprint over, scowled. "I'm two minutes early."
"Exactly," Kosuke said, his water whip already forming.
Snap!
Kotetsu barely ducked in time as the whip sliced the air above his head. "Shit—old man, can you chill for one day?!"
Kosuke's response was another crack of the whip. "Did the battlefield ever 'chill' for you?"
"…Touché," Kotetsu muttered, unlike the children of this era Kotetsu had already been to war in his youth. Being one of the few to survive it, proving he had some talent and had high amounts of luck.
Kotetsu gets into stance.
First was the warm-up—20 laps around the field with the turtle shell strapped to him. The weight was increased making it even more unbearable, his legs on the verge of giving out by the seventh lap, but every time he slowed down, Kosuke's water whip reminded him to pick up the pace.
Once he finished, gasping for air, Kosuke moved straight to the next drill—reaction training. Kotetsu stood still as Kosuke unleashed his water whips, adding an extra one every ten minutes. His previous record was six whips. Today, Kosuke didn't even tell him how many he was using. It felt like an army of them were lashing out from every direction.
The only thing Kotetsu could do was trust his instincts. He dodged left, ducked right, flipped back—every motion had to be precise, every movement fluid. One slip, and he'd be soaked and bruised.
By the end of the drill, his body ached, but a small grin tugged at his lips. He had managed to avoid eight whips at once. A new record.
Kosuke gave him a rare nod of approval. "You're improving."
Kotetsu smirked. "Damn right, I am."
Kosuke's smirk was more dangerous. "Then let's see how well you handle yourself with a sword."
Fast Forward to the Weekend – Advanced Water Release Training
By now, Kotetsu had grown accustomed to the rhythm of Kosuke's training. The early mornings, the brutal physical drills, the relentless water whips. But today was different. Kosuke had something new planned.
"Today, we refine your Water Release," Kosuke said. "You've got the basics. But if you want to be great, you need to understand water on a deeper level."
Kotetsu wiped the sweat from his forehead. "I've been breathing in humidity all week—how much deeper do you want me to go?"
Kosuke smirked. "I want you to move water molecule by molecule."
Kotetsu blinked. "You what? Thats not possible."
Kosuke extended his hand. Instantly, the moisture in the air swirled, condensing into a floating sphere of water. It looked effortless. "The true masters of Water Release can manipulate water on a near-microscopic level. This isn't just about creating waves and dragons—it's about control."
In the anime only few could boast of having the talent, chakra reserves, and control to perform water release on this scale. Yagura, Second hokage, Kisame. And thats it.
Kotetsu stared at the floating sphere like it had personally insulted him. "You're telling me I have to manipulate individual molecules? That's insane!"
'And here this old bastard proved its possible for an average joe to learn. Still while Kosuke's water sphere isn't the size of a building he proved it was possible. If I could learn this and increase my chakra reserves could I reach those same heights?'
Kosuke shrugged. "That's why only a few can do it."
Kotetsu grumbled but got to work. He focused his chakra, reaching out with his senses. He could feel the water, but it was too vast, too chaotic. The molecules slipped through his fingers like sand. No matter how much he concentrated, he couldn't grasp them.
After two hours of failure, Kotetsu let out a frustrated groan. "This is impossible! How the hell did Tobirama do this?"
Kosuke chuckled. "The Second Hokage was a prodigy. He didn't waste time complaining—he adapted. If you can't do this yet, then we'll move on to something else."
Kotetsu didn't argue. If it meant he could stop frying his brain, he'd take whatever Kosuke threw at him.
Learning the Second Hokage's Jutsu
Kosuke pulled out a set of scrolls, unrolling them carefully. "These are some of the jutsu Tobirama Senju perfected. We'll start with something that suits your style—Shuriken Shadow Clone Technique."
Kotetsu's eyebrows raised. "Wait, that's his jutsu? I thought it was just a trick for show-offs."
Kosuke gave him a pointed look. "It's far more than that. You turn one weapon into hundreds. This is a battlefield technique, designed to overwhelm the enemy in an instant."
