Chapter 34: Catch me if you can
The man wearing the Marowak mask collected all the signed contracts and announced, "Now, you are officially players in this tournament."
His voice carried a sense of finality, making it clear that there was no turning back.
He continued, "The first game will begin tomorrow. This game will be played in teams."
"On the big screen above," the man said, pointing to a screen that Kay hadn't noticed earlier, "you will see groups of six numbers. Each group represents a team. Those numbers correspond to the player codes printed on your shirts. You'll need to find your teammates to prepare a strategy for the next game. The numbers would be shown after an hour."
Kay raised his head and finally noticed that the screen was on for the first time. He saw something written in bold numbers: 36/36.
It didn't take him long to figure out what it meant, there were still 36 players left in the tournament.
The players waited for an hour as the screen remained unchanged. Finally, after the hour passed the screen flickered, and rows of numbers appeared. Each row had six numbers, indicating the teams.
Kay's heart began to race as he scanned the screen, searching for his player number, 10F.
He carefully looked at each group of numbers, and after some time, he found his team: 5, 10, 16, 24, 29, 33.
Kay quickly checked the numbers printed on the shirts of the other players in the room, trying to identify his teammates.
But before he could find anyone, the man with the Marowak mask stepped forward again.
"Now that you've seen your groups, you need to gather with your teammates. Find them and take one of the corners of this room to plan your strategy for the first game."
He paused and glanced around the room before continuing, "There are six teams of six members each. Make sure your group takes a separate corner so there is no interference. I will explain the details of the game once everyone is in position."
The players began to move, scanning the numbers on each other's shirts to find their teammates.
Kay began searching for his teammates, carefully checking the numbers printed on the other players' shirts.
After a short while, he spotted a young man about his age with the number 24. Kay walked over to him, and as he approached, he noticed two more players standing nearby. He quickly checked their numbers and saw that they were 33 and 16.
With four members gathered, their team was nearly complete. They now only needed to find the remaining two players to form the full group of six.
As time passed, other teams began forming and moving to different corners of the room.
Kay and his teammates continued searching until, finally, they found the last two players they needed. Now, their team was complete.
Once all the teams were in place, the man with the Marowak mask stepped forward to address the players again. His voice echoed through the room.
"The first game is called 'Catch Me If You Can.' "
The players listened intently as the man continued.
"In this game, two teams will face each other on an island. Your goal is to catch a specific Pokemon on the island. The first team to catch the Pokemon will be declared the winner, while the other team will face elimination."
"Anything is allowed," the man added. "The Pokemon you must catch is a Superior Bronze Stage Aerodactyl."
Kay's eyes widened. Aerodactyl was incredibly fast and also powerful. This would not be an easy task.
"Make sure to plan your tactics carefully," the man concluded, his tone cold and firm.
As the players were busy discussing strategies, the man with the Marowak mask interrupted to give more details.
"For sure, there will be a countdown. We can't wait for a week for you to catch the Pokemon."
The players fell silent, listening closely.
"The countdown will be set to 24 hours. If neither team manages to catch the Pokemon within that time, both teams will be eliminated."
Gasps spread through the room at this announcement.
The man continued, "Now if your team catches the Pokemon before the deadline, you will have two choices. You can end the game immediately, securing your team's victory and eliminating the other team. But there is another option, your team can request for another Pokemon to appear. If you choose this path, you will need to catch the new Pokemon as well. You will earn a special prize if your team succeeds in catching it. This prize will grant you an advantage in the next games."
The players started whispering among themselves, and Kay could feel the tension rising in the room. The man's words hung in the air as he added one last crucial detail.
"However, this choice is not without risk. If the other team manages to catch the second Pokemon, they will not be eliminated. Instead, they will remain in the competition. So, think carefully before deciding, it's a calculated gamble. The prize could help you immensely, but you might also give your opponents a second chance to survive."
Kay returned to his team, eager to hear their thoughts and ask if anyone had come up with a plan for the game.
As the group stood together, a man with the number 5 printed on his shirt stepped forward.
He was a tall, stocky man with short, scruffy hair and a confident demeanor. His sharp eyes scanned the group as he spoke, his deep voice carrying authority.
"Does anyone here have a Flying or Water-type Pokemon?" he asked, and without waiting for a reply, he continued explaining his reasoning.
"Aerodactyl is a Rock-type Pokemon. That means it has a weakness against water types, so having one would give us a huge advantage in battle. But before we can think about fighting it, we need to find it first, and there's no better Pokemon for that job than a Flying-type."
The team exchanged glances, each member waiting for others to confirm that they had a Pokemon with one of these types.
Finally, the young man Kay had spoken to earlier; the one with the number 24 on his shirt raised his hand and spoke. "I have a Pidgey,".
The team immediately turned their attention to him. Kay nodded in approval, glad that they at least had a Flying-type Pokemon on their side.
After checking with everyone else, it became clear that no one in the team had a Water-type Pokemon.
While this was a disadvantage, the group agreed that the Flying-type was the most crucial for locating the Aerodactyl.
As the team continued to discuss their plan, the man with the number 33 on his shirt interrupted.
"We shouldn't forget that the masked man said everything is authorized, the other team might not even focus on the Aerodactyl at first. They could try attacking us instead."
Kay listened carefully, impressed by the man's cautious attitude. It was clear that he was thinking beyond the obvious and preparing for any possibility.
The man with the number 5 nodded in agreement but quickly redirected the conversation.
"You're right, we need to stay alert. But before we start worrying about the other team, we should know what we're working with. Let's share what Pokemon we have so we can build a proper strategy."
The man with the number 5 began with himself, "I have an Onix." Hearing this, Kay couldn't help but think how valuable this man would be as a teammate, but also how difficult he would be to face as an opponent in the future.
Next, the man with the number 33 spoke up. "I have a Machop,".
The woman with the number 29 followed, her voice calm yet determined. "I have a Ponyta," she said, earning a few nods from the group.
Then, the man with the number 16 added, "I've got a Sandshrew."
Finally, it was Kay's turn. He hesitated for a moment before speaking. "I have an Eevee," he said, deciding not to reveal his Growlithe.
Kay had made this decision carefully. While they were teammates now, he knew that this could change later in the tournament.
If he ever had to face them as opponents, he wanted to keep his winning card hidden.
