Chapter 39: Deal with the enemies
The short time the other team needed to prepare before following Kay gave him a slight advantage.
It allowed him to gain some distance, but he knew he couldn't run forever, especially alone.
The only thing working in his favor was that he knew the road very well since he had traveled it that same morning.
As he ran, he took quick glances behind to check how far his pursuers were. He noticed that the distance between them was getting smaller.
Kay quickly concluded that it was because he had been neglecting his physical training and focusing only on his Pokemon's training.
Now, that mistake was costing him. If he continued like this, they would catch up before he reached the Aerodactyl cave.
Kay needed a solution, and he needed it now. Suddenly an idea came to his mind, but he wasn't sure if it would work.
However, he had no other choice but to try. Using a stick, he quickly wrote a message in the dirt on the road:
"You can't catch me in time. I can show you where the Aerodactyl is in exchange for you not following me. Say your answer in a loud voice."
After finishing the message, Kay hid deep in the forest to the right of the road. He chose this plan because he knew the enemy team had left Zubat behind to guard the camp, meaning they might not have any other Pokemon that could detect him.
Then he released Eevee and gave it some instructions.
"Go to the left side of the forest and use Swift in the sky When you see one of their Pokemons attacking the sky, then run away if they come searching for you, else search for a blind spot for them and return to me."
Eevee nodded and ran to its position. A few moments later, the enemy team arrived.
When they saw the message on the road, they stopped to read it using a flashlight. This gave Kay the perfect chance to observe their Pokemons.
As said before, they had a Metapod and a Vulpix. But now, he could also see a Spearow, a Mankey, and a Geodude. Kay couldn't check their stats because they were out of his Pokedex's range.
The good news was that none of them had a Psychic-type Pokemon or another Pokemon that could easily detect him inside the deep forest. The bad news as expected was that he couldn't fight all of them alone.
After reading the message, the group fell silent, clearly thinking about their next move. Then, one man, who seemed to be their leader, spoke in a loud voice.
"If you really believed we couldn't catch you, you wouldn't have stopped here to make this offer. That means you must be hiding somewhere nearby, listening to us."
Kay thought that this man was sharp, but he already expected that they would reach this conclusion.
The leader continued, "But you're right, we don't have time to chase you. We could track you down and force you to talk, but time is against us. So, we accept your deal."
Kay was impressed. This man had analyzed the situation perfectly. But Kay wasn't going to take any risks.
He quickly wrote another message on a small piece of paper, wrapped it around a stone, and prepared for his next move.
To distract them, he threw another stone high into the air above the enemy team.
Vulpix, sensing movement, immediately reacted and shot an Ember at the stone, making it explode in the night sky.
Because of the darkness, they couldn't tell exactly where the stone had been thrown from.
At that moment, Eevee recognized the fire in the sky as Kay's signal. It followed the plan and used Swift, launching glowing star-shaped projectiles into the sky from the left side of the forest. The bright stars sparkled in the air, grabbing the team's attention.
While they were distracted by the shining stars, Kay seized the opportunity. He quickly threw the message-wrapped stone on the ground near their feet, then slipped further into the darkness.
The enemy team finally noticed the small piece of paper on the ground. Their leader bent down, picked it up, and carefully unfolded it. As he read the message inside, another player spoke up.
"We saw where the Swift attack came from! That means we can find him easily now."
Before anyone could act, the leader raised his hand to stop them. "No, the trainer we're following isn't an idiot. If he wanted to hide, he wouldn't have exposed his location like that."
The others fell silent, "That Swift attack was just a distraction. While we were looking at the stars, he threw this message without us noticing where it came from." he said while showing them the message-wrapped stone.
Then, he read the message aloud for the rest of the group to hear:
"If you are still accepting the offer, say it, and a Pokemon will come to you and lead you to the Aerodactyl's place. If you attack the Pokemon, know that our deal is canceled, and you will have to search for me, and for sure I will take my revenge."
After hearing the message, the team exchanged glances, unsure of what to do. The leader let them think for a moment before speaking again.
"We should accept the offer, we don't have enough time left to win the game if we waste it chasing him."
He then added, "Our goal is to catch the Aerodactyl, not the other players."
One of the team members hesitated and then spoke up. "But what if this is a trap? What if he's leading us into an ambush?"
The leader shook his head. "If it was a trap, we could still win. We had already caught two of his teammates, and his Pokemon would be standing right in front of us, so we could attack it and knock it out instantly. That means we have five people against just three. Even if it's an ambush, we would still have the advantage."
The same man nodded but then asked another question. "If he knows where the Aerodactyl is, why didn't his team catch it first?"
The leader thought for a moment before answering. "Maybe they were attacked by wild Pokemons before they could act. Or maybe he was trying to find his missing teammates to tell them about it. That's where we found him."
After hearing this explanation, the doubtful player lowered his head slightly, indicating that he had been convinced by the leader's reasoning.
The leader then turned his attention back to the forest and shouted, "We accept your offer! We're ready to exchange the Aerodactyl's location for not following you."
Hiding in the forest, Kay listened carefully. The moment he heard their response, he nodded. The plan had worked. He turned to Eevee and whispered his final instructions.
"Go and show them the way to the Aerodactyl's cave, but don't go out from this side of the forest where I'm hiding. Exit from another direction so they don't know where I am."
Eevee gave a small nod before quietly making its way through the forest, careful not to expose Kay's position. Kay watched as his Pokemon disappeared into the darkness of the deep forest.
When the leader shouted their answer, the forest remained silent. The team stood still, waiting for something to happen, but nothing did.
The players exchanged confused glances, wondering if the deal had been a trick.
Just when they began to doubt, a small figure emerged from the shadows. Eevee stepped onto the dirt road ahead of them, its brown fur blending slightly with the night.
The little Pokemon stood completely still, its ears twitching slightly as it observed the enemy team.
For a few moments, no one moved. The team watched Eevee cautiously, unsure if this was really their guide or if something else was about to happen.
The leader was the first to react. He gave a small nod to his teammates, silently telling them to follow.
The moment they took their first steps forward, Eevee turned around and started walking.
Its fluffy tail swayed with each step as it calmly led them deeper into the wilderness.
It didn't run, nor did it hesitate, it simply guided them like it knew exactly where it was going.
The group followed closely, moving carefully through the forest path. The dim moonlight barely illuminated their surroundings, but they kept using their flashlights to keep following Eevee, making sure not to lose sight of it.
Meanwhile, hidden deep within the trees, Kay moved stealthily. He followed them from a safe distance, stepping lightly to avoid making noise. His heart pounded, but he forced himself to stay calm.