Kotetsu nodded, already interested. Kosuke demonstrated, throwing a single shuriken and weaving a seal. Instantly, the air filled with a storm of identical spinning shuriken, all sharp and deadly.
"Your turn."
Kotetsu picked up a shuriken, focused his chakra, and threw. He weaved the seal—and got… five clones.
Kosuke shook his head. "Pitiful."
Kotetsu grit his teeth and tried again. By the end of the night, he had managed to produce a hundred.
Kosuke smirked. "Better."
Next was Water Release: Water Bullet Technique. A staple jutsu, but powerful when used correctly. Kotetsu had already tried it before, but under Kosuke's guidance, he learned how to increase the velocity and control the trajectory mid-air.
Then came Water Release: Water Dragon Bullet Technique. This was an advanced technique, requiring precise chakra control. Luckily they were by a creek or river during their training so he could easily draw on the source to perform jutsu but it was still tough. Kotetsu struggled to maintain the massive water construct at first, but after repeated attempts—and a lot of Kosuke's 'motivational' water whips—he finally managed to summon a proper dragon.
Kosuke gave him a rare nod. "That was decent."
Kotetsu wiped sweat from his brow. "I'll take that as high praise."
Finally, they worked on Water Release: Water Formation Wall. Kosuke demonstrated, creating a solid wall of water in an instant. "This is about speed and defense. A well-placed Water Formation Wall can save your life."
Kotetsu mimicked him, raising a water barrier just as Kosuke sent a Water Bullet at him. His wall held—barely.
"Again," Kosuke ordered.
By the time midnight rolled around, Kotetsu could barely stand. His entire body was drenched, either from sweat or failed jutsu attempts. Kosuke, however, looked as calm as ever.
"You're improving," Kosuke finally admitted. "But don't get cocky. You still have a long way to go."
Kotetsu let out a tired laugh. "Yeah, yeah… just give me a damn minute to breathe."
Kosuke smirked. "Fine. You have until dawn."
Kotetsu's eye twitched. "…I hate you."
Kosuke chuckled as he walked off. "See you tomorrow, kid."
As Kotetsu collapsed onto the ground, staring up at the night sky, he let out a tired sigh. This training is gonna kill me.
But despite the exhaustion, he couldn't help but grin. Because for the first time, he could see real progress.
And that made every water whip worth it.
Another Grueling Weekend – Water Mastery and Speed Training
By now, Kotetsu had developed a love-hate relationship with his training. The turtle shell strapped to his back felt like an extension of his body, his sword drills had sharpened his reflexes, and the water whips had conditioned him into dodging like his life depended on it. (Because it kinda did.)
But Kosuke wasn't slowing down.
The weekend arrived, and with it, a new level of hell.
Day 1 – Speed and Reflex Training
Kosuke had Kotetsu wake up at 4 AM. Why? Because why the hell not, apparently.
"Shinobi don't get the luxury of sleeping in," Kosuke said as Kotetsu stumbled onto the training ground, still half-asleep. "Today, we focus on speed. A shinobi's reaction time is the difference between life and death."
Kosuke isn't technically wrong, shinobi are notorious for having sleep Insomnia, paranoia and other disorders. This is why him and Izumo work at the gates, as they actually get to sleep more after their shift. Half the day spent sleeping and half the day spent at work, its the best in the village other than working the stalls like a civilian or being in a big clan that takes cares of them.
"Yeah? Well, right now, I feel pretty close to death," Kotetsu muttered.
Kosuke's response was forming two water whips. Crack! One lashed at Kotetsu's feet, forcing him to jump.
"You're awake now."
"…I hate you."
Kosuke smirked. "You're welcome."
Drill 1: Water Whip Dodging—Now with Movement
Unlike before, where Kotetsu stood still while dodging, this time he had to run—full sprint, ten laps around the field, while dodging Kosuke's whips.
Each lap, the number of whips increased.
First two laps—only one whip. Easy.
Lap three—two whips. Annoying.
Lap five—three whips. Painful.
Lap eight—five whips at once.
Lap twelve --10 whips at once.
Lap twenty-- 30 whips of dragon heads.
