Pokemon: Cheat System

Chapter 8: Chapter 8

The next day, Kai woke up early.

As a trainer who focused on both "wild battles" and "official battles," Kai had strict requirements for himself. Physical training was the most basic form of discipline, so even on holidays, he never skipped his morning routine.

Exercising was an activity that brought him joy.

"Huff~"

After slapping his face to wake himself up and finishing his morning routine, Kai quickly had breakfast.

He changed into light clothes and, before heading out, prepared enough energy blocks and energy drinks for Caterpie, placing them in its bowl.

Once Caterpie woke up, it would obediently eat and start its training for 'Dragon Ascent' and other skills. As its trainer, Kai didn't need to worry too much.

Caterpie, with its natural talent and self-discipline that seemed to mirror Kai's own, was a rare gem—a child that was hard to find even with a lantern.

So, Kai was actually quite satisfied that his starter Pokémon was a Caterpie.

The relationship between a trainer and their Pokémon was actually quite simple.

Often, if they clicked, they would become lifelong partners.

Pokémon were a trainer's… no, Pokémon were humanity's best companions.

They were pure and kind creatures. Though they possessed intelligence comparable to humans, their hearts were simple and clean. Once they chose someone, even if that person didn't treat them well, these innocent little beings were willing to give their emotions and loyalty.

If a trainer truly cared for their Pokémon, then in response to that affection, their Pokémon would return it a hundredfold, a thousandfold, even ten thousandfold.

"Coo!"

Standing on the side of the street, a flock of Spearow and Taillow flew over Kai's head, flapping their wings toward the sun and gradually disappearing behind the white clouds, leaving his sight.

Lining the streets, the trees with lush leaves were home to some bird Pokémon that hadn't joined the migration—such as the relatively gentle Pidgey and Pidove, which chose to build their nests in these tall, evergreen trees.

Occasionally, a few cunning Rattata scurried through the greenery, probably planning where to feast today.

In the alleys, a few Meowth kept a watchful eye on them.

Occasionally, Oddish, with their green leaves on their heads, would pop up from the fertile soil, smiling happily at passersby near the flower beds.

Kai returned the smile, gently and skillfully pinching the center of Oddish's leaf. The little Pokémon made a comfortable sound, a soft murmur in its mouth.

"Mee~"

Leaving Oddish's leaf alone, Kai jogged to the park entrance.

This was his favorite place for morning exercise, and it was also a playground for children and the elderly.

"Splash—!!"

Under the small bridge, the elegant Goldeen and Seaking danced gracefully in the water, swimming along the slightly narrow artificial river toward the lake.

Occasionally, the dopey Psyduck would mistake the fish for its family, waddling adorably after them. However, due to its slow swimming speed, it could never catch up, and eventually, its sibling Golduck would find it by scent and take it home.

Unfortunately, if the park had kept a Swanna from the Unova region, the scene would have been even more dramatic…

Kai stepped onto the bridge, passing by the crowd.

Living in this world where humans and Pokémon coexisted harmoniously, both the young and the elderly carried their Pokémon with them.

Humans and Pokémon together painted a dreamlike picture.

"Huff~"

An hour later, after finishing his usual morning exercise, Kai, now sweating, sat on a park bench, resting while watching the people and Pokémon passing by.

The park was gradually getting busier.

It was graduation season, so not only Kai but also the new generation of trainers had mostly received their partners.

Excited young people often liked to take their Pokémon out for a run, and the park, with its public training grounds, was obviously a good place to go.

Before encountering the system, Kai also liked to bring Caterpie to the park to exchange tips and experiences on raising Pokémon.

"Ah…"

Leaning back on the bench, looking up at the clear sky, Kai stretched.

His stress had suddenly lessened.

Perhaps this was the gift this world of humans and Pokémon had given him, a Pokémon enthusiast.

"Hey, how's your preparation for the 'Rookie Tournament' going?"

"Ah, I'm not aiming for any rankings. Just doing my best is enough. Having fun is the most important thing."

