Chapter 3: Chapter 3 : Luffy, The Girl Knows How To Sail
Koby was in shock—not because of Luffy's strength, but because of the sheer confidence he had in his dream, a dream that seemed impossible to achieve.
"Hey! You guys!"
Luffy turned to the remaining pirates, who immediately scrambled to their feet in terror.
"This ship is mine now! Find yourselves a boat and leave—unless you want me to get serious!"
The pirates didn't need to be told twice. They quickly untied a small boat from the ship, frantically jumping onto it. But there were too many of them, and the tiny boat nearly capsized under their weight.
By the time Carl arrived with their boat, the pirates were already rowing away as fast as they could.
Carl hopped onto Alvida's pirate ship and immediately spotted Luffy chatting with a pink-haired boy. It didn't take much to figure out that this was Koby.
But Carl wasn't interested in their conversation—his focus was on the ship itself.
To be honest, it was in terrible condition. But at least it was big enough and much more stable than the tiny boat they had been using.
Well, at least Luffy isn't completely clueless.
Since he had taken down the enemy captain, it was only natural for a pirate to claim the spoils.
This ship was now theirs.
"Mr. Carl, done with your nap?"
Luffy approached with his usual big grin. "Look, Mr. Carl! This is my first prize since setting out to sea! Hahaha! We're using this ship for now—the boat was too small to carry enough food! We haven't even finished eating that giant beast from yesterday!"
Carl was speechless.
So he took over the ship just for more food? He had actually thought Luffy had a proper plan in mind.
"Well, you're the captain. Do whatever you want." Carl shrugged. He had no intention of getting involved in decisions like this—too much of a headache.
Just then, the captain of the merchant ship called out, thanking them for their help. Luffy simply waved it off with a carefree smile.
He had never been the type to harm civilians, and that was what set him apart from other pirates.
After parting ways with the merchant ship, Carl, Luffy, and Koby set sail on Alvida's pirate ship.
Luffy had specifically kept Koby on board.
Why?
Because Luffy didn't know how to sail, and since Carl had already made it clear he wouldn't handle it either, Luffy figured the best option was to pick someone from Alvida's crew.
Even if Koby only knew a little bit about sailing, that was enough.
Koby, grateful to be rescued, eagerly shared his story. He had accidentally ended up on Alvida's ship while fishing and was forced to become a crew member. He had been too scared to even think about escaping.
Luffy burst out laughing when he heard this.
"Haha! I hate cowards!" he said bluntly.
Koby looked like he was about to cry.
After a moment of hesitation, he finally gathered the courage to ask, "Luffy-san… are you serious about becoming King of the Pirates?"
"Of course I'm serious!" Luffy nodded without hesitation.
"But… do you even know what the One Piece is?" Koby asked nervously. "Twenty-two years ago, Gol D. Roger ruled the seas. He had wealth, fame, power—everything this world has to offer.
The world called him the Pirate King.
Luffy-san, if you really want to become the Pirate King, you'll have to enter the Grand Line and find the legendary One Piece!"
"Yeah! I can do it!" Luffy grinned confidently.
"But… do you even have a crew?"
"Teacher Carl is my crewmate for now, but I'll find more soon!"
"But there are so many powerful pirates out there who also want to be the Pirate King! If you try to compete with them, you'll die!"
"Don't worry! I'm strong!"
"No, no, no! That's impossible! No matter how you look at it, there's no way—"
Boom!
Luffy punched Koby.
Koby clutched his head, looking pitiful. "W-Why did you hit me?!"
"Subconscious reaction!" Luffy shrugged.
Then, pressing down on his straw hat, he said with unwavering determination,
"It's not about whether I can or not. I will become the Pirate King—I've already made up my mind.
Even if I die trying, I won't hesitate!"
Koby was stunned.
For the first time, he saw something incredible in Luffy's eyes—a light, shining with pure, unshakable will.
Carl, listening from the side, shook his head.
Seriously? Even though Luffy is so much stronger now, this conversation with Koby is still playing out like in the original story?
Is Koby actually that important?
Well, yeah.
He did end up at Marineford during the Summit War, and his desperate shout was what gave Shanks the perfect moment to step in and end the war.
Looks like fate really treats this pink-haired kid well.
Carl decided he had heard enough and walked into the cabin.
As he casually swept the area with Observation Haki, he suddenly sighed in frustration.
Oh, come on.
Heading straight to the captain's quarters, he pushed open the door—
And there, rummaging through the room, was a girl in a messy outfit.
Orange hair. Big eyes.
Who else could it be but Nami?
No matter what I do… I really can't escape the plot, huh?
Nami spun around in surprise.
Then, with the most innocent smile she could muster, she quickly waved at Carl.
"Hehe! Boss! I just, uh… noticed the captain's quarters were a little messy!
So, I figured I'd, um… help clean up!"
She chuckled nervously. "I definitely wasn't trying to steal any treasure!"
Carl waved his hand dismissively. "You know how to sail?"
"Ah? Oh! Yes, yes! I definitely know how to sail!" Nami nodded rapidly. "Boss, I can help navigate! Just don't kill me!"
"Alright. If I don't kill you, you get to keep all the treasure on this ship as payment. But in exchange, you have to work hard."
"Yes! I'll work super hard!"
Nami was overjoyed.
She thought she was done for when she got caught, but instead, she got hired—and on top of that, she even got all the treasure!
Not bad at all.
Carl quickly led Nami up to the deck—
BOOM!
The sound of cannon fire suddenly echoed in the distance.
Carl turned his head. A Marine ship was approaching, firing at them.
Meanwhile, Luffy was already gearing up for a fight.
"Gomu Gomu no—Balloon!"
Luffy inhaled deeply, his body instantly inflating into a giant balloon.
BOING!
The cannonballs bounced right back—exploding on the Marine ship!
The small warship, completely overwhelmed, immediately retreated.
Koby stood there, completely stunned.
"L-Luffy-san… who are you?!"
"Hee hee!" Luffy grinned. "I'm a rubber man! I ate the Gomu Gomu no Mi!"
"The Rubber-Rubber Fruit?!"
Koby was shocked.
And it wasn't just him—Nami's expression changed, too.
In East Blue, the so-called "weakest sea," Devil Fruits were nothing more than legends.
Yet now, she was seeing one in action.
Carl stepped forward with Nami.
"Captain Luffy, this girl knows how to sail," he said. "I'm thinking of using Alvida's treasure to hire her. What do you think?"
"You know how to navigate?! That's amazing!"
Luffy's face lit up with excitement.
"Alright, then! Just like Teacher Carl said—you're our navigator now! I'm Luffy! Nice to meet you!"
Nami's smile was a little… stiff.
"Hehe… my name is Nami."
Carl added, "And I'm Carl, Luffy's teacher. That's Koby, an unlucky guy."
Koby opened his mouth, wanting to introduce himself—
But after hearing Carl's words, he felt like crying.
Still… when he thought about it, he really was unlucky.
So he couldn't even argue.
With that settled, Nami took full control of navigation, using her skills to steer the ship toward their next destination—
Shells Town.