By the final lap, Kosuke wasn't even waiting for Kotetsu to get back on his feet before striking again. He had to move fast, dodging while maintaining his speed.
By the time he collapsed at the finish line, gasping for breath, his body was sore, his clothes were soaked, and his brain was fried.
Kosuke looked down at him. "Not bad. But you could've gone faster."
Kotetsu groaned. "Maybe if I didn't have an old man trying to kill me."
Kosuke smirked. "A good incentive, wouldn't you say?"
Day 2 – Refining Water Jutsu
If Kotetsu thought yesterday was bad, today was worse.
Kosuke brought him to the river, arms crossed. "We've worked on power. Now we work on control."
Kotetsu blinked. "Is this another 'move the molecules' bullshit?"
Kosuke gave him a flat look. "No. You failed miserably at that, so we're moving on."
"…You don't have to say it like that."
Kosuke ignored him. "Today, you refine the Water Release techniques you've already learned. They need to be faster, stronger, more efficient."
Drill 1: Water Bullet Precision
Kotetsu stood at the river's edge, forming hand seals. He inhaled and released a Water Bullet, firing it at a target.
BOOM!
The force was strong, but it lacked accuracy. The bullet splashed too wide, wasting chakra.
Kosuke clicked his tongue. "Sloppy."
"I'd like to see you do better," Kotetsu muttered.
Kosuke raised a hand. FWIP! A single, precise Water Bullet shot out from his palm, piercing the exact center of the target.
"…Oh."
"Again."
Kotetsu repeated the jutsu. Kosuke made him fire hundreds of Water Bullets, each one aimed at a specific mark. If he missed—even by an inch—Kosuke would hit him with a water whip.
By the end of the session, Kotetsu's accuracy had improved tenfold.
Drill 2: Water Formation Wall—Instant Activation
"The Water Formation Wall is useless if it's slow," Kosuke explained. "By the time you've formed it, you'll already be dead."
Kotetsu groaned. "Great pep talk."
Kosuke ignored him. "I'll attack. You block. If your wall isn't fast enough—"
He cracked his water whip.
Kotetsu sighed. "Of course."
The drill began. Kosuke attacked without warning. Water bullets, whips, and even sword strikes—all forcing Kotetsu to react in an instant.
At first, he was too slow. The wall formed after he was already hit.
Kosuke frowned. "Dead."
Kotetsu gritted his teeth and tried again.
'I sware Kosuke is too good of a guy to own slaves but damn he'd be effective at his job, with these damn whips, heck they'd probably give him a raise and a pat on the back.' Kotetsu thought in between defending.
Kosuke caught him off guard and the attack had him unconscious from Kosuke's water whip blasting him through two trees. Leaving a comedic lump on Kotetsu's head.
After an hour, his wall formed just in time. Kosuke's Water Bullet slammed into it, dispersing harmlessly.
Kosuke nodded. "Faster."
By the end of the day, Kotetsu could raise his Water Formation Wall instantly.
And he had only been whipped twenty times. Improvement.
Final Test – Water Dragon Bullet Technique
Kosuke stood at the riverbank, arms crossed. "This will be your final test for today. Summon a Water Dragon."
Kotetsu groaned. "You do know this jutsu is insane, right?"
Kosuke smirked. "You want to get stronger or not?"
Kotetsu sighed. Fine.
He formed the twenty hand seals. Water from the river surged, swirling into the shape of a massive dragon.
It wasn't perfect—its form wavered, its movements stiff. But it was a Water Dragon.
Kosuke studied it for a moment before nodding. "Passable."
Kotetsu nearly collapsed in relief. "Finally."
But.
Kosuke's smirk turned evil. "But it's only useable if you want to die. 20 plus hand seals, are you trying to die. Reduce it down to two while dodging my whips."
"…I hate you."
By the time Kosuke dismissed him, Kotetsu was completely drained. His legs felt like lead, his chakra reserves were nearly empty, and his entire body ached.
But despite the exhaustion, he couldn't deny it.
He was stronger.
Faster.
Sharper.
And it was only the beginning.
As he trudged home, he muttered under his breath, "If I don't die from this training, I swear I'm making Kosuke buy me ramen for life."