"Then watch me and my partner win. We've been training hard for this 'Rookie Tournament'!"

Nearby, a few people with their Pokémon were discussing a rookie competition.

The 'Rookie Tournament' was an annual event for new trainers, where only recent graduates could participate with their registered starter Pokémon.

The difficulty wasn't high, but such events involving rookie trainers often had media coverage, making it a good stage for those who liked to show off.

It was an annual event with some influence.

Kai had actually signed up for this 'Rookie Tournament' initially.

Since the 'Rookie Tournament' started a month later, Kai was confident that he could train Caterpie to evolve into Butterfree within that time.

By then, Butterfree, having learned a series of useful skills, would easily dominate a rookie competition under Kai's command.

What could rookie trainers who had only had their Pokémon for a month do?

Butterfree might even be considered a powerhouse in the 'Rookie Tournament.'

Kai was practically guaranteed to win.

Then, the system appeared and disrupted his plans…

Even if he could still participate later, Kai probably wouldn't be able to use the "Compound Eyes Butterfree Sleep Powder" tactic to torment these rookie trainers, which was a shame.

"Let's go."

Standing up, Kai headed toward the park entrance, starting his journey home.

On the way, he stopped by a store specializing in Pokémon products and bought some Bug, Flying, and Dragon-type food. The price of the latter made Kai's vision darken.

Being a trainer was indeed an expensive profession.

However, the comforting thing was that Kai could make energy blocks himself using berries, saving a lot of costs—Kai was a student of the breeding department and had already obtained a junior breeder certificate in high school. Knowledge and skills in Pokémon nutrition weren't a problem for him.

Moreover, aside from enhancing Caterpie and giving him troublesome tasks, the system had also helped Kai himself.

[Foreign Language Lv.3: You can fluently master and use multiple languages. Daily communication is no problem, and you can pass exams with your eyes closed.]

[Energy Block Making Lv.3: You can skillfully use nutritious berries to make high-quality energy blocks. Your deep understanding of energy blocks and berries helps you avoid waste and mistakes. The quality of the energy blocks is enough to support your Pokémon's energy needs.]

These two skills were rewards Kai received after completing the tasks "Become a 10,000-follower streamer" and "Receive a Starter Pokémon."

Since they were completed long ago, they were rewards directly given when the system awakened.

The former allowed Kai to travel to various regions without worrying about language barriers.

The latter gave Kai the confidence to train Caterpie with low cost and high resources.

Kai's resentment toward the system lessened a bit because of these skills… At least the system's essence was indeed helping him grow stronger, not just giving him tasks to annoy him.

"Hey, have you heard about the disaster in the Hoenn region?"

"Ah, I heard. It's all because of that team, messing around with expansion for no reason… Who knows what they're thinking? Now they've brought this disaster upon themselves."

"I heard a big green dragon descended from the sky and drove away the two giant monsters, like a god. If it's always there, there shouldn't be any problems later."

As Kai approached his home, the voices of some elderly neighbors discussing recent news reached his ears.

As people from the Dayan region, the somewhat superstitious elderly had an unusual view of Rayquaza, a dragon-type Pokémon, almost as if they had a special reverence for it.

Instantly, Kai's smile became a bit awkward.

These elderly people might not know what really happened that day when Rayquaza drove away Groudon and Kyogre… but as someone who was there, Kai knew all too well.

A god?

It was just him and Caterpie, caught in the crossfire.

At that moment, the elderly noticed Kai and warmly greeted him.

"Uh… hi, hi."

Forcing a smile, Kai responded to their greetings and quickly ran back home.

Watching Kai's retreating figure, the elderly perfectly demonstrated their MI6-level skills, discussing something even he didn't know about.

"Hey, I remember a girl came by a couple of days ago asking about this kid. Did that happen?"

"Yes, that girl looked a few years older than Kai, quite pretty. Could she be his girlfriend?"

"The kid's growing up… But that girl you mentioned, I feel like I've seen her on TV a few times."
